Return saga

Called apple they won't do express ship since I don't have AppleCare. Went to store replacement was just as bad worse than my first, Genius updated support case. I am going to wait a month see what happens....irritated I cant do express ship.

I just got mine and so far I can't see any backlight bleeding or yellow spots anywhere. I had those same issues with my iMac so my eye is pretty well trained to notice by now LOL. I can't understand why Apple can't make products that don't have the stupid yellow tint. It's like everything they've released lately has had it which is rather annoying if you ask me.

Same happened to me before I took mine back for a refund. As I said earlier in this thread. I had to send it away to Apple as they were telling me I needed to buy AppleCare for express shipping and when it got there I got an email saying that they could not duplicate the issue so original product was shipped back to me. Even the genius in the store could see it that I took it too earlier in the week (Couldn't swap it out then because they had no stock and it was going to be up to 12 days for a replacement to be sent to the shop) and I spoke to a supervisor by phone at Apple and emailed him pictures of the issue and he agreed it should never have been sent back to me.

so... what do you think of it?? I think some posted here are way better than mine :/

I've been using this iPad for 2 days now and I've heard that apparently "the glue hasn't dried yet and will go away after a while". Is this true or should I return it asap?

that has got to be one of the worst I have seen to date. Return that.

Serial/Batch Numbers

As it seems that we are now starting to see SOME good screens among the bad, wouldn't it be good for those who have already 'taken the plunge' (with either result) to post the serial/batch numbers for everybody's good going forward, including 'the rest of us'? :) We can then start to aggregate them for reference.

This is a great idea

Great comparison. A PSP easily twice as thick, maybe more, and the screen is much smaller. It's better? Duh?

Come on...there are plenty of 10in LCD Netbook screens with no issues.

Apple is cutting corners for numbers and QC is suffering in a big way.

My last 3 major Apple purchases have all been defective. Ihone 4, new 21in Imac and now the iPad2(all in 8 mo).

I love Apple stock and I am a shareholder but as a consumer, I am very disappointed. Mark my words if QC continues down, Apple will fall hard.

No, if you compare just the display section the PSP GO (I'm talking about the slider model) it is as thin, or thinner, than the iPad. I doubt the thickness of the polarizer, panel, and backlight are significantly larger. And the diagonal size of the screen doesn't inherently make it better; the quality of the panel components and assembly do. Plenty of iPod Touch models had small and mediocre screens.

can we get any more confirms that replacements are beginning to show no leakage?

I just received my iPad this past Friday from china and it has leakage. Not sure if I am going to return it as it doesn't bother me since I don't watch movies on this thing. You can only see it on one corner when the screen is pitch black.

So, has anyone's bleeding improved? Or is it still the same?

Hey i am new here this thread prompted me to sign up.

This problem is still there and it is very severe. I bought an ipad 2 on launch in UK (25 March) and this had a few deal pixels. I returned this unit to my nearest apple store and the new unit had very bad bleeding. I then called them up yesterday to tell them about the problem and they said come in and they will swap it. SO I drove the hour to the apple store and they quite clearly saw the bleeding and exchanged it for me. I set the ipad up in the store but obviously couldn't see the problem under the store lights. I took the ipad into the carpark which had very dim lights and could see this ipad had the same problem! So off i went to the apple store again and they exchanged it once more. This time the new ipad had a very bad mark on the white bezel!! I told the staff member about this and he said they have no more ipads left in stock.

The staff member admitted that he has actually got the same problem (bleeding) with his ipad and also quite a few other member of staff do. It was very clear from talking to him and seeing a handful of these units (not to mention other peoples i have seem with bad bleeding) that this is affecting most units at the moment. The staff member advised me that i take my old unit back with me and in a month or two make an appointment with the genius bar and they will absolutely swap a unit for any type of screen issue like this. So i left with the same unit will put up with it for a couple of months and exchange when apple has sorted out this big **** up!

It will catch up to them. It did with HP

Absolutely not. I remember these same complaints about QC when the first iPhone was released. It's hardly catching up with them. If anything their success is wildly increasing. You have to remember that this is an enthusiasts forum and criticism is disproportionately higher than among the rest of the typical Apple users in the world. The vast majority of people wouldn't have the faintest idea what backlight bleeding is or how to check for it.

On my iPad 2 there has been some minor improvement. The common light leak right of the home button on my unit is now minimal. I don't expect it to disappear though.

Obviously QC is important. But don't forget, the more you make, the more defective units will slip by. This doesn't neccessarily mean a disproportionate number of defective units. Last time I checked, there weren't too many tablet makers, or netbook makers, who have sold in the millions of units of one model. If they did, you would be reading about defects.

Also remember that people don't generlly post about the defects of non-Apple netbooks on a Mac forum. Not sure where your "plenty of" data comes from.

While the backlight bleed might seem like a big deal here, it's one of the few defects I've seen or read about here that hasn't made it to mainstream media (yet). And believe me, they're ready to pounce on Apple for the slightest bit of news, good or bad.

Apple has probably sold at least a million iPad 2s by now. If 5000 people complain online about backlight bleed (and here on MR that number is less than 500), that equates to .5% defective units. I haven't seen 5000 complaints on Apple's discussion boards either. Even if you added up all the online complaints, with all the offline complaints, what are we talking about? 10,000? 20,000? 50,000? 50,000 is still only 5%.

Does Engadget count as mainstream media? i think so.

I dont get why people defend Apple this way. The QC is crap. Have you looked around the various ipad forums. this is issue is all over. I have no idea why mainstream media is not screaming about this issue.

I was on plenty Asus forums. The LCD were fine, there were issues with the charger. In fact, Asus guaranteed a perfect LCD.

This is not a small issue at all. Many wont care and will accept it. However, I will not with my hard earned money. I am not asking for perfection but when view a movie I prefer not to see half dozen light spots on one and corner that look somwehat yellow on black screen.

I am using my iPad2 at 35% brightness.

There will always be those juvenile Apple apologists who will tell you "don't look at that part of the screen" or "turn the brightness down" or "don't use it at night". That's fine for those poor, stupid bastards who choose to keep a defective product. However, don't for a minute let them convince you not to return your defective iPad. Bend the frame a little or apply pressure on the bezel near the light splotches - they will shift and change. This is clearly a design/manufacturing issue that can be corrected. The questions is, will it?
