A few weeks back, I posted my fourth iPad, which was brand new at the time and the worst I had up to that point. I was then told by Apple Care to wait until they knew the bleed was fixed. I received a call from my rep last Friday saying he had located one. He was on the phone with a local Apple store and they were verifying over the phone with me that they had an iPad in a dark room at that moment and that it has no bleed. I was finally able to go and pick it up yesterday, and I am happy to say they are right. It is nearly perfect. There is one very small spot on the long left side, but it is barely noticable. Even at 100% brightness this thing looks great. I have attached a few pics of my old one that was horrible and the new one, in case there are any doubters out there. FINALLY! I hope you all are able to get the same results here.

The issue will never be resolved because of goobers accepting the issue like you. Your iPad is garbage and you deserve the flaw since it's ok with you. Cheers!

Well want to update on mine since I've finally decided to go through the motions of getting a replacement anyway possible to eliminate this (to much money for light bleed this bad). Talked first with Stefan Beager and then Becca Schad.

First as I suspected when I tried to register my iPad 2 under "my support center" before calling it gave me the error message "this serial is associated with another apple ID". Backs up my suspicions of it being previously opened and used, resealed and somebody forgot to put all the plastic protectors back on the iPad and the cables.

Stefan and Becca seeing my frustration with not only that situation and the bad back-light bleeding (which I e-mailed them 50% and 100% pictures that they attached to my case and repair ID) went ahead and gave me a leather smart cover for free ($69 value) to help offset my frustrations.

Stefan went to explain that I would get a service unit as he was aware any new unit replacement would ship directly from China (as my smart cover currently did) which would give you a 50/50 shot of a no bleed replacement. Instead I would get a service unit which in terms is a refurbished unit that is taken in house, completely disassembled (by an american not foxconn slave), parts replaced as necessary, complete reassembled, tested, and inspected for quality control (including back-light bleed). He wasn't sure the exact steps they took on inspecting for back-light bleeding but he ensured me it would be enough to give me a clear unit.

Following what I'm hearing on the forums here it seems 90+% of people getting the brown box (service units) are getting very minimal or completely perfect screens.

Once we got all that settled I was informed that I would have to send my iPad back first and wait on a replacement without having the Apple Care plan (he tried doing anything he could to avoid it). Originally he said on the iPad 1's they could charge a $29 fee (which they could waive) to give you a express repair meaning you get the service unit overnight shipped, and you get a label to return your damaged unit overnight back to Apple.

Since he couldn't work around he they went ahead and offered me Apple Care for $50 ($29 off) which I took so I could get a quick turn around without waiting extremely long time sending my unit off only to wait and then get one coming back slowly.

As it is now my smart cover is in LANTAU ISLAND HK coming from SHENZHEN CN. iPad 2 service unit is coming from Apple in California. I'll update as I get my replacement in, I would strongly advise you take a service unit that has had hands on in the states by someone and goes through QC here in the states. A new unit sounds exciting but coming straight from Foxconn in Shenzhen China I wouldn't expect any magic until they admit a production issue and a resolution to it.

Posted this in the other thread, but since this is the main one, reposting.

Went to the store to pick up my replacement iPad 2 (brown box) unit. Had the Genius inspect it for light bleed and he said there was none. Got home and checked it out and it was very slight at 100%, definitely within tolerance. However, I have one dead pixel in the upper left corner. Also, this may sound weird, but the left side of my screen is slightly dimmer than the rest of the screen on lighter and white backgrounds. The aluminum and everything else is flawless.

Coworker received his iPad 2 via online Apple order. He and another coworker have been teasing me saying that had I ordered mine back on day 1 I'd have it today (I'm essentially getting one free). Luckily I hadn't as I've been following this thread since the issue was first reported.

He's going to be bringing the iPad to work tomorrow, so I'm going to test it by going to this website, bringing it into a dark room at 100% brightness and adjusting it down to normal to see if he has the issue. Will report tomorrow (if we indeed do the test).

Got the chance to test out the coworker's iPad. Yes his has the light bleed, I didn't have the means to take pics unfortunately. He didn't want to see the problem and he didn't want to read this thread :D, but I told him his did bleed even with the brightness at around 25%. He said he'll live with it and I told him that it was totally up to him if he wanted to live with a "defective" screen. He looked at me and with a sarcastic reply "You need to wait for the iPad 3". ;) However, another coworker (also an Apple:apple:fanboy) looked at the screen with me and confirmed that those "spotlights" were not right.

BTW, in Safari, is there a way to make the browser go full screen so that the addressbar/menus disappear? I had to keep flipping the iPad around to see all the edges. I didn't try zooming... would that have pushed the menus offscreen?

go here:

download the black square from the ipad and open it in photos.

it's also a good way to check for dead pixels.

they replaced my backlit bleeding black 16gb wifi only in about a week. the new one came from PA and was not in original packaging but it is perfect so far. ordered on march 16 arrived first on April 12.

thanks everyone

Just got a Verizon 3G iPad today. Perfect screen, no bleed.........except a dead pixel at the bottom. DAMN!

As posted in the brown box thread:

Brown box replacement picked up yesterday... Aberdeen UK.... Black 64Gb Wifi.
No Bleed :) plus given £25 to spend instore as i would have to replace the rear skin...
Genius advised although a brown box, its a new unit as refurbs arent in the system yet (in the UK at least)They only received this batch on tuesday evening.

that's just like mine!
congrats :)

Got my replacement from Apple today.. ZERO bleeding.. My first iPad 2 had very very very bad bleeding :)mad:) and a dead pixel.. But my new is totally good!

I'm so happy, and this totally made my weekend :D Will post some pics ASAP (it's still day, but I'll see if I can darken my room, haha).

*EDIT*

Both pics are at 100% brightness. On my first iPad 2, I could even see the bleed in daylight at 60% (on the homescreen - not even a black picture). Now, it's just great!

To recap my iPad 1 64GB 3G experience:
iPad #1: No dead pixels, minimal blb along edge, but two growing spots of bleeding in noticeable areas of the screen. These appeared about 10 months after purchase.
iPad #2: cluster of ~8 dead pixels
iPad #3: backlight flicker (and more than usual blb along edge, but flicker is the biggest problem here)
iPad #4 is a keeper. No dead/stuck pixels, no dust under the screen, no backlight flickering. There is some backlight bleeding along one of the edges, a yellowish spot just like those of the pics in this thread (although somewhat smaller than the iPad 2 pics you guys have been posting). Considering the other problems I've had I can live with this level of bleeding. I keep it at the lowest brightness level anyway so I shouldn't notice it. If it gets any worse I still have another year of AppleCare.

Wow that is CLEAN!! What was the process of getting one of these? Was your first iPad ordered from the online store or from the apple store? DId you specifically ask for a brown box one?

u are so lucky!!!

questions: which ipad 2 model, did you buy it online, was it brown box or retail box, when did you ask for the replacement?

thanks! that one is really good.

Answer to the questions:

I bought my first in Denmark, Europe at March 25.. Sent it in for repair (we can't get a replacement in-store here in Denmark) at April 7 with the message "one dead pixel and backlight bleeding".

It came in today, where I got it instantly.

It came in retail box - but the retail box that I sent in with the first iPad (and all cables, charger etc.) - so they just ordered a new iPad - it was still in the original case that I sent in on April 7. So I guess it's similar to what you'd get in the brown boxes (reburbished?) in the US.

So I'm just plain happy, and this totally made my weekend :D Had feared that the backlight bleed would be similar or worse than my first, but this is just better than I had expected! :D

does the serial number of ur original ipad match the replacement ipad?

if we know that then we can safely assume that they repaired your ipad and returned it to you.

the reason i am asking is so we can know if the bleed is gone only after repair, or if they sent you a new one from manufacturing which has the bleed issues resolved.

thanks!!! AND CONGRATS AGAIN! that's one perfect ipad

Yep, it has got a new serial number (got new insurance papers for it too, to match the new SN ) :)

And thanks! I'm just so happy right now :D

I just noticed the bleeding after I read this thread. It isn't that bad. Not sure if I should exchange it or just ignore the bleeding.

Here are the pics of my iPad. 100%, 50%, and while playing a video at 50%.

BTW, I bought the iPad three days ago.

if you're happy with it, just keep it.

but if it bothers u... just return it and get a new one, but there's no guarantee that the new one will be any better. could be worse...

i returned mine and placed a order for a new one.

did you buy it 3 days ago from an apple retail store?

Yes, tho not in the USA.

I guess I'll keep it, the hassle of having to be exchanging iPads until I get a perfect one is not something I would like to do.
