I'm taking a trip to Seattle in April, should I bring the iPad box with me to try to exchange it at the Apple store? Or is just the iPad enough? I bought mine at Wal-Mart.

I know that when I had get my iPhones replaced, they just took the phone itself. But I'd take the box, just to be safe. New product launch and all.

This may be a mfg problem, but you gotta admit Apple's support is amazing. When I was angry after my first ipad2 I emailed tim cook and steve jobs with my complaints and the picture from the CNET article, and within hours I was called by someone from Apple and they arranged an exchange at the local apple store. Now I had already called the store prior to hearing from this guy, and they said they were out of stock. I guess they lied because after the guy from Apple called the store manager they had an exchange for me waiting to come pick it up...I can't say I've ever heard of another company being this great at support. The problem is that the second unit has the same problem as the first -- and I can only assume that there are thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousands of affected units. The thing we all want to know is -- what is it exactly? What is causing these "artifacts" to appear on the screen? MFG defect that's permanent? Or is it the glue \ evaporation thing that will eventually go away? I'm going to update the guy from Apple executive and let him know that the 2nd one is bad as well...I am sure they will look into it and release some kind of statement. It's not like them to deny stuff or "admit nothing" -- like the dude said, remember antenna gate? They had a whole press conference for it, and that wasn't really a show stopping issue imho.

Getting back on topic tho -- I think the only thing we can do is wait. Unfortunately the apple store here doesn't have rest rooms so I could not tell if it was bad or not when I opened it in the store. They really need to look into this and release a statement -- because a lot of people are either really mad or panicing right now.

My first gen ipad had and still has absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Wait, does your first gen iPad still have the yellowing/bleeding?

apple is notorious for hiding problems. They've denied problems and later admitted they were problems (like yellowing palm rests, cracks in macbooks, etc)

but I to am hoping it's just something that will go away like the glue issue on the iphone 4. I hope more people make a big deal of it like you did with apple to make sure they realize this is wide spread.

Does anyone know up to how many days Apple will exchange a defective unit after purchase, 30?

should be up to a year. manufacturers warranties cover defects.

edit: I thought it came with a one year warranty out of the gate and that anything extra in apple care was only 90 days unless you bought an extended warranty

"Yellowing" and bleeding are two different issues. It's confusing because the light that bleeds through is yellowish.

Yellowing goes away. Bleeding is for life.

I don't really know what to call my case. If you saw my earlier post, I put a link to my video showing my issue. Since I don't really know what it is, I thought they might be about the same thing, but I see now that they are not.

I posted a little while ago that mine didn't have problems, I was wrong. It is bleeding through, but it's minimal and I could ONLY see it in an almost pitch black room with the brightness at 100%. I'll never be using the brightness at 100%, so for me it's not an issue.

That looks a lot like mine, which I will live with.

My other half's, on the other hand, is as bad as the worst in this thread. His will have to go for repair/exchange.

So should I wait about a week to see if Apple says anything, or should I return it ASAP?
Looks like luck of the draw to me. If was bothered by it, I'd make a Genius appointment and take it back. I can't imagine this condition getting better with time.

I see some very legit complaints but I don't see anything wrong with your display. I might be missing something or your being real picky!

While I see your point, and agree I am very thankful its not as bad as some of the ones others have posted, it's just that for $700 I would like something a little better. Love it in every other way, it's just distracting when watching movies etc. I am kinda picky though :) I appreciate the reality check. Hopefully everyone can get this figured out! Best of luck.

Just Googled "backlight bleeding" and found lots of LCD TV discussion on this, including some posts where after 2-3 exchanges, owners (mind you, these are $2k-$3k purchases, not just $700) finally resorted to the massage technique and for some of them, not all, seemed to permanently resolve the issue. Might be worth a try. Just keep searching Google for the massage/tap technique.

Sort of glad I didn't get one yesterday, maybe by time my 3.5 week order is manufactured :) they will have resolve any line issues.

Good luck!

3/4 sides

I have light leaking on 3/4 sides of the screen, bottom being the worst. Brought it into Apple 5th Ave and they're swapping out iPads when they receive a new shipment.

Yeah, 2 spots that aren't bright and can only be seen with brightness at 100%? I feel like I got lucky. And I'm usually VERY picky with my electronics. It's just not that big of an issue, and I'm still amazed with this thing. It's incredible.

Exactly how mine is at 100% I have two little spots on one side of the screen but they aren't bad and at 50% where I normally use it they are not noticeable.

At 50% it's great. Can't see it whatsoever. But if mine did look like some of the pictures I'm seeing, I'd be upset too. We got lucky :D

Guys and gals, don't settle for less than perfect, we all paid good money for these devices! :)

I just took my 1st gen into a closet, set the brightness to 100%, and brought up a black pic. I have absolutely no bleeding whatsoever on my 16GB Wifi iPad1.

Of course, an AMOLED wouldn't have this problem.

Ugh this is frustrating reading this thread as I wait for mine to ship from apple. My MacBook pro 2011 has a decent amount of backlight bleed on the bottom but I was told that is normal.....
