is there a way to know when was the ipad manufactured???
as far as i know, the recently ipads have overcome this problem. However, my ipad, which i bought last week in Japan, was said to be manufactured and shipped to Japan months ago but they did not sell it till last week due to the earthquake and tsunami. Now, they are having new ipads shipping from factory, hope that they wont have the bleeding screen.

If your fourth letter of your ipad 2's serial number is an 'F' it means it was manufactured in the first quarter (Q1) of 2011, and will most likely have light leak issues. If the 'F' changes to a different number that means it has recently been manufactured and hopefully the light bleed issues are fixed with the new batch.

Nope, you sure shouldn't. But do you test your fridge by reducing the input voltage by 20% and turning on your heater in the middle of summer to raise the room temp to a 120 degrees and then complain when the fridge brings down the temp to 41 instead of 40? No you don't. (At least I hope you don't). You just use it. Yep the food is cold, thermometer says 40. Same with the iPad, just use it. If you see light bleed, take it back. If not, enjoy it. But to test it in situations that it wasn't meant to be used and then complaining about it ?

Completely fake analogy.
If that were indeed the case, 1deg is marginal on a fridge. You would not notice it. The light bleed that is generally being complained about is analogous to the light not coming on when you open the fridge door and when you use the icemaker, it only emits slush sometimes and water the rest, also a tray is bent and the salad cooler is broken. The 'fridge' in this instance is keeping things cool, but it is not working as it should.

I didn't mean to make it sound like it bothered me in the least bit. I was ecstatic seeing it for the first time. It's the stuck pixel that appears after a few min of use that got me frustrated.

Actually, its a perfect analogy. If it works under normal circumstances, most people wouldn't have a problem with it. Thermometer says 40 or so. Its the same thing with the iPad. Sit down and watch a movie, oh, crap, I see light bleed, you have an issue. Sit down watch a movie, you don't see light bleed, so you turn up brightness to 100% (excessive brightness) and stare at a black screen and notice some light bleed, is that still an issue with the iPad?

My light leak is at about 30% the brigtness of other light leaks I've seen, to the point where I can't quite get a good picture to illustrate, but it only exists in one corner of the device and in pitch black with 100% brightness instead of the screen being 100% black, that corner is about... 75-80% black and it's barely noticeable.
Overall I'm happy because in a normally dark environment (plane, bedroom, in a car at night) I can't see it unless I try to find it. Doesn't interfere with my viewing at all.

iPad 2 light leak
Took my iPad 2 to the Apple store due to having a dead pixel. They swapped it out with a brown boxed iPad just fine. I took it home checked for light bleed and there was none. 100% satisfied with my new iPad!

You are selectively reading. I suggest you read through again as you have missed essential points:
1. This is not an issue regarding 100% brightness. The units I have seen are either autobrightness setting or I set them manually to 20%.
2. The errors I see are not specific to black backgrounds, obviously that enhances the problem through contrast but the issue remains throughout the spectrum.
3. You will see in this thread that I have posted that I work in the industry and have seen this issue on many occasions with a *lot* of units. I mean a lot.
This is indeed an issue with this model. It requires resolution.
Like others, I had an iPad2 with backlight bleed, got it swapped at my local apple store for a brown box unit that has little to no backlight bleed, but has a dead pixel.

Just got back from Apple. Showed them the pixel issue and I got an ooh wow. So I asked if I am getting a brown box special and I'm told yes. She comes out with a new box which she unsealed in the back (no conspiracy here) and she tells me they are giving me a factory fresh unit. I'm ok with that I guess. The reason she opened the box was to check for light leak. She tells me it looked good and because I'm so freak'n tired of this fiasco I just believed her. I bet you know where this story is going. Anyway as I'm walking in the garage I check it out. You guessed it, light leak heaven. A feature to some. A crappy display to others.
So the moral of the story kids is that getting an iPad without light leak is treasure to behold. A treasure only few have seen and have enjoyed.
So please do not tell me that this is a small percentage. The small percentage are those of us who have the eyes and eye to see the difference between a good display and a poor one.

What difference does that make if I still burn 14 gallons of gas to make three return trips to the Apple store, or have a big diesel burning UPS truck make three special trips to my house all because a multi-billion dollar company doesn't do a proper QC job at their factory.
I would love to know how many tons of CO2 is pumped into our atmosphere each year because of something stupid like backlight bleeding - knowing it doesn't have to be that way. Apple has the money and the resources to do better, and they should be held accountable.

I feel for you. Too bad the first had some dead pixels. As I read from someone else before, for the money we pay for the iPad, the QC allows a certain 'extra' to get through with a passing grade.
Someone said something about 'new batches' with the 'G' production. QC has nothing to do with a 'new batch'. It has to do with what Apple deems as acceptable on the assembly line from a financial perspective, and what it doesn't. The more iPads that fail QC, the more it costs Apple as those panels have to be discarded and it cuts down on distribution, lessens forecasts, and ultimately makes shareholders upset as stock price declines. Sucks, but that's business.
Maybe if Apple placed a 15-20 percent premium on the iPad, QC would increase, they'd allow less of the substandard iPads through, and the percentage of 'perfect' iPads would go up.
I am about to return my iPad 2 that I got from the Apple Store this weekend. I want to wait till I can get it from an online shop that would be tax free, late May they say.
The LCD screen has bleeding that is worse than my 46" Sony LCD TV. This is unacceptable. The smaller the screen the less prone they are to bleed. It has to do with the glue process. The iPad 1 was less prone to bleed. Based on Anandtech.com's iPad 2 article, the iPad 1 used brackets instead of glue. Damn glue! 😡

iam really looking forward to buy a ipad as it has been lauched in my country(india)....iam concerned about these issues.....
but since it has been launched after almost 2 months,i guess they will ship new recently manufactured ipads(guess)
