Ugh!

At first the backlight bleeding on my device didn't bother me too much, but it's really getting on my nerve now after 2 weeks. Selling party refuses to do anything about it though, can't blame them, took me too long to abide to their rules.

Bit of a shame on this $1150 device (800 euro).

Yeah but it's still a game if chance. Look at the other photos of light bleed and decide whether the chance of getting something worse is worth the risk. Unless your unit is a mess you might want to think about it first.

I bought my white 64GB wifi iPad 2 in the US on 24th March and immediately spotted bleeding. I decided to keep it because of the supply shortages and the big price differential between the US and the UK. I've waited just over a month and have contacted Apple UK support this morning about the issue. I was asked to backup the iPad and restore it then check to see if the bleeding was still there. It was so they've setup a Genius Bar appointment for me this afternoon to repair or replace the device. Based on an idea in this thread, I've put the iPad in a transparent document sleeve and traced around the areas of bleed so I have something to show to the Genius when I arrive. I'll report back later with the results of the appointment.

cmvsm, I'd gladly pay extra or a premium. Something like Pioneers signature series that had a more hands on approach at the factory. Then again Pio no longer makes TVs. :)

Anyway I'll sit on this unit for a bit and see what happens. All I was hoping for was at 50% it would be hidden. I'll post a pic in a bit.

So here is the replacemnt.

Complete garbage.

Yes 100% but even at 0% some of it is showing and in bright ambient light I can see some of this mess.

Look at that compared to the brown box unit I just had and tell me they can't make this happen for most iPads.

Mine is the same as that.

ahve you checked the serial number to make sure it aint a refurb?
serial number (if it is new) should be higher than your old one then? no?

Just got back from Apple. Showed them the pixel issue and I got an ooh wow. So I asked if I am getting a brown box special and I'm told yes. She comes out with a new box which she unsealed in the back (no conspiracy here) and she tells me they are giving me a factory fresh unit. I'm ok with that I guess. The reason she opened the box was to check for light leak. She tells me it looked good and because I'm so freak'n tired of this fiasco I just believed her. I bet you know where this story is going. Anyway as I'm walking in the garage I check it out. You guessed it, light leak heaven. A feature to some. A crappy display to others.

So the moral of the story kids is that getting an iPad without light leak is treasure to behold. A treasure only few have seen and have enjoyed.

So please do not tell me that this is a small percentage. The small percentage are those of us who have the eyes and eye to see the difference between a good display and a poor one.

5 iPads

4 with light leak

2 with dead or stuck pixels

Picked up at four different locations over the past month or so. Yeah, it's a small problem.

When you've done with the light leak and dead pixels, start checking for separation of the glass and aluminium. ;)

My stats:

2 iPads - both with substantial light leak and glass separation
over 40 iPads inspected at various London outlets - light leak and glass separation on all of them.

iPad 2 = dud.

Not a troll, either. Anger is because I've spent 12 months developing software for a machine I'd now be mad to deploy in the field because of these problems.

None of the iPads I've had showed any case or glass issues. Guess I was lucky. LOL!

Just received my replacement from the online Apple store (UK). Best iPad 2 I've seen so far. No light leak and no dead pixels.

As I type I'm worried I have jinxed something else just by speaking about it.

that's pretty bad...

Yes it is. Not sure what I should do at this point. I'm at the point of maybe selling it and then buying and returning until I find a magical iPad that has only minor flaws.:)

If I could I would return mine and get ipad1. My wife's that I got at ATT for $529(64gb3g) was perfect brand new unit. I am jealous.

I just got my replacement about five minutes ago. I still have the old one, they are only collecting it on monday. Tiny bit of bleed, as would be expected for an LED screen - very even in the four corners at 100% black so a non issue now.

HOWEVER, my new ipad has a noticeable yellow tint to the screen. Could this be the bonding agent still drying? I'm a little worried about this....

was the replacement unit from brown box or new retail box?

I've been contacted by the press about my iPad bleeding light issues, dont want to say too much but had very long conversation with a researcher and will send pictures to them :)

I finally got my iPad 2 back and this one hardly has any backlight bleeding. I was pleasantly surprised. Might get around to posting a pic soon.
