Sunday when I got my brown box pixel special I was told that this would be it for replacements. When I called Apple support the woman I spoke to was really surprised and apologized up down. She said a hardware problem is not the customer's fault and told me he was wrong. I think local stores get a little too excited playing company man/woman for their own good.

I have just had the same response from the Apple support line. I was advised that there is no condition on exchanging a unit and if the replacement had the same fault they would swap it again provided it was under warranty. I asked them to put a note confirming this under the case number just to be safe. When I collect my replacement I will confirm this with the store manager just to be on the safe side.

My iPad definitely has bleed, but I bought it from a third party. Should I be going through them or can I contact Apple directly for a replacement?

Also, doesn't anyone wonder what happens to their returned iPads? I hope they're not all dumped in a skip somewhere..

Just received my replacement from the online Apple store (UK). Best iPad 2 I've seen so far. No light leak and no dead pixels.

As I type I'm worried I have jinxed something else just by speaking about it.

how did you go about getting yours replaced?

I bought my iPad 2 from Target in the US. I contacted Apple UK support by telephone to report the problem then went to my local Apple Store for a Genius Bar appointment to setup the exchange. If I were you I'd contact Apple directly.

As soon as I received my first one and saw the bleed I called customer care at the online store and they immediately ordered a replacement. They allowed me to keep the first one until the replacement arrived three weeks later. The first one is being picked up on Friday.

The whole thing has been frustrating but, as usual, Apple customer service has been exemplary.

i'm in a similar situation.

I bought the iPad 2 in NYC and live in Germany. There are no official Apple stores in my area, so would I have to send it somewhere before I get a replacement?

also:

did anyone connect the backlight bleeding issue to the use of the smart cover? i used the ipad for 4 days without any issue and noticed that when i bought the smart cover and used it, the backlight bleeding issue came to light.

Just a coincidence.

I have a call back from Apple support at 9:00. I'm willing to send this one in to have checked and replaced but I'm not even sure that'll work. It reminds me of trying to find a winning scratch ticket.

I'm really despising this whole situation.

i'll def. post up my results when i get my new ipad this week.

I just received mine from Chengdu, China and there're a lot of bleeding even at 50% auto brightness. Going to return this unit.

Oh wow. Now I am worried.

Anyone else receive theirs from Chengdu? Have bleeding?

I suspect that the service units (brown box) may go though more stringent quality control since it would be embarrassing for Apple to replace a bad unit with another bad unit. The one I got yesterday is pretty much perfect. No light bleed and no dead pixels.

The only unit our of 5 that had little to no bleed was a brown box unit. Perfect in every way except several pixels that were funkified. I'd be very happy with that unit if the pixel issue wasn't present.

Just got off the phone with Apple. Of course they were nothing but nice and helpful. I'm going the route of sending it back to Apple and having them send me a replacement. I don't feel like going into another store and getting that feeling like I'm bothering people. That's probably more me than it really happening.

They also confirmed that this issue is well known and that "most" have it but was assured that the one I get will be less if nothing else. I can't complain about their service that's for sure. In 3-5 days I should know what I got. :)

Will do. I have my iPad checking closet ready and my finger on the light switch. Wait, don't all of you have iPad checking closets? :p

Really don't know what to do with mine. Light bleed prob is gone on my second one but it now has this yellow hue over it. Replacing it may get me one with light bleed again. :(

Are you talking about just a warm looking screen or yellow defined areas?

Overall warm screen to the point where a White colour is tan.

I had returned an iPad for a dead pixel. The screen was brilliant white. The replacement was a brand new retail. I opened at the store to check for dead pixels and saw none. What i did noticed was the screen somehow didn't look that brilliant. Was too happy at that time to really care.

Got home and saw the digusting pee colored screen. Also darker along the left and right border of the screen. Makes reading on white background unpleasant.

Went back to the store and compared it to a genius iPad. What a world of difference. His is bright white and mine dullish yellow. Got a new replacement and now got a brilliant bluish screen. Happiness ended quickly as bottom left of screen has the same dullish yellowing on white white the rest of the screen is bright and white. Argh. But this screen is clearly different from the entire yellowish screen. The new one has a 2x2 dull yellow on white on bottom left. Will exchange or get a refund later.

Oh backlight bleeding bad on all models. I learned to live with that. They all have it.

Not going to argue with you as I don't really care about the backlight bleeding as much as the dullish screen. Between my iPad 2s and a few of my friends iPad 2s, we all have it so I just assume that it is a lost cause. Hope u get a perfect screen.
