LOL! I got Justin R. on the same exact question.

Apple should just put the backlit keyboard on all models, THEY ARE LOOSING CUSTOMERS WHO WANT IT BUT DONT HAVE THE $$$, especially after they got it wrong on their website.

Same thing here.

Hi, my name is Justin R.. Welcome to Apple!

You: hello

Justin R.: How are you doing?

You: good

Justin R.: Great!

Justin R.: How can I assist you today?

You: quick question: there is alot of confusion on the internet today due to the presentation that mr.jobs gave saying that the high end macbook will have a backlit keyboard, does the 1299 along with the 1499 macbook have a backlit keyboard?

You: the website currently says 1499 macbook only in one place, and in the BTO and cart it shows the 1299 laptop has a backlit keyboard also

Justin R.: The $1499 2.4GHz model is the only MacBook with the backlit keyboard.

Justin R.: I apologize for the confusion.

You: ok, but i currently have a 1299 macbook in my cart and it says it has a backlit keyboard. why is that?

You: MacBook, 13-inch, Aluminum Part Number: MB466LL/A SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) 2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x1GB 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide Accessory kit 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 1 $1,299.00 $1,299.00 Ships: 1 - 3 business days

Justin R.: Yes, this information is not correct and we are working to have it fixed.

You: what is your recourse for all the people who have already purchased it under the impression they are receiving a backlit keyboard? my significant other has already purchased one and will be very very upset to hear this

Justin R.: Just another minute...

Justin R.: I totally understand your concern. You can call our Customer Service Department and set up a return if you would like.

Justin R.: The number for Customer Service and Sales Support is 800-676-2775.

You: is that really the direction that CS decided to go on this?

Justin R.: This would be your best option, is to contact Customer Service to see what they will be able offer.

This is really crappy in my opinion.

Sounds fair to me. You have the option to get your money back. They should have to give anyone anything free for a clerical mistake.

pasted from the apple store

Even the keyboard is advanced.

The MacBook keyboard is solid, responsive, and comfortable. Just put your fingers on the crisp keys and you’ll feel pure typing bliss. An illuminated keyboard, a popular feature of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, now comes standard on the 2.4GHz MacBook model. So when you’re in low-light settings such as airports or lecture halls, you can always see what you’re typing. It’s a luminous feature for anyone on the go.

I got bumped to the 2.4 for free

Bumped for free? Right.

I suspect that this is a mistake on the website. But that doesn't really matter to us as apple would have to honour what they said even if it is a mistake.

Apple does not have to honour anything. They can cancel the order, send an email about the reason for cancellation

I would trust more what Steve Jobs said in the keynote than what is on the website, so that would mean that the 2.1 model wouldn't have it, although that is my opinion.
Agree, some people here are very hard headed . They dont want to have the reality.

I went to Apple' s UK store. If u order the cheaper one it only says keyboard , high end version says backlit keyboard.

They're always losing money for customers who don't have the money.

They just lost a MBP customer because I can't afford one, and I really want a 15" laptop. Price the new MBP at the same price as the high end MacBook, and I'll buy it.

Oh wait a sec, I live in the real world.......

Precisely. Thanks for the laugh and the use of common sense.

The preponderance of evidence.

Watch the Special Event video:
http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/0810rtdws876/event/index.html

.. skip to 43:10 where Steve Jobs says "and second model, $1599, adds a faster processor, a larger harder drive, and a first for a MacBook, a backlight keyboard".

Evidence supporting that the illuminated keyboard is only for the 2.4GHz MacBook
1 - Steve Jobs is recorded saying it at the keynote
2 - The keynote slide verifies what he said.
3 - The features page states the same: http://www.apple.com/macbook/features.html
4 - The tech specs page states the same: http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html
5 - The 'which MacBook are you' page states the same: http://www.apple.com/mac/whichmacbook/compare.html
6 - Apple's official press release states the same: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/10/14macbook.html

Evidence supporting that the 2.0GHz comes with an illuminated keyboard:
1 - the US Apple online store, which has been wrong so many times following a product launch that I can't even begin to imagine why senior MacRumors users would even contemplate basing a point using "oh, well, this entire situation is just so confusing, we just don't know what the real truth is".

On the 1st MB you had to decide for the white or black MB, now you have to decide if you want a backlit keyboard.

So we not getting backlit keyboards :( that kind of sucks..... And we not getting anything else in return for the mistakes eather ?

BTW it still says

Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide

in the description .....

So I just called CS and CS is assuring me 100% that the 1299 does have a backlit keyboard, and that I can return it for the 2.4 if it does not.

The techs have no idea what they are talking about. I talked to two today, one said the did, other said they didn't after I waited about ten minutes.

Apple does not have to honour anything. They can cancel the order, send an email about the reason for cancellation

However, if they ship it to you and the packing slip/order say backlit keyboard, and you have an item that doesn't have it... its not as simple as apple just hitting "cancel."

yea ive been under impression the low end did not have one while the upper end one did. guess will have to wait to check it out at stores to make sure

There's a UFO in Alabama?

Is it backlit??? :confused::confused:

There was a silly BS prediction that made it's way to the mainstream media about ufos revealing themselves sometime today (over Alabama no less) but it never happened because.

:D
