I think Apple wants the Mac to be at least adequate for gaming. They wouldn’t have released a Wine-based porting app if they were content with the current situation. Since the Mac uses Apple Silicon now if it isn’t adequate at gaming it makes iOS look bad by comparison.
You'd think that they would have started working with game studios before Catalina arrived and tossed away any 32-bit games.

IMO 8 GB is not a joke; Mac OS makes it work for undemanding usages. But I certainly agree it would be helpful if RAM upgrading cost less.

Apple's baked-on-chip UMA RAM is hella more complex than basic RAM would be, so we really do not know what it costs Apple to add RAM.

8GB RAM is a joke. Smartphones have even more RAM.

I’m not sure if that contradicts or confirms ”Their whole 8GB nonsense is pure greed and nonsense. 8GB is beyond pathetic in 2023. But it does add a does of reality to either argument.
Ha ha 🤣

Does it play as good as the Windows version? How does it work on laptops? I can run some early 2000 games on my MBP 2015 but it turns my macbook into an oven.

Is there some new tech released by Apple that makes modern gaming possible on macs now? yes I am out of date

Would be super nice if Valve cared at all and coded Steam as a universal application - coz even with the new *HARDWARE ACCELERATION* on steam for MacOS, it still runs bad.

this hurts as I remember buying a $2000 iMac that came with 256MB Ram...and it could run all kinds of apps including video editing ones.

In the 60's, NASA put people on the moon using a toaster as a computer. That doesn't mean that in 2023, a computer should be like toasters.

Dropping 32-bit support made the Apple Silicon transition easier. Rosetta just needs to translate x64 code.

I agree that 16GB should be the minimum today and for better future-proofing. Unfortunately, some people continually tell us that the average person doesn't need more than 8GB and that 8GB is "more computer than most people need!" 🤣
I don’t think average users will play this game.

It’s nice but anyone who buys a Mac for gaming should see a shrink

So many superior alternatives and no I’m not talking about pc.

I understand but they apparently didn't work with anyone to make sure games would be available. It's like the transition from 10.4.10 to 10.5. So many games no longer functioned, and no one was willing to fix the problem.

People rambling bout 8GB not being enough to play this game (it is, it is just the minimum spec) while ignoring that the only 8GB Macs are ones that are minimum spec regardless of RAM.....

Played this game on PC and Mac M1, 8GB. Almost unplayable on Mac. Returned game in the end because it's targeted to a certain player. I like Skyrim, Cyberpunk, Sea of Stars, Final Fantasy. All RPG but BG3 takes it to a whole new level. If you just don't have the time to micro manage your characters, I would avoid. If you do, then so much potential to this game. As a game, it's probably one of the most detailed games I've come across. Enjoy (or avoid) depending on your schedule.

I ran one of those system requirement things using a site I just Googled. I have an older HP laptop with an 8th generation core Intel core I7 with 16GB RAM and a 512GB HD and an Invidia GeForce video card. I met the minimum requirements except for the graphics card -- I only have 2GB of RAM on it instead of 4.

So yeah, if/when I get an M2 Macbook Air in the Fall, I will definitely get one with 16GB RAM and 512MB of hard drive space. If nothing else for the higher speeds the 512GB HD has with it.

We saw it just this morning:

Or maybe it's that most MacBook Air users have no interest in playing games? 🤷‍♂️
First off 16GB is NOT needed to run Windows 10 or Windows 11. I can easily run Windows 10 or 11 with 8GB. Hell I was running Windows 10 on a 2009 ThinkPad 410 with 4GB. So I question the opinion of the person who said that it takes 16GB. That person's opinion is flatout false.

I own a 2018 i5 Mac Mini which I upgraded to 32GB and purchased a base model M2 Mini and the M2 Mini is twice as fast booting and opening apps with just 8GB. For my needs, 8GB is more than enough.

When it comes to playing games, I don't even consider a Mac. I have an Alienware and I just ordered a Lenovo Legion with an RTX 4090.

I've been playing the early access version of BG3 on a base 14" MBP M2 Pro with 32Gb RAM. It runs very well.

I'm not what most people would regard as a gamer and I've never played D&D so I'm quite bewildered whilst playing it (most of the time).

Anyway, it seems common sense to me that if Apple is trying to encourage game developers to release ports of big games onto the Mac then Apple needs to try to ensure that a large enough addressable market of decently-specced Macs is out there for the developers.

People are in here debating RAM and I'm thinking more about trying to fit this game on a 256GB drive. Also if it comes out for iPad it'll be unplayable on the base model of the Air and Pro unless they severely compress it.

the game is 124 GB in size. Good Luck buying a $60 game and downloading 124 GB of data. to play it.
At least it has an amount of content that justifies it. Plenty of stuff out there like call of duty has gone over 200GB in the past without much to justify that.

.If Apple never raises minimum Ram spec just because tons of people declaring 8GB Ram will last years or eternity, Apple silicon game will also be forever limited in scope and capability.
Or maybe future of Mac gaming is on Vision pro and not laptop where scope and capability will be old fashioned soon.

Thank you for attaching that $800 Dell computer. I guess Apple really HAS become bottom-of-the-barrel quality for equitable comparison. Lol!
