Anyone have any performance experience on the M2 Air with 16gb ram?
Maybe you should be the test and tell us how you fared? I think this would be a great litmus, especially since I was on the fence over an M2 Air.

for what Tim Cook charges for 16GB, you could just buy yourself a gaming PC for cheaper.
For any gaming PC owner I'd recommend that since Nov 2020 rather than waiting for ray tracing to arrive on the Mac.

It would likely made them wait more than 3 years to occur.

That's 3 years of no triple-A gaming! But all the Candy Crush they can get diabetes with!

Upgrades are where Apple makes its margins. Dell charges $40 to go from 8 to 16GB so they aren’t making much more margin on the higher configurations.

I absolutely agree that 8GB in 2023 is BS, as are the pricing tiers to higher configurations, but Apple has been doing this for ages, it will never change, and you're either willing to spend XXX for XXX configuration or you're not.

It's stupid, but I don't understand why people get so emotional about it either. If you're not happy, vote with your wallet.

The game needs 150GB to install.

I guess there is not much left for 256gb users.

System requirement for Baldur's Gate 3 is quite flat. It will cost less money to buy a "gaming" PC than upgrade base model M2.

  • RECOMMENDED:
    • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
    • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
    • Processor: Intel i7 8700K / AMD r5 3600
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Nvidia 2060 Super / RX 5700 XT (8GB+ of VRAM)
    • DirectX: Version 11
    • Storage: 150 GB available space
    • Additional Notes: SSD required

I've been playing RPGs since Final Fantasy 1 on NES, and 45 minutes into this game I requested a Steam refund because it's one of the most trash games I've ever played.

To each their own.

PS: I was playing on a MacBook Pro 16" w/ M1 Pro. The performance was fine, I just found the graphics and gameplay to be trash an hour in.
Calling this miracle of a game most trash is quite something :)

it is a complex adult d&d game like divinity original sin on steroid where reading and thinking are required, not for the little console kids who just want a linear progression cookie cutter final fantasy clone #100. Stick to the console rpgs..

Then don't buy it. Pretty simple really. The 16GB model (or 32GB, etc) is either worth the price to you or it's not - I don't understand why people get so butthurt over the issue.
Are you serious? Shame on you as you keep defending 8GB over 16GB for basic models.

This whole thread arguing about running a triple A game on minimum spec is quite pointless. It’s like complaining why it doesn’t run well on a pc with integrated graphics…

The real question is how does BG3 run on a high spec Mac vs gaming PC. Has anyone run the game on 4K and ultra setting using a m2 max 32gb? How does it compare performance wise vs say a rtx 3070 or 4070.

I have it running on rtx 3070 and it works great, but pain in the ass to switch to pc every time I want to play as all my other work is on mac. I don’t mind buying a mac copy to support this good company and mac gaming and not have to fire up the pc, if the performance is good on high setting on a mac studio m2 max

I already played BG3 on Mac since launch, via GeForce Now :) Same for the early access version on Stadia many months ago.

Admittedly it does need Chrome browser or the GFN app. But no Steam client needed (it needs to be in your Steam library though. And sadly no GOG version).

Yeah, I've been in the same boat. I already have a desktop PC, but would love to take some gaming on the road with me. I'm trying to figure out whether a 19 core 14" MBP would work, or if I should step up to the 30 core Max. None of this is cheap, but on the PC side I'd be spending close to three grand on a Razer anyway, and with the new Gaming Porting Toolkit I might be able to do the sort of gaming I want without having to deal with the disadvantages of having a Windows machine as my daily driver.

Actually try iTunes in 2003, the same as Steam. Then again as for Steam that was JUST for Valve’s games and didn’t open up to 3rd parties until 2005 for limited runs but kept expanding. For Mac users the Mac App Store is just a detached iTunes…

True but I wasn't counting iTunes since it didn't distribute software at the time.

I get what you are saying. However, I haven't experienced any glitches on my PS5. I'm talking about the game being played and running as it was intended, be it on PC, Mac (now), or Console. I'm don't care what it's like to play BG3 on some trash PC or a low end Mac with crappy specs. And my point stands. Look at the reviews anywhere you'd like regarding this game. They are impeccable.
You’re preaching to the chorus 😂. I have to finish DOS2, then I’m diving in BG3.

M1 Air 8gb is a POS in 2023. And the cost to upgrade Apple ram is outrageous money-grabbing on all their Macs.

Were you planning on gaming on one? Is that the problem?

The issue I have on the PC side is that nobody seems to want to use AMD for their premium 13" laptops, so you're stuck with Intel's integrated graphics. Wish Razer still made their Blade Stealth.

Is it important to play the first two games to fully understand or appreciate this one?

Meteor lake integrated graphic is approaching 3050TI level. It is not far from mid - high settings. And AMD counter part will be even better. Integrated graphic will improve significantly in next a couple of years. It is no reason to leave RAM as the bottle neck.

Barely playable on my wife's M1 iMac with 8gigs. You have to REALLY turn down all the graphics, and play at a resolution lower than 1080. She usually plays the PC version though via Nvidia Now, and has been since the PC launch of the game.

On my Macbook Pro M2 Max with 32gigs of RAM and 38 core GPU, I play at 4K with all the graphics turned up to max. This is the first time I've heard the fans on my Macbook ever really engage...and that includes doing renders with Blender and Davinci. I mean, it gets REALLY loud, fan wise. But it plays like butter. Haven't had any issues yet.

Thank you first useful info in this whole thread. How is the fps? Does it maintain 60+ in busy area with lot of spell casting effects
