If this is all the worst of the glitches, I'd say job well done. So a few hundred people get double charged. Big deal. It's easily fixed. The bigger issue, I think, is employees being clueless about Apple Pay, which doesn't help when problems arise. But if glitches like this aren't widespread, I'm definitely not too worried.

Maybe I've just had good luck with my bank, but I've never worried about double charges are other issues. They've always been very easily dealt with.

Some of the causes were because of simple issues (e.g. not being logged into a site when using Apple Pay) which would've been found had they tested it properly

This particular problem is being pegged on 3rd-party developer apps, so it's possible these developers didn't implement Apple Pay 100% correctly. But it does raise the potential for an extra level of testing at Apple's end before an app with this feature is released to the general public.

Not unexpected to have a few glitches for such a large and complex software rollout.

What I find most interesting is that the glitch only resulted in double charges. I expect we'll never see a glitch that results in zero charges. :)

All these little issues just don't instil a lot of confidence for me in apple. I being someone who is debating buying an iphone 6 like many others this doesn't help convince me to do so. Then again I'm Canadian and can't use apple pay nor do I really car to since I have NFC on my credit and debit cards anyway.

Do all the Android issues disuade you from buying an Android device too? There have been hundreds in the past year.

This story seems to put the issue on Apple pay when this really only is affecting Band of America customers.

So isn't this really and issue with Bank of America IT

If this were Google Wallet, people would be dissing "buggy Android"

This still affects customer perception

This is pretty hilarious, actually.

Those first day soda purchases, at the vending machines, are turning out to be pretty expensive.

This is not an Apple Pay issue. It is a B of A issue.

Apple Pay, paying with your iPhone 6/6s works at any terminal that accepts NFC payments.

I just read about this. I think people are blowing up too quick. Its a glitch, and the charges will be removed. Small issue really, IMO.

For the most part, it does just work, using existing payment systems. The glitch sounds like it's on BofA's part. In any case this is a pretty ambitious rollout, so there will inevitably be some bugs and some getting used to it.

It definitely just works. I've used it a few times already and love it actually. Simple, fast and secure.

Sort of pleased we haven't got Apple Pay here in the UK.

Contactless credit/debit cards is much more simpler and faster to make payments.

So let me guess, if the problem is with Apple, then other banks should have similar problems. But apparently only BoA's customers have experienced the double pay problem...

Now where ARE all those posts about how android has done it for a year but apple came around and made it work.

Priceless.

apple is REALLY on a bad run, as of late. I'd feel sorry for them if they didn't have billions sitting in a bank. Offshore. Not paying American taxes.

Someone's jealous.

I tend to agree. If this was an Pay issue wouldn't there be more users affected using different banks? BoA's story doesn't hold water here.

Well we pay 2x for some Apple gear here and there, they just want to branch that out.

*teasing*

Sure, no problem for the poor people who have to try to resolve this. Apple doesn't test any of their buggy software anymore. Instead they just call it beta.

If you had an education and knew anything about software, you would know software bugs don't show up 100% of the time. Go back to mom's basement.

lol

Lets flip what you just said around so we can see how contradictory and absolutely dumb it sounds.

you're obviously a genius.

Apple maybe a little too excited with this to make it a grand unveiling and ready to go live when they really should've tested it a little more first.

Some of the causes were because of simple issues (e.g. not being logged into a site when using Apple Pay) which would've been found had they tested it properly.

These sort of production introduction glitches are nothing new for Apple really, so it's not a Steve v Tim thing but just Apple in general. Maybe Tim could make testing more crucial..

You can only do so much testing. I'm sure there was testing on both Apple's part as well as each of the banks. But they can't think of every single possibility until it goes out into the "real world." Double-charges occur on credit cards for lots of reasons, most of which don't generate headlines, and are reversed out with little fanfare.

Apple haters just don't get it. The first payment is for the merchant, the second is for Apple. It's right there on page 57 of the terms and conditions.

Curious to see the bug details...

I'm really curious to see how this supposedly "broke".

My understanding was that the POS terminal queries the NFC, which uses a local security chip to generate a token which is passed to the POS terminal.

In other words, the POS terminal is the only thing filing a charge request against the card.

So how is Apple involved, at all? Does the token process require a connection to Apple and then Apple files the request to BofA? If so, and the POS people are doing the same thing, then isn't it BofA's end who is responsible for reconciling the requests?

In other words, isn't Apple Pay filing the payment through the POS terminal, and only AUTHENTICATING via Apple Pay? So the only way that double billing could happen is if BofA or the POS terminal double billed you????

(I don't have an iPhone 6 and I don't want one: this isn't pro- or anti- Apple, it's a question about how the POS part works :)
