if you cant see HDD going the way of the floppy, then your the fool sir.

As Flash gets more capacity and higher speeds for cheaper it will start becoming the norm. It wont be soon, but ipods will deffinatly be all flash at some point in the future.

Its not a matter of if but of when! Scientists can increase the efficiency of the hard drive tech all they want to but in the end solid state WILL overtake and render TOTALLY OBSOLETE platter based hard drives. That time is coming sooner than you think.

The beatles

""The world's largest catalogue of Beatles-related recollections will be unveiled in Liverpool this week."""

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7603286.stm

This article makes me predict that the Beatles catalogue will finally be brought to iTunes. That would certainly be a newsworthy event. I don't think that it is the main focus on Tuesday, what with the new ipods and such, but it certainly would be a big fat cherry on the sundae
:apple:

Good movie.

Great line! :)

So are you trying to say that there will be some alien rockers at this event? :p

Either that or Steve Jobs is deciding to branch out apple products into the high tech weapons market!
Ok I'm joking but think about it for a sec.

I mean, look at the fiasco that is the upgrading of the standard US combat rifle. All the other countries have a new high tech rifle fit for 21st century fighting. But yet we're still stuck trying to make a decision on a prototype to produce.
My choice would be the magpul masada or a host of other good contenders. But those idiot politicians can't use common sense and make up their minds. Not to blame them totally I think the thing of it is the politicians don't see a viable alternative that is futuristic enough to invest several decades of use into.

Can you imagine if Apple was assigined the task of designing a future rifle? :p

thats exactly what i was saying, and my "not soon" meant not in the next year or two, the capacity to size ratio just isnt there yet to make them even concievable for large capacity ipods.

soon in tech is MUCH sooner than soon in the year sense.

I wish Apple would give another teaser... I really feel like there's nothing to look forward to here.

Your statements leads me to my more than likely predictions.

- Apple will announce enhancements to iTunes that makes it more of a hub for digital content. I'd be happy for years with just NO MORE DRM music and nothing else, but maybe they will throw in...

- iTunes subscriptions tied to Mobile Me accounts or separate with live feeding over 3G/Edge/WiFi. I doubt it, but it's more likely than the weirdos expecting a Touch iPod Classic with the yet created 250GB 1.8" HDD. Or the crackheads that think the Classic will be replaced by a HDD toting Touch.

- Maybe an iTunes 8 redesign and more interactive store with more content. I feel it could use an update since we are using iTunes even more now with the iPhone and movie rentals. Give us more movies and give us more TV shows to download or rent.

- Lastly, a bunch of pissed off Apple fanboys that can't get their act together. The ones that need to calm down and stop speculating with only 1% of the facts. There isn't any new hardware, so don't expect new iPods, especially since the BTS deal is still going until the 15th. **STOP saying the Classic will disappear just because you don't have one, the Touch isn't all that.**

More fans will be upset by the lack of new sizes, they will come, but not yet. If they do, expect to pay MORE, not less. Apple hasn't changed their prices in quite some time, and when they did, they just gave us the student discount that everyone was mooching off of anyways.

Oh yeah, maybe a fat ugly iPod gets released that doesn't add to the functionality, it's just f**king fugly.

I like the way you think. Just to add...

I can really see a "curved back iPod touch" with "black plastic" to go along with the price cuts. Just like they cheapened up the iPhone (I don't care what Apple says about reception...which doesn't seem to be so hot on iPhone 3G anyway) - the plastic definitely makes it less expensive to produce.

Your "live feeding" idea is way out there - and maybe will come some day - but I think it's too soon for that. The last thing Apple should be doing at this point is adding more and more stuff to Mobile Me, considering what a mess the launch was. Maybe down the road, but I don't think we will see an all-you-can-eat subscription iTunes service just yet (although I hope I'm wrong).

It's a bad idea to start arguing with people on rumors. Because that's what they are - rumors - and nobody knows if the facts are right except Apple.

I doubt the event will just be for a new iPod nano. An iPod nano introduction takes like 20 minutes, tops.

Can you imagine if Apple was assigined the task of designing a future rifle? :p

Yup.
The rifle would look very good, very clean.
It wouldn't have a way to adjust the sight, it wouldn't have a swappable carridge, but they're willing to concede, so at least you can manually put a single bullet in it a time, there would be a huge amount of misfires and Apple wouldn't acknowledge the problem.
And of course: unless you used an Apple designed strap it wouldn't fire at all.

I know what you mean , but we only have to wait while tomorrow :) not long now

By tomorrow Apple's secrets about the event will be springing so many leaks that we will probably know almost all of what is going to happen. I'm telling ya Steve is going to send a hit squad to take out the leak thats feeding Kevin Rose with his intel. Don't be surprised if we also find Kevin Rose missing as well!

You want new laptops tuesday......but you ain't gettin any!!!! :D

ROFL. :D

And, on a more serious note, there is almost no chance there will be any new laptops come Tuesday. Apple is focusing purely on its iPod/iTunes market at this event, as is incredibly obvious by both the banner and the available rumors.

dude, chill, you can't pick up sarcasm through text. When most people say likely, its if this ever happened it would be the greatest thing to ever happen. People are allowed to hope though, whats exciting about being realistic.

"Big Deal"

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if Apple is really telling the press that this is a "big deal" -- perhaps that is really referring to the "big deal" they made with the Beatles, who are supposed to also have a big announcement this week. So, my predictions...

- iTunes 8
- new iPods
- Beatles mega deal

Perhaps iPhone 2.1

"Product transition"

Maybe the product transition that would reduce margins is these three things:
  • September 9 release of iPod updates with large price cuts ($50 more than usual) that push the bulk of the iPods down. A large price drop was rumored by Kevin Rose.
  • September 9 release of the iPhone OS mini-tablet. It acts as both a high-end iPod(-ish) and a handheld content creation/editing platform. This will have new hardware and additional software, like maybe Atom, iLife, and iWork. The new technologies will give it an initial high price, but as Apple stated, it will go down as time passes.
  • October release of new Mac notebooks. A redesign, updated specs, and new features like a glass trackpad translate to reduced margins.
  • October release of the Mac OS X tablet. The multi-touch display will initially demand a high price, but as Apple stated, it will go down as time passes.
I would say at most one of those tablets would be released this year.

Have we ever been genuinely happy? I find in general the MacRumors community is happiest just before updates or sometime in between updates, but never right after.
Completely agreed. We just can't be satisfied. :p

There will be no new Laptops at this event. The redesigned Macbooks and Macbook Pro's will come at MacWorld.
Why?

Not sure if this has been discussed but has there been any rumors to possible pricing of the classic series?

Also when the new models come out do the older generation models go on some sort of clearance sale?

You're probably right about the bulk of it. But by Apple saying "big deal", I'm expecting something more. However, Beatles on iTunes would be a "big deal".
