Doh.

Apple do a lot of things ahead of the curve when it comes to ditching old standards. Floppies, Serial and parallel, CRTs.. HDDs will see their comeuppance in ipods eventually. Not sure about desktops, depends on too many factors, HDDs suit desktops fine for now.

Looking forward to this event, Its much more exciting when people aren't really sure what to expect. I like the look of the new nano too.

Tuesday June 9th was when MobileMe was announced.

It seems that alot of new products are announced on 'Tuesday 9th' though. The iPhone 3G was announced on Tuesday June 9th, as was MobileMe, and the original iPhone and Apple TV were announced on Tuesday January 9th (2007).

YEAH!

And don't forget about those inevitable touch screen displays and rollout keyboards that are bound in the laptops once prices come down years from now.
You don't think there's quite a difference between your sarcastic suggestions which wouldn't be useful at all, and going from hdd to flash – something that is already going on all over the place?

And I don't know why anyone would think 1TB of HDD space is too much since 4k HD is going to be standard in about 3 or 4 or 5 or so years.
What do yo mean, a 4k? As in 4000 GB i.e. 4TB?

Then the holographic displays will be out soon after that.
Can you make up your mind whether you want to be sarcastic, completely off-track or whatever?

p.s. it seems that everyone is forgetting that the SSD in the MBA sucks up MORE power than the HDD with minimal speed increase.
Yes, none of us suggested that the SSD in the MBA was the cream of the crop, now did we?

Due to the fact that SSD don't idle down.
Er, yes, that is a _part_ of the reason.

That didn't stop NBC/Universal

If that happens say goodbye to Apple credibility in the future.

Something big is going to happen.

And it's all about music.

Apple is a new music label.

Apple as a music label? It would be game over for the other established labels.
Even if thats not it I think the "big deal" is going to be something that is a big deal but not necessarily hardware related. Yes, we will have the new ipods but the cats out of the bag on that one.
The real news is either going to be:
No more drm
Apple is a new music label
firmware update for iphone/ipod touch with great new features
itunes 8 with great new features

Not long to wait now.
Hey macrumors where is that spoiler free video link? I need to prepare my computer for tuesday night!

Can you imagine Apple launching as a record label - exclusive distribution through iTunes, artists get 70% of revenue and retain the rights, Apple get 30%. Number of high profile artists already signed and Apple offering to buy artists out of existing contracts if they think they are a big enough draw.

Yeah, that would turn the industry on its head and give control back to the artists.

Take it easy, wasn't being that serious any way, and it wasn't funny to begin with.

Just mimicking the way people talk about future tech like it's really set in stone. Like those that can remember the G5 PowerBook or 2MB floppy discs.

Didn't need to go off the wall and pull apart the quote.

4K is the resolution of the Red One camera.

The chaos this could cause would probably be a bit scary. If apple did manage to take a giant chunk of the music publishing pie they're getting a strange amount of control.. They'd have to make it so you can buy/download the tracks to devices other than ipods, DRM free or not, stores like amazon could be screwed if apple were the label, making you have to use itunes to buy certain artists.. Scary. - Apple would be setting themselves up for all sorts of scary anti monopoly investigation i suspect, unless they open things a bit more..

Flash is much faster than a spinning HD. They will discontinue HDs when prices to size are low enough, to support more advanced software requiring flash for speed. ie. iPod Touch which would not function well if on HD.

I'm completely at ease. I suppose you're aware that posting on a foum might make someone respond to what you say?

I know, but as far as I can see, you did that to prove a point. Your sarcasm seemed to convey the opinion that the the electronics world weren't going flash.

Didn't need to go off the wall and pull apart the quote.

But it's so much fun! People tend to be p..... off – especially when the picking apart says shows the premises as what they really are.

Thanks. I looked it up after this. Looks like it the the horisontal number of pixels. 4096 to be exact. Thanks for the info. I never heard of that camera before. 10lbs without lenses or anything :(

What do you mean it wouldn't function well if on a hdd? Of course it would. The flash in most digital audio players are butt-slow, and the touch is no exception.

I'm aware of Google. However, since we were talking storage I thought he was talking about HardDisks when he said "HD". I'm really not into movies and technology associated with it, so the leap to home film entertainment centres weren't really a straightforward one.

Leo Laport just said he has a source that just told him Home Automation and Home servers.

I cannot see Apple entering the Home Automation market at this time. And a Mac Pro is already a home media server. :)

A recording label - at least a serious one that would appeal to major acts - is a lot more then just an iTunes store. Apple would need to create recording studios, enter into contracts with radio stations and other media outlets to promote the artists, sign contracts with CD-pressing companies (because while sales continue to fall, artists still sell them by the boatload), and everything else.

Creating that infrastructure and hiring the talent to staff it would be very expensive and likely be a serious "attention diversion" from Apple's current core competencies...

No way that is happening, there is already an Apple Records it was started by the Beatles in 68'

The 32GB single flash modules are very expensive. Considering the subsidized price of the current iPhone, Apple could offer it for say $399 or even $499 in the US (subsidized), but that is a huge price premium for only double the storage.

I suppose, but we will see.... they will definitely have large capacity iPod Touch though

I think a product like an iMac touch would be HUGE and very unexpected. Either that or some kind of gaming system.

think about this: IF MS is announcing new zunes on the same day--without a super-special event?--apple better have something to top that or people might finally say the emperor has no clothes.

so iPhone Nano.

(when i'm proved right, i want it noted this is not the first time i've predicted this will be the big news at this event) ;)

Don't worry, I get pissed off when people push others to believe that tech won't change in the next 5 - 7 years. Tech will only get faster and larger, but nothing new will ever be released.

I do see flash becoming more prevalent but we will never know if they will become the drive/storage method of choice in 3 or more years.

Should have been more clear with the HD abbreviation. Especially in this world of digital overlaps. I have never shot with, or even held a Red One, but the average studio is about 10lbs with lens, the older ones are heavier... and let's not talk about 8mm or 16mm film.

FOOLISH. Please take your own advice. They will NEVER go all flash. There will always be HDs that eclipse the amount of flash storage for the same price.

if you cant see HDD going the way of the floppy, then your the fool sir.

As Flash gets more capacity and higher speeds for cheaper it will start becoming the norm. It wont be soon, but ipods will deffinatly be all flash at some point in the future.

Not an intentional slap at MS, but the reason they are not having some huge Zune launch event is because the media and the public do not really seem to care all that much about Zunes.

so iPhone Nano.

I'm extremely confident we won't see it. An LCD touch-screen the size of the current iPod Nano "fatty" would likely be more expensive then the screen used in the iPhone / iPod Touch (since so many other companies have adopted those dimensions) and the smaller form factor would impact packaging and result in a smaller battery pack which means less battery life.

If Apple was still charging $399 for the 8GB and $499 for the 16GB iPhone 3G, I'd be slightly more inclined to believe we might see a $299 4GB and $349 8GB iPod Nano. But with Apple dropping the price of the 3G models to $199 and $249, respectively, that negates the need for a cheaper iPhone that gives up functionality for a lower price.

And for all those who claim Apple must offer an HDD iPod because of the low price, this is Apple and Apple consumers, folks. Price is not a primary motivator with them. A 128GB Flash iPod at $399 would handily outsell a 160GB HDD iPod at $349 (or even $299, I imagine) thanks to offering better shock protection and battery life.

is it tuesday yet??? :) *sigh* the waiting is killing me. i just find myself combing the macrumors forums & other mac sites with the hopes that someone will find out some more information about the new ipod touches to be released

I did think the "Lets Rock" was a bit geriatric, but hey, don't want to be too hip :p

I'm sorry but when I read or hear the phrase "Lets Rock!" I automatically think about Cpl. Vasquez screaming "LETS ROCKKKKK!!!" before she lets rip exploding tip caseless automatic gunfire from her futuristic heavy machinegun complete with counterbalancing tripod! :D

Good movie.

Great line! :)

So are you trying to say that there will be some alien rockers at this event? :p

sorry macbook enthusiasts, but I just don't see this setting realistic for the macbook update announcement. If they do indeed release this 'tall' ipod nano, they will surely not include the macbooks into the day.
