- new iPod Nano design.
- new iPod Touch Nano.
- high capacity 30 and 60 GB iPod "Classic" offered with flash memory only.
- Mostly DRM-free iTunes tracks.
- Mobile Me storage of your music, and streaming anywhere you are.

Does anyone here understand marketing? Consumer demand, manufacturing processes, how to hype products, when not to and to release things?

There is, no way at all there will be an ipod nano touch if the 4g pictures are real (and sadly, after the orange one, I believe they are real) period.

The classic will not come in flash memory only at 30 / 60gb either, it will remain disk based, until they can replace them with flash in about 12 - 24 months.
The ipod touch is getting a shape refresh we know that, maybe some new features, possibly more space but the classics will just get a shape or size change, they will not cancel them as there is still many users out there who like to have over 100gb with them.
Flash ram is still more expensive than even those ultra tiny hard disks in the ipods.

People need to stop foolishly saying Apple will go to all flash based iPods.

That would be extremely stupid, and Apple is not stupid.

They will NEVER go to all flash based players, because HDs will always have more capacity for less money.

FOOLISH? What's foolish? Going all flash makes perfect sense. Right now it would be too expensive to do, i don't see it happening for a few years but its def not foolish. Your foolish for thinking they'll NEVER go to flash!

Flash saves battery life, makes the mp3 player smaller and thinner, and has a longer life span than HD.

Quit posting if you dont know what your talking about....

FOOLISH. Please take your own advice. They will NEVER go all flash. There will always be HDs that eclipse the amount of flash storage for the same price.

Oh well, the pundits must have been right. Apple has over-stayed its welcome and now is just another big boy the public can hate on. It is a sad day that Apple has to unveil a building sized banner four days in advance to get people to pay attention. It is doubly sad that Apple minions have to hit the street and tell the news that there will be some big news at the event. Man, I hope it's not another pair of sox or boom-box/Hi-Fi. Time to find another Silicon Valley garage start-up to champion if this is a flop—and that would be anything short of introducing something totally new and unexpected that everyone will have to run out and buy immediately (sorry Steve, no announcing hardware that is still a year out—that just doesn't cut it anymore).

Thanks, that was worth a good laugh.
Seriously, look at how much attention was focused on RUMORS of this event taking place. You doomsday-rant people are stretching things here.

I'm sure the same thing was said of punch cards, tape drives, and floppy disks.

on 9th in nyc?

hi guys, any chance to get the new ipods on 9th in nyc (any experiences to other releases)? and btw what happens with the older models - $$sale$$???

Back to that word.... FOOLISH

FLASH is totally in the cards for all apples products. Example: Macbook air.. Apples first implementation in a computer. Thats just the start. The only reason they use the HD in the classic is because flash (at this point in time) is too expensive to have an adequate amount of space on it. Once the prices drop over the years you bet your ass there putting flash in those ipods. It would be silly not too! Everyones turning to flash. Even the harddrive makers are concentrating on flash drives because theres more of a demand for it. Because of the reasons ive listed before....

WHO'S WITH ME ON THIS ?

I think someday we'll get to the point where flash is cheap enough that its benefits will outweigh the lesser cost of HDDs.

Just looked up pricing for 64gb of flash ram, if you want a 64gb ipod touch, it's going to be at least 399$ US, since apple will have to buy them at around 220$ US (very rough guess) in bulk
(I don't know how much the touch costs in the US now?)

No sale. They're used to send to people with faulty iPods of the same model.

Daveman. I'm with you. For portable audio players I haven't owned a HDD-based one for years. Instead I use one with flash and an SDHC-slot for even more flash.
My audio recorders records to either CF alone, or to both CF and HDD (the HDD is only used as an "extra" and will be swapped for a 2.5" SSD in due time).

Not only for me, but for the entire industry: Mechanical disk storage is on the way out. Fast.

Hopefully they are going to fix the apps installs so that they don't keep crashing the iPhone.

I am on my second iPhone 3G and my fourth complete rebuild due to issues / hangs following apps installs. Despite the fact Apple put supposed safeguards o n the apps there does seem to be the potential for multiple apps to cause system failures. Perhaps Apple should concentrate on creating complete isolated containers for these apps before they release them.

So far I think the iPhone is a great device but the apps store experience has not been great.

- Lastly, a bunch of pissed off Apple fanboys that can't get their act together. The ones that need to calm down and stop speculating with only 1% of the facts. There isn't any new hardware, so don't expect new iPods, especially since the BTS deal is still going until the 15th. **STOP saying the Classic will disappear just because you don't have one, the Touch isn't all that.**
.

The last ipod event was done during the bts promo.

Apple will be all flash players within 3 years, flash ram will drop in price over the next 3 years, I believe Seagate has already purchased a flash company to stay competitive.

No there won't - it's the law of diminishing returns.
hard disks break more often due to moving parts, they are less shock resistant, use more power.

I am a huge fan of hard disks but sooner or later technology will focus on flash more and more and more till it becomes the cheaper option.
Just like CRT monitors to LCD
LCD was more expensive, then same, now less.

I'm sure the same thing was said of punch cards, tape drives, and floppy disks.

Nothing wrong with punch cards ..... - you could at least have a reliable JCL deck to boot the mainframe from and the punched squares were great as confetti or for sticking in the air vents of cars :)

Flash is also increasing capacity at a faster rate than traditional hard drives. It will eventually eclipse HD-based storage in most applications (not just iPods). Flash is—if only currently theoretically—faster, cheaper, more durable, thinner, lighter, and more efficient. As far as mass storage goes we'll probably see a drop in capacity for a short time during the mass-transition to flash—i.e. max HD capacity would be, say, 1 TB and max flash would be 512 GB, but producers would still drop the HD and push flash.

YEAH!

And don't forget about those inevitable touch screen displays and rollout keyboards that are bound in the laptops once prices come down years from now.

And I don't know why anyone would think 1TB of HDD space is too much since 4k HD is going to be standard in about 3 or 4 or 5 or so years. Then the holographic displays will be out soon after that.

p.s. it seems that everyone is forgetting that the SSD in the MBA sucks up MORE power than the HDD with minimal speed increase. Due to the fact that SSD don't idle down.

so eventually when there are 10TB HDs for the price of 5TB flash drives, the flash drives wouldn't be the right choice? eventually adding capacity to the drives won't be so much of a priority. remember you're talking about iPods that only need to hold music, video, applications etc...

EDIT: everyone's already agreed really, haven't they :/ oops
