This one's a real mystery. From the look of that banner, they really are treating this as a big event. The cost for one of those isn't proportionate to the gravity of a one-time event to introduce a new iPod nano.

If iTunes 8 is coming out, Quicktime 8 should be as well. Logic (Apple's music editing/creation suite) is also due for an update -- it's a year old on Sept. 12th, and comes with the soon-to-be-outdated Quicktime 7 Pro.

- new iPod nano, touch
- iPhone 2.1 firmware
- iTunes 8
- Quicktime 8
- Logic Studio 2

That seems like a decent amount of new products, all AV related, and all together, probably represents a significant amount of Apple's revenue.

I'm still hesitant to call any of those "big" news.
I could see Logic Studio 2 being "big", though (although I doubt there would be anything there that would warrant the "big" monicker, except for more empty marketing fluff they have had such success with in recent years all the while not delivering).

I still think it's very possible that Apple might announce new Macbooks and Macbook Pros at this event. If Apple is calling this event "big," why not announce what a lot of us have been waiting for?

I agree they could but they wont be available with the usual 2-3 day wait

The Sept 9th event will focus on the iPod.

I doubt that we will see other hardware updates -- although I would like to be wrong on this.

we might not see them but we might hear of them just like we heard of apple tv in the september and it got more press at mac world then released in february I think.

QuickTime 8 is NOT coming out, because QuickTime X is coming in snow leopard only a few months after this.

Could be.

As I stated, I would like to be wrong on my prediction.

iTunes/iPod related items makes sense.

New MB/MBA/MP or Mac Mini do not.

"big deal" + "Let's Rock" + Itunes 8 = All Beatles albums now finally available on Itunes. Guest appearance of Paul and Ringo at the announcement?

Well, that's my guess. Or else "big deal" may be exactly that - something large(r) in size with an attractive price tag, like a 10" Itouchtablet subcompactcomputerthingy for a-buck-three-eighty.

I know that but usually when theres a keynote macrumors changes to macrumorslive and there are text based stuff. Thats not happening this time?

Not really. MacRumors doesn't do it for the events that they don't get invited to (which is like none of them). The reason why they can do WWDC is because you don't have to get invited...you just pay for the WWDC ticket.

the updated nanos, touches, etc. are small news and apple has let the pics circulate without undertaking any action. apple is not a company that would say this is a "big deal" and have the event showcase something that is not a big deal.

i agree with other posters that drm-free itunes or something big like that is what is likely to be unveiled sept 9th, unless you guys have other ideas.... ?

I agree whole-heartedly. If Apple says this is a big deal and that the press should be there, then there's something big coming at this event. Apple has such a good relationship with the media that I don't feel like they would risk that reputation just for some quick publicity for redesigned iPods. To me, something that gets redesigned every September is not huge "news."

As for what it could be, if DRM-free iTunes comes out, I would definitely call that a huge announcement.

Have their been actual rumors of DRM-free iTunes at this event that I've missed? Or is it the forums inductively trying to figure out what could make this event "huge?"

Damn, why no live updates from MR? I don't want to have to be on engadget during this thing...

I wish that would happen. That would be pretty crazy. The beatles rule.

I hope we hear SOMETHING about them, but if we do I imagine that it will be a relatively short time frame that they're released (within a month/month and a half). Can you imagine Apple saying--"hey, we're redesigning our MacBooks, but you can't buy one for six months!" That seems like it would kills sales of the current generation.

Of course that's basically what they did during the Intel transition...who knows!?!

I want one thing out of this show. Apple to fix the problems with the iPhone 3g and 1st Gen running 2.x software as stable as 1.1.4.
Give me a phone that is stable and I'll keep my 3G iPhone. If not I'm returning it and after 20x years of being an Apple Guy, I'll hold out for Android. My restocking fee is $30.00.

no problems with our 5 3G phones...

Yeah when you need to protect trade secrets and run a company in this day and age maybe prudence and some paranoia will save you from being stolen by the competition. Again 5 3Gs working flawlessly here....

Agreed. My two white 3G phones have always worked perfectly. No crashes, no lag, no dropped calls. 3G works perfectly in my area. I often listen to last.fm for hours in my car travelling all over my city and never drop my 3G connection. Both my phones have 2.0.2.

The guy in the poster looks to be holding that bu!!***** iPod Nano!

I get a feeling we may be really disappointed in Apple in the next few days.

As always right after updates, Digital Skunk.

Have we ever been genuinely happy? I find in general the MacRumors community is happiest just before updates or sometime in between updates, but never right after.

Every time this is what happens. Expectations rise, rise, rise, rise and rise, and then once the announcement hits, there is no possible way it can please everyone and live up to expectations. You can't please everyone at the same time, and Apple isn't going to try to (as it shouldn't).

Damn, why no live updates from MR? I don't want to have to be on engadget during this thing...

Engadget does some fine live updating. I like the pics.

Almost Sunday Peace's Picks.

Likely

1. All Flash based iPods
2. Multi-Touch Nano
3. Programable Click Wheel
4. True Surround Sound on all iPods and the Apple TV.
5. iTunes 8.0
6. QT 7.5.5
7. Remote plays to the iPod Touch and the iPhone
8. Wireless syncing
9. OS 10.5.5 released

Possible :

1. New Apple TV
2. New 8" Apple TV Touch
3. The Beatles Catalog all in 5.1 audio

I registered after seeing this and realised something:
Apple were very subtle in planting a secret message to all of us.
On the MobileMe Login page, notice the date widget?
Its Tuesday 9
- the BIG DAY for the computer industry (and this tuesday)
Very interesting i say...

Tuesday June 9th was when MobileMe was announced.

It's going be something big.

iPod Touch GPS is what I hope for, but it sounds like it will be bigger even than that.
