People who do that will have battery packs...14 hour plane journey? That’s not likely for most people let’s face it....
Which is my complete point. If you don't have a port on an iphone, you cannot connect it to a battery pack.

Dropping the lightning connector could mean replacing it with usb-c. I can’t see no connector at all... it would disenfranchise many who would not be able to charge on the go.

Well, it's NOT above Apple to do just that. They even have their own, custom word for the disenfranchising process.

They call it...

Wait for it...

COURAGE

They'll sell you a USB to charge mat dongle, so you won't be completely naked tho.

The better question is, did we learn nothing from Apple Watch? I think a completely wireless iPhone is very feasible, and would be great! I’m all for removing the ports.
Apple Watch is completely different from the phone. NO ONE tries to use their Apple Watch while it’s sitting on its charger... lol once you set it there, you leave it until you are ready to put it back on. It charges a lot quicker than phones since the battery is significantly smaller. People actually use their phones while charging.

I’ll be disappointed if they don’t go USB-C with the iPhone Pro, given that they went with it with the iPad Pro. Just keep it consistent Apple.

Pro Range=USB-C, Regular=Lightning.

I like the idea, assuming wireless charging by 2021 will be fast charging!

My BMW has wireless Carplay but anyone who’s wired can get this dongle
Too many suspicious 5 star short reviews on that site. Are they rebadging a Chinese module? Complaints that things like the steering wheel buttons and mic don’t work.

edit: some pretty damning indictments on other sites.

If Apple made such a device (and it worked) I might be tempted.

You mean like......... the Apple Watch? No way, get outta hereeeee.

iPhones get used a lot more than AppleWatch, and the things that the iPhone does makes it more important to not run down to power reserve. My S5 LTE AppleWatch has been off the charger for 16 hours today, and is at 59% battery. But my iPhone 11 Pro Max would be at least <10% or dead in that time if I didn't top it off during the day, since I'm using it as my primary device for email, browsing, talking, watching, listening, and mapping.

When I went to a theme park for 12 hours in 2018 (Universal and Animal Kingdom), and I used my iPhone with the park's app for maps and wait times or ordering food, in addition to doing all the usual things that I also do on my phone, my battery would be dead before the day was over. So the last time we went in October I brought a Xs Max and also a 7+ and split my usage between the two starting at 9AM, and by 11PM both were just below 40% charge.

Neither one would have made it all day on a single charge - my 6000 mah Mophie slim battery pack is slightly smaller than the iPhone 7+ and would be easier and cheaper to carry along than a second iPhone, while giving me 1.5 charges of my iPhone thru my 4" long lighting cable.

We need to have a way to top it off while being out and about, and Qi charging isn't that optimal when you aren't stationary. My Chinese wireless Qi charging pack from Amazon is 2x as thick as a 7+, and less efficient than wired charging (slower), so it would be like carrying 3 iPhones in my pocket just to add 50% of a charge to my 11 Pro Max while they're in my pocket together.

Wouldn't the phone this year be the iPhone 11S? unless they are finally going to break that pattern

I bet they're not calling it 11S.
Fist, it sounds weird. iPhone Xs Max sounded weird, but now they added Pro so it would be iPhone 11S Pro Max, awful.
If they add 5G and maybe a new design it sure deserves a new model name like 12. iPhone 8 was very similar to 7 yet they didn't call it 7S.
The problem would be 2021, because 12S Pro Max would still sound bad

That would seriously **** up people who have expensive cars with wired-only CarPlay.

Great, I just bought a car with wired CarPlay. If the 2021 iPhone happens to have no ports, I would need to buy 100 EUR wireless dongle and couple wireless chargers just to use my 1200 EUR phone. Oh, and another wireless charger for my car. Sounds awesome.

If that's the case, I would rather buy last years wired model and stick with that until my next car has wireless CarPlay and charging.

a completely wireless device is absolutely stupid
Well, wasn't the same thing said about the iPhone itself because it chucked the physical key keyboard in the digital dumpster? Something to the tune of: “Cellphones absolutely positively have to physical key keyboard or they’re useless. Except to hippy avocado toast loving millenials that will buy any dumb thing with a fruit logo on it.”

I also remember how criticism of the OG iPhone went something like: “that giant 3.5” color screen is too stupid large, because, see again, the physical key keyboard necessity.”

Or how about Steve Jobs famously rejecting Adobe Flash and Java for the iPhone and iPad.

That’s not to say Apple’s never made bad choices or dumb products. A totally wireless no port iPhone could be one of them. But, then again AirPods were supposed to absolutely stupid. And now how many flagship phones have dropped the headphone jack? Even Samsung has scorched earth their prior ads mocking Apple on the headphone jack.

So, I don't think its that back and white.

Of course they're not going to completely remove the ports, Apple isnt THAT stupid. But they are stupid enough to do crap like this maybe in 5 years time..

I think it is too soon to move to a Qi only iPhone, but eventually we'll get there.
Qi needs to be everywhere though. In the car, on your desk at office, on public places like bars or restaurants so while you have a meal you can put the phone down and charge it. That way the vast majority of people should be able to make it through the day.
We're not there yet, Qi is slow and isn't widely available. 2021 is simply too soon.

I already rarely ever use the lightning port so that wouldn't be much of a problem. I'll be interested in seeing what they do for charging though. If they don't include a wireless charger in every box, then you'll be buying the device with no way to charge it in the box. Plus, if Apple doesn't end up developing their own wireless charger, you'll be required to go out and buy a third party charger to be able to even use the device.
It's worse. If you are like me and often charge your phone at work, you need a wireless charger there as well. I have chargers in many places. Living room, kitchen, work, and a box that I take on holiday with a five port charger and lots of cables. Each would need a wireless charger. Forgot: I have a dual charger in the car as well, and so has my wife.

Fair enough, but iOS devices are meant to be throwaway in 2 years.
People still telling this nonsense? Top of the range iPhones are sold with 3 year contracts, so they _must_ last three years. And a phone that sells for $1149 today will be handed down and down and down and down and live for eight years at least.

Hope they add USB type C so it can share the newer Mac & iPad connectors.

Or maybe do the Apple thing and remove the port altogether, which I personally wouldn't miss if they did but I am sure it will send a strong shockwave to the tech community and would feed these Youtube tech reviewers with monetized clicks for a year or so.

(s) Imagine the accessories Apple and/or auto-makers could sell to "fix this problem" for us! Wireless charging pads that enable Bluetooth CarPlay, and only $200 for the convenience of wireless CarPlay! Of course it wouldn't be available at launch, it'll take at least 4 months for availability.(/s)
For real though, I'm going to need a real port, be it lightning or USB-C. As long as I can plug in my phone to use CarPlay and not have to deal with the garbage UX that is the Honda Clarity infotainment system, I'm happy.

That’s not courage, that’s stupidity.

Their word, not mine.

Apple Jedi use the phrase "pushing technology (or the industry) forward" interchangeably with "courage", as well.

One-port computers, single-port-type computers, 4-years of apparently-not-unacceptable-but-clearly-inferior-to-everybody-but-the-cheerleaders keyboards, dongle-hell, spinning drives in 2019/2020, a trash can, the removal of the headphone jack (at least 2-years too early), and that FRAKKING notch. All while paying premium prices.

In that context, I think the term "courage" does fit.

In the end, you have three choices, suck it up and pay up, join me in the Dark Side, or wait it out like I did.

I'm reaching Master Sisidous's levels of patience here, but it's finally starting to pay off (somewhat).
