In-display fingerprint sensor it the future, let the ugly notch rest in peace.

You never know what Apple is going to decide to do, but it seems like they've decided to go with face recognition... which doesn't bode well for any type of fingerprint sensor in future iPhones. I have a feeling android device manufacturers will follow suit as well.

People still care about the notch? I've had my X since day one. I don't even notice it.

I’m with you on this. Went into Apple to get a battery in my Air changed out. Picked up a display X. And after 5mins didn’t even notice the notch.

I still think of it as ears or horns that show more vs simply taking away that space with a bar. Helps with the full screen effect. Ditching a case is pretty essential too or I'd probably go back to an iphone 8 plus if I used a case.

Until then Apple can keep replacing the battery in my iPhone for free - yes free... As under EU law it is a proven manufacturing fault (Apple have admitted to) and so the repair / replacement is free up to 6 years from original purchase.
Under your interpretation of EU law.

How many people got free battery replacements in the EU in the time before the release of iOS 10.2.1? How many people got free battery replacements for a full six years in the EU for any kind of device whose battery performance dropped significantly (eg, below 50% of original capacity)?

Don't want a smaller notch. Want NO notch, and no rounded corners while we're at it. I'm perfectly fine with a "forehead" and "chin" for sensors. Also still want a home button. We have an X for app testing, and so many touch gestures to remember with no reference. I find the X frustrating and gimmicky.

I sure hope they have a successor to the 8 or I guess I'll be buying a year old phone... I guess it'll cheaper at least.
How dare you questioning the design philosophy of our great deity apple and the pastor Jony?!?

/s

Personally, i think is BS the heavy handed approach from apple.

The home button and touchID are more useful (to me) than the faceid and stupid gestures on the X.

How do you solve the dilemma that some people like you prefer no rounded corners and no notch and others prefer them to bezels? Should Apple offer both versions?

What's the point of having the notch if it gets smaller? How much space do you gain on the ears? Once they can get the sensor in a smaller footprint they can get rid of the notch and just leave a tiny bezel on top

Definitely agree with this. Removing the notch and getting Face ID under the display is something to get excited about, but making the notch 30% smaller....it's still there. The people who are bothered by it would likely still be unhappy there is something intruding into the screen. Others that don't mind it already don't mind.

The prevailing thought is that Apple doesn't want to deal with the type of delays it faced with the iPhone X last year, and by keeping the hardware relatively unchanged, suppliers could avoid some retooling.

Of course it will look identical, Tims` Apple is known for milking the same iPhone design over and over. Its nearly impossible that a 2nd generation iPhone X will look different.

The 2018 X and X Plus will break records and FaceID will continue to be a success and loved by people who actually OWN the phone.

Own the Iphone X. The notch is noticeable, but not a hindrance in my day to day use. Can't say I love it, but it also does not take away from my iphone experience. Would I prefer it without a notch...absolutely (although i'm not sure if that is even feasible).

The Notch is one of Apple's most brilliant PR stunts. Bravo!

I'm not sure how it was a "stunt." It was a design decision/compromise. No matter what form the iPhone X took shape in, either with the notch or w/o, but a bigger bezel, but still smaller than other iPhones, it was going to get gobs of publicity for it's price and because it's the first radical iPhone makeover since the original.

I ended up succumbing to the OLED screen and got the X. It’s been my favorite iPhone yet although I really, really wish they would do one that fits in the iPhone SE case size. The notch never bothered me. When I first saw pics before announcement I really thought it would bug me but once I saw it in real life it was a non issue. Even so, I wouldn’t mind it being a bit smaller in some way. It’s wouldn’t get me to upgrade just for that but if they made it a bit lighter or put a bigger camera sensor on it then that would.

True, but a camera sensor can only be so small, plus the earpiece and other sensors.

Smaller earpiece also means denigration in sound quality and volume. Other sensors have similar technical size constraints as the camera sensor otherwise they could be the size of a spec of dust.

Does this mean that Apple would move to a camera based FaceID like the One Plus???
Why would they go backward?

It's absolutely hilarious people think TouchID will come back.

FaceID was NOT a fallback plan. They didn't spend any time with putting TouchID under the screen once FaceID was viable.

True. The notch is irrelevant. It doesn't bother me and everything works just fine with it. Face ID login and authentication is great!

Well, to a point. If I'm taking my phone out of my pocket Face-ID is great. If my phone is on my desk then it's a bit annoying because inevitably I have to pull it closer and enter my passcode. In the days of Touch-ID the phone could stay tap my finger on the home button.

In many situations Face ID IS more convenient. Overall Touch ID is more versatile.

Well this is a pretty safe bet that anyone could have guessed. Of course they’re continuing development of the feature.

It’s only natural that as they develop newer, more advanced sensors and the technology and manufacturing processes improve, the size of the parts shrink.

They didn’t develop the TrueDepth system and say, right that’s it done, we need never touch it again ffs. They’ve never stopped working on it since they acquired PrimeSense nearly 5 years ago.

You were in the labs these past few years?

Face ID may not have been a fallback plan, who knows. You'll never get Apple to admit it anyway -- wouldn't put the technology in the right light. But it's not perfect. If touch under glass tech improves I can see Apple employing phones with both technologies. Each has their own strength. It's not a zero-sum game.

No, I believe the news that came out and I'm not a conspiracy theorist.

A smaller notch is still fugly. Look at the Essential phone which is an excellent phone with ceramic build quality but the notch is the reason it's not selling well even after price drops. iPhone X is even fuglier.
