You don't need to root for anyone to appreciate a good baseball performance. I don't even like Kenny Rogers, but I had more fun watching him throw that game the other day than I have watching any baseball game in a while. Just watch. You might be surprised at how good it can get :)
In all fairness this could be a good series, Tigers pitching A's hitting, I want the one that has the best chance to beat the Mets to win.

The problem is I don't know who I want to root for. I guess I will jump on the A's wagon for a while. Now if the Mets make the World Series I will root hard against them.:p

You root for the teams playing against the team's from your division. That's why I'm excited that the Twins are out but pissed that the Tigers went on. I hope the A's kick their ass.

What's the problem with the Mets? If I can get over them beating the Dodgers, surely you can get over them winning the Series. They are from New York, you know. ;)

Funny thing, the last time I was in New York City, a few years ago, I made a little project out of coming home with a Mets cap. Yankee caps were everywhere but Mets caps were nowhere to be found, so right away it was a challenge. I got a bit of kick out of walking into one tourist shop after another in Manhattan and asking for a Mets cap. The surprised and slightly offended shop keepers (usually in a thick Asian or Middle Eastern accent) responded "No Mets, Yankees!" -- which reminded me of the old Saturday Night Live routine, "No Coke, Pepsi!"

So, are Mets caps easier to find in New York City now? That alone would be a positive development.

Hey, I pulled for the White Sox last year! I don't fall into the same category as you. I like the Tigers. I like the A's too. I do have trouble pulling for any team in the NL except the Dodgers though. Guess I'll be 'rooting' for the AL this year

Its a lot like the Yankees/Red Sox you don't like the other team, Same goes for Yankees/Mets, Most true Met fans hate the Yankees, and most Yankee fans feel the same about the Mets. The only way I would root for the Mets is if they are playing the Braves or Red Sox.:)

In a Met fans eyes the only team is the Yankees and they feel like a second class citizen, No matter how the Yankees season went the Mets are looked as second best.

You don't need to tell me -- I grew up as a Mets fan, remember? ;)

Actually, to correct somewhat, I don't think Mets fans feel like second-class citizens, so much as Yankee fans prefer to think of them that way. Mets fans root for the underdog. Yankee fans root for royalty to prevail.

A lot of that could be that Mets management didn't want to spend money. Or when they did they made a lot of stupid moves.

Cards are lighting it up bottom of the sixth, 4-2 bases jammed with one down and Carpenter up. C'mon STL. Get this over with, tonight. Now, 6-2 as they batted around.

And the Cards are going to the NLCS!
Yeah! :D The double play top of the 8th was sweet. Carpenter settled down and looked great 'til he threw over 100 pitches. Good job by the bullpen, tonight.

Frack. So the rest of this is going to be on FOX? So much for Hi-Def. Freaking Rupert Murdoch is a loon. I have everything else in HD on Comcast but his station

I was checking that out. True?! We don't get that on cable down here, either, unless they pirate it out of Miami or Caracas. I don't care if it's announced in Spanish, at least we should be able to see it. Another reason to loathe FOX.

I disagree w/ that. I, and most yanks fans I know, don't hate the mets. We actually like them. We want them to make the playoffs every year.

Since we suck and choke in the playoffs lately, I am actually rooting for the mets. Why not? I'd also like to see the Tigers make it too.

I am a BASEBALL fan, not just a yankees fan. :)

You can't blame Fox for not having HD its the local affiliates and the cable company you have to complain to, Murdoch doesn't own the locals.

The local affiliates do have HD. OTA. Murdoch has a thing with cable companies making money off of his precious Hi-Def broadcast.

The problem is that the rules of fandom are quite complex. For example, I jumped on the Yankee bandwagon in 1996 after promising to support them against all comers, save one, if they would avenge my beloved Cards against the hated Braves. They did, and I not wanting to risk the wrath of the baseball gods, have worked to fulfill my pledge each year since. Even my closet is in harmony with both the STL and NYY road jerseys hanging side by side (the STL always closer to the front of the closet), the Wizard signed home jersey mounted in the office in direct line of sight from the front of the apartment.

Well, it's a good week already when George is "deeply disappointed". I cannot believe the Piniella thing is hitting the rumor mill, again. I suppose Billy Martin is out of the question.
"Rubenstein said Steinbrenner was not going to comment on a report in the New York Daily News that manager Joe Torre likely will be fired and replaced by Lou Piniella."

You obviously missed my point. Will I root for the Red Sox- no. Why should I? Do I HATE the Red Sox (like every channel and media would want you to believe)? No. Why should I?

My point, quite simply, as that I don't HATE other teams and other teams' fans- unlike how most people feel about the yanks.

And, as a matter of fact, when the Red Sox won the series 2 years back (after totally embarassing the yanks), I wanted them to win it. They thoroughly kicked our ass 4 games in a row- that right there proved to me that they deserved a title.

So there. I can roll my eyes too!

Thank you. You wouldn't have that if it wasn't for Chicago.

Well, I'm from Chicago, grew up on the south side for a few years and then moved to the north side, but I'm still a White Sox fan. I hate those damn Cubs. It makes me so mad that the White Sox weren't in it this year, but we still had a better year than the Cubs, so it makes it a little bit better.

It looks like the Dodgers are already starting to talk about next season. Ned Colletti is discussing the resigning of Gregg Maddux and possibly Kenny Lofton and Nomar Garciaparra. LA fans know this guy will work his tail off the team, which makes such a change from years past. This is very reassuring in the face of such a poor postseason performance. The McCort's checkbook will probably also open wider.

I'm going to make a bold and foolish prediction for the off-season: the Dodgers will at least try to trade for Alfonso Soriano. With Kent in his last season, he'd be better off at first with Loney as his backup. That leaves second open, Soriano's natural position. The Dodgers need a big gun. Soriano would fill that role nicely. Of course this would leave no place for Nomar, but he was never in the Dodger's long-range plans anyhow.

Yankee fans knew they deserved to win every year, even then. I haven't lived on the east coast for a long time, but this sense of entitlement seems to be one of baseball's constants. I guess we'd sort of miss it if it were gone.

I think this describes New York fans in general. I know Knick fans who think that, not only did the last Knick title happen yesterday, but that every champion since then has been illegitimate. Although now that the Knicks are pretty much rock bottom, they've become more of a despairing fan base, which is funny to watch.

I want Arod gone I want Sheffield gone and I want Torre gone by next season.

OK, I can understand you want heads to roll. But who out there will handle the pressure of the New York media, Steinbrenner, and knows baseball better than Torre? Before you boot him out, you have to have a decent replacement in mind, and there aren't many to choose from.

You don't need a team to root for in the playoffs. It's exciting just to see what will happen next.

Are you kidding? Almost every Met team of the last 15 years has underachieved because they've been too willing to spend money. People have been saying that Minaya is some kind of genius, but I think the big-spending free agent route was bound to pay off for them eventually after years of misfires.

I agree that they'll bid for him, but I'm ambivalent about getting him. Soriano is just entering his prime, and he proved he can mash the ball even in a pitcher's park like RFK. Except for the lack of plate discipline, there's not much to dislike about him. But how much would he cost? We've already got a lot invested in Furcal, Lowe, Drew, and Penny. Granted, there are quite a few young and cheap guys to balance things out, but I don't want to go back to the bad old days when they thought they were one big free agent away from title contention (e.g., Strawberry).

I would like to see them get a slugger, since it's safe to say that both Kent and Nomar won't be here long. I'd like to see them get another starter though. Assuming Penny gets well and Billingsley can continue his upward path, I think we need another starting pitcher. Zito has been rumored, but I don't know if he's as good as he used to be.
