I just can't believe that the yankees lost, best offense was blanked on the last two games by tigers pitching. I will admit that pitching by the Yankees was horrible (other than Wang) but i was really expecting them to go to the world series against the mets

I agree that they'll bid for him, but I'm ambivalent about getting him. Soriano is just entering his prime, and he proved he can mash the ball even in a pitcher's park like RFK. Except for the lack of plate discipline, there's not much to dislike about him. But how much would he cost? We've already got a lot invested in Furcal, Lowe, Drew, and Penny. Granted, there are quite a few young and cheap guys to balance things out, but I don't want to go back to the bad old days when they thought they were one big free agent away from title contention (e.g., Strawberry).

I would like to see them get a slugger, since it's safe to say that both Kent and Nomar won't be here long. I'd like to see them get another starter though. Assuming Penny gets well and Billingsley can continue his upward path, I think we need another starting pitcher. Zito has been rumored, but I don't know if he's as good as he used to be.

It wouldn't be a clubhouse move, that's for sure, but his numbers are undeniable. As much as I have my personal reservations about Soriano I can't help salivating at the potential of over 100 stolen bases at the top of the lineup. He's making $10 million in Washington. They might be willing to eat some of that salary in a trade. If any team needs a guy with Soriano's stats more than the Dodgers and have a better place to put him, and can also afford him, then I don't know that team. Speaking of which, I'm going to take another wild and foolish guess and predict a Dodger payroll in 2007 of $110 million. I think the McCorts got close enough to smell it this season so I have to believe they will ante up.

In terms of the rotation, I think they've got to give Kuo another shot. His remarkable performance in the second game against the Mets was somewhat overlooked. He might even work out better than Billingsley.

Soriano will be a free agent, so it wouldn't be a trade.

Ah, right -- I thought the Nats had him for another year. They do want him back though, so the bidding for his services will be fierce. He's apparently also grown comfortable with left field. Both developments are surprising given how he initially refused to play the position.

I think the tiff over him not wanting to play left field was overblown. He'd already received plenty of criticism about his defense at second base and he probably worried about how well he'd do at a new position. Considering how many other things the Nats' front office has done wrong, it looks like Soriano won that battle.

It's like playing a game of "Jeff Weaver: The Two Thrones." (Forgive the POP reference, I've been obsessed lately.) He'll seem good for a while and then the dark side of him will creep in and take over. Then in a later game he'll be fine. Except for one inning when he looked like a September callup from AA Jacksonville. Impossible to tell what he'll be like out there, even if he's pitched well the first few innings.
...
Weaver's scheduled to start Wed. evening vs. Mets. I'm hoping to see the "good" one for at least 5-6 innings.

Joe Torre is still manager of the Yankees for 2007

I'm a little surprised that Steinbrenner didn't fire him. Not that I think he should just that I thought he would be out of patience. Torre has a reputation as a player's coach, and I suspect that a lot of the players (maybe Jeter especially) wanted him to stay. Like I said the other day, there aren't many better replacements out there, and Torre already knows the system and is used to dealing with Steinbrenner.

One thing I think is overlooked is that the big payroll doesn't do much for the postseason. When the top teams play each other in short series, luck and random heroics can be the great equalizers. After having it on their side for five years, now they haven't had it for six. (Same thing with the A's recent teams, or the Red Sox' occasional Game 7 losses. It's mostly bad luck to come that close without winning the series.) That's why every team fixates on just making the playoffs and then hoping for the best.

Torre has said that he doesn't like the short best of 5 series. He would rather the division series be a best of 7.

Watching game 1 of the ALCS, can Zito work any quicker?

A Zito v Verlander game would be under 2 hours easy, wow!

MacNut:
I agree with Torre, they should be 7 game series, just ask the Twins. Glad your still watching, hope I didnt come off the wrong way before. I'm a Tiger fan (and a post season Yankee fan for the last 10 years) that doesn't know what to do with himself. Go Get'em Tigers.

It is looking like the Tigers are unstoppable. Unless they are going to fast and will come to a crashing stop.

How much of this is the Tigers being that good or is Leland just that great of a manager.

The Tigers are playing up to their ability, you can give Jim credit for that.

Too bad the Yankees did not get Lou, his broadcasting comments are crap.

It hurts me to say this, but I miss the geek Josh Lewin ... and Gibby

sorry mario and rob

and the gun is hot

I want to know why he lives in the Southeast and is a Yankee fan.

The bright idea for A-Rod was Steinbrenner, Wang didn't pitch game 4 according to Torre was that he was on 3 days rest and they didn't want to risk him, there are arguments that he should have but that is up for debate on what is the right answer there. Matsui and Sheff played because they are the big stars and he had to play them, granted Melky had a good season but Torre really had no choice there.

any other questions.

Also, the Yankees have a lack of pitching, you can have the best hitters in the league but the best pitchers will always kill great hitting, seeing as how the Tigers are playing Im not sure we ever would of beaten them.

Is there a town called "Central" in Connecticut?
No, is there a town called socal.:p

Central Connecticut is basically the Greater Hartford area.

No, but I didn't use a comma like it was a town either. I just figured, since you were fielding questions.
