in your opinion does letting the AW discharge completely works in order to get better battery management?

I don't really know to be honest. I did notice the past 3 nights it seemed to consume a little more battery each night. I'm wondering if it's really using the same amount of battery (since all my settings were the same), and it's just the battery meter.

When it's at 100%, it stays there for a while before dropping. I want to see if letting it run down makes a difference to the calibration.

just a doubt: can "quality" of sleep affect the battery consumption? i don't think it makes sense, but if you move a lot during night, or if you stay awake some time, does the sensors gyroscope etc. consume more battery?

i repeat, i don't think so, but just to be sure we are considering all the possible aspects.

I have not read all the posts, but I'm wondering if my watch is defective. I've had it about a month. Used a restore from my old watch (a 2) to set up and didn't add anything. I swim in the morning and ride my horse in the evening, but other than that, most days I use it as just a watch and to check text messages. Mine is a cellular model, which I got since I am on call for work a lot and it's easier to answer my watch than my phone from the saddle, but I have not had to use the phone feature for more than 5 minutes total since getting it.

My battery runs out completely between 5 and 7 pm most nights. I charge every night and get up at 445.

I'm going to delete a bunch of rarely-used apps and turn off most notifications and see if it improves, but I did not have this problem with the same set up on my last watch.

I was thinking the same exact thing after the second night. Maybe I was tossing and turning more. After the third night, it used a little more than the second night, so that's when I thought it might just be the meter.

It still is fine, and I'm not really worried because I feel like I'm getting more than enough battery life. I'm really just curious to see how it works.

I don't have a cellular model, but that sounds like too much battery consumption.

Maybe try to set it up as new.

If you have "Health" turned on in iCloud sync on your iPhone, all of your activity, health, and achievements are stored in the cloud. If you setup your watch as "new" you won't lose those.

Also, keep in mind that even if you have background app refresh turned off, any complications in the watch face will still refresh in the background.

That sounds like some crazy motivation for self-optimization :)

Are you using it LTE only (without phone) at any point?
Even without actually using the internet or phone features actively ...

Having LTE on without the phone (and poor LTE reception) causes major drain for me.
It barely lasts 3 hours in then.

Well, AutoSleep does have a little battery icon to show how much my sleep has recharged....

But seriously, I'm not concerned about excessive battery consumption, just curious now if the battery meter drops faster the further the watch is from 100%.

I would say that seems excessive to me based on my experience going from AW 2 to AW 4. I set mine up as new first, then unpaired and re-paired it from backup.

First thing I'd do is try restarting it. Not turning it off, then on again, but a restart. See if you get improvement with that. If not, then I'd unpair it, and pair it as new. If that doesn't improve your battery life then I'd contact Apple Support. Or you could just go that route right away.

I know I can’t say for certain, but my thought is if you put on theatre mode, it doesn’t matter how much you move, the watch is recording the same information.

If you don’t have theatre mode on or you tap the screen accidentally in your movement at night, then I’d say for sure how well you sleep will impact the batter life... otherwise, my prediction is it will make 0 difference.

I suppose you could test this if you have a couple hours to sit and do nothing and see if it drains faster than if you are up moving around ;)

Turning it OFF and ON is considered a restart. I suppose you meant a hard reset by holding the crown and the side button at the same time?

glad to read this. :)
could you please tell us what did you turn off, might someone else happen to face the same problem? thanks!
I've turned off Background App Refresh, removed some apps; Google News, Tube Map, and turned off some notifications. Also turned off Stand Reminders. Don't know if this'll work but I'm currently on 81% after 4 hours.

I also wonder if the activity app uses a lot of battery? Doesn't it detect which activity you are doing?

What I’m noticing is a battery drain is Podcast and Audible. It somehow consistently refreshes in the background. You have to force close the app when done to get it to stop loading. Otherwise it stays open in the background. Finally, if you have your watch connected to WiFi it will upload podcasts, music, and audible if you’ve selected updates, regardless of whether it is on the charger or not.

What do you do with your AWS4 by night? I don´t sleep with it, yesterday it was 100% when i went to bed and it was 86% when I woke up this morning. Is not too much? it was sitting in the night stand all the time.
It is my first wach so I don´t know what´s the normal in the battery life.
I imagine that you can put it to charge eveynight so when you wake up in the morning is 100%.

My watch battery life is meh but it’s whatever . I take it off the charger around 1 pm and by 11pm it’s around 50-65%. It’s probably because I’m moving my wrist around a lot and turns on the screen

Yes, it sounds like it depending on what applications you might have open that are refreshing in the background. I wear mine at night and use 5% to 10% over 7 to 8 hours of sleep tracking: Apple Watch Series 4 Sleep Tracking

If it was on the charger over night, It should be at 100%.

I've owned the Series 0, 2 and now 4. The battery life of each version just keeps getting better and better! I charge my Apple Watch every night. The Series 2 was generally around 40% when I went to bed but would be at 15% when I woke up. The Series 4 44mm is around 50% or sometimes more when I go to bed. Waking hours being 7AM - 11PM.

I decided since it was the weekend to test just how long I can go on a charge without power reserve or airplane mode.

7AM Saturday - 10:30PM Sunday

Really amazing.

tonight lost 16% in 8 hours. airplane mode, no complications on face, nothing in background, background refresh off.

generally speaking then, to summarise - Apple Watch battery still poor. thats a shame. I had a series 0, and so wanted this, but I need a watch that can last more than a shade over a day. I dont want to charge overnight, I want to measure my sleep, and I dont want to take off in the day (much if I can help it) - is there a rapid charge option?

I've been testing it for sleep tracking, and I get 3 days of battery between charge with maximum brightness and most features turned on.

Apple Watch Series 4 Sleep Tracking

By the way, it charges from 0% - 100% in 2 hours.

to me, based on my watch, this is a correct resume.

BUT for me is sufficient to charge it while having shower/dinner in the evening, and while in bathroom or having breakfast in the morning to have it at 100% when i leave home.

NOTE: i wear it all day and night for sleep monitoring

Unless you're going out on a hike without your iPhone for like 4 hours at a stretch, you should be good for an entire day/night. And if you charge the Watch during shower everyday, chances are slim to none that you'd run out of juice.
It should get you through a day and a half easy even with a workout session. But remember, taking calls on LTE on Apple Watch a lot without an iPhone nearby drains it in just hours.
