Mind installing the netstat app and checking for a socket called somethingsomething.push.apple.com that is most likely under cellular, might also be under wifi?:)
I downloaded the App but I'm lost on what to do?

Open the app, every five seconds it will update the info shown. If you've closed all other apps it should not show much but a few connetions can be expected now and then.

There are two sections named cellular and wifi. In each section a red/orange/green circle with some text next to it represents a socket for an app or the OS to communicate through with the world over, you guessed it, eithet the cellular(3g) or wifi network.

What some have noticed is that while other sockets come and go as you open/close apps one never goes away and actually prefers 3g over wifi leaving you with a constantly running 3g (even though not alot of data is sent/received).

This would be represented by a green circle with a name ending with push.apple.com.

If you can't find it just shut off all apps (double click the home button and hold on a app then press red circle to exit them), wait 30 sec, open netstat and then take a screenshot after 5-10 sec. Post it here and we can compare.

Now this push socket can come and go so if you see it most of the time make sure you get it on the screenshot. Press pause to stop the app from updating if needed:)

The battery problem is Software related and possibly also connected to backups according to this article http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/test-suggests-iphone-battery-issue-not-a-hardware-problem/16250

Says the guy brought 2 iPhone 4S's and installed 5.0.1 on 1 and that's which one had a battery prob.

Very interesting! Strange that turning off features or reseting/formating does not help all:-(

What makes things even stranger is some people experiencing better batt with 5.0.1 and others worse, some can reset to fix it, others cant.

I did this and it shows the same thing. I, too, wonder why my phone is using 3G to connect to Apple when I have a perfect WiFi connection. So, basically, our phones are constantly utilizing 3G? The only way to kill this is to shut-off Cellular Data. I would love to know if there is any difference in battery life with Cellular data shut on/off while connected to WiFi.

Took phone off charge at 8am this morning... 100%. Its on 40% auto brightness, everything on, email set to manual. Sent a few texts, a bit of Facebook and twitter on 3G and GPRS... one phone call... and its now 10:23am and i'm down to 86%. That's not normal is it?

The usage stats are:

Usage: 52 Minutes
Standby: 2 Hours, 36 Minutes.

thats about what I've gotten over the past week. Except i dont have wifi or bluetooth turned on, i dont use twitter, I'vee sent about 20-30 texts by noon and i have around 80%

These numbers still aren't up to apple's advertising..

Spoke with the Apple tech I have been dealing with. He asked me to restore as a new phone and see what happens overnight. He asked that when I restore it to not install any apps. So basically the only thing on my phone is 3 of my ringtones and my music, no apps. He wants me to email him in the morning to see where I am at. Guess some form of closure is in my future.

That seems to be a recent suggestion from them, though it has been suggested here with hit-or-miss responses. Interesting about the Apps though, I wish the best for you.

I can't say my usage has been the greatest, but oh well, for now I get through the day easily.

Since 5.0.1 I have been consistently getting around 6 hours of usage (give or take) and 24 hour standby (give or take). One can be larger depending on my usage of the phone.

I don't know if this is a good battery or not, but I'm happy with what I'm getting. I have also not cycled my battery.

I have turned off all push notifications in mail/calendar/contacts, siri off, imessage off, ping off most location services off, hardly any notifications, no reminders, signed out of store and still cannot get rid of the push socket that have been mentioned here before.

It is frozen as suggested before, always using cellular even when wifi is on. Also had a socket frozen on wifi even after leaving the house to a site owned by akamai technologies.

Any tips on what I can try to turn off to get rid of the bz.push.apple socket is much appreciated.

On another note, this is my second phone and is just as bad as the one I sent back. Is it worth sending this one back too or is there no chance of it getting fixed?

It's been proven to be software. You'll want to perform a Setup as New.

How are all of you showing those stats for usage and standby times? My phone just has dashes, screenshot attached. I've recalibrated the battery many times by running the phone down and then recharging to 100%, I think this started with the 5.0 update, and carries over with the 5.0.1, and of course along with the battery issues (again)

another great day of use on 5.0.1

charged to 100% last night, removed from charger at 5am. it's now 12:44am and I'm at just about 4hrs real world work day use and 18.5hrs standby with 51% remaining.

Got about 3 hours, 45 mins of usage (a lot was games and video recording) and like 6 and a half hours of standby. Pretty happy with those results for my first day out with my iPhone, especially considering how it needs to search for cell service often in my school.

I hit Reset all settings last night. So not a full reset. Approx 4% drain over 8hrs give or take. So just about matches apples figures of 200 standbys. Was draining 1% an hr now 0.5

Yeah, read the article basicly proving it is a software problem but I have set up as new phone atleast 3 times and even without installing squat it gives me same batt life:-(

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, and I am ofcourse not sure that this might be a problem, but both me and my wifes iPhone 4S is taking longer than usual to find the carrier network when for example the device is rebooted. On our iPhone 4, it would find the carrier straight away. We both have the find carrier setting to automatic.

Could it be, that the firmware has a baseband bug or whatever? And that this might drain the battery?

I don't have any proof of this, but with 2 antennas now, and with 3G being able to autoswitch antenna etc., plus the fact that our phones now finds the carrier network slower than usual on an iPhone 4, I kinda suspect the baseband software to be buggy. Again, I can't know this for sure, just what I observed.

Had the phone on charge overnight. Pulled it off the charger. I use battery doctor and it had a congrats, full charge message. I look and the battery is at 92% and battery doctor says 89%. This is with the new patch installed. It previously would not do this. Wtf?

Well, woke up this morning with a completely dead phone from full charge. Already sent an email off to the Apple tech letting him know. When I went to check usage I got just over 9 hours. At this point I am going to demand a new exchange.

if its software related a new exchange won't fix it.

drained yest and full charged.....

played an bit of scrabble for 5 and a text here or there. apparently 56mins of usage and already at 86% lol

wheres this netstat utility?

Made another genius bar appointment for today. After having the phone for 2 weeks I brought it in because of how poor the battery was (dropping 1%/minute on calls, etc) and the phone would get extremely hot. They exchanged it and unfortunately the new phone was getting poorer battery performance (almost draining twice as fast as the first one). I waited on 5.0.1 though, which actually seemed to further affect the performance, so I tried a full restore ... I have no idea how, but this made the battery drain faster as well. I'm sure it's part of the stellar luck that I have, but I'm not sure how each fix I try has actually made the battery worse.

I have one email set to push (which sometimes pushes and sometimes I have to manually fetch), and all wifi/bluetooth/location services turned off.

Please Help

I've installed the 5.01 software and if anything my phone is worth

I am not a previous Iphone own so have nothing to compare to but i struggle to get through a whole day without charging

Also, my Usage shows all Usage and Standby show as exactly the same which seems incorrect!!

Shall i take it back? Will it get replaced? Is it worth Retoring the phone to see if that'll fix it?

Well at this point it is worth a try. I shouldn't have a phone going from 100% to dead in just over 8-9 hours overnight. The Apple tech called me and already had an appointment set up for replacement even before I could ask for it.

I noticed the same thing. I charge my phone turned off. Charge your phone without turning it off and then your usage will appear. :)

Last night, I downloaded an app and it wreaked havoc on my battery.

My battery has been just ok...not seeing the serious issues others are. But after installing Picture Safe (HiDef) v2.8, my battery drained 50% overnight (7 hours). I thought WTF, closed all running apps, and threw it on the charger.

A few hours later, I noticed it wasn't charging...in fact it was still draining but at a slower rate...while on the charger! I rebooted, but no difference. I reset with power/home button, but no difference.

I then remembered the Picture Safe app I had installed. I uninstalled it and rebooted again for good measure. Charging resumed normally and later, off the charger, battery drain seems back to normal. WTF!!!
