I seem to have figured our what's causing my phantom usage... having songs on my iPhone!?

I tested it and it had great battery life until I put my music on my phone...

But why!?

Is your other growing in iTunes? Mine is. I wondered if that could be causing some people's problems.

I do all the normal stuff. Calls, email, twitter, Facebook, instagram, record videos, web browse, text, etc. On this particular usage I didn't play any games..which may be why it is better than usual. I usually get 1.5 day standby with 7 hours usage. The extra standby this time maybe because I didn't play games. When I do it's normally things like bowman, flight control, flick field goal to name a few.

And I never use airplane mode.

Two days of standby is amazing yeah. What do you have turned off in settings?

The battery on my 4s is alright. I guess the battery on the 4 was better but in no means is it awful for me at least. I get through about a day of regular usage which is pretty good for me!

I noticed that on restoring my iPad, my other category went down to less than half of what it was, so I got curious and tried it on my iPhone, same thing for it. A restore, then reinstall from backup and it really shrunk.

Currently at 27 hours standby and 2 hours use and I have 66%, still not sure if that's okay. This is on my 2nd full charge.

The only things off are the system services time zone, location based iAds, traffic, and Diagnostics & Usage. Everything with iCloud is on, all installed apps have push set to on, location access is granted to every app that asks for it. I literally use everything iPhone has to offer. :D

I KNOW THIS SOUNDS CRAZY...

...but I think I fixed my phone's battery 'problem' by using a different mail application.

I have the 4S and also came from a 4. I noticed worse battery life, but nothing CRAZY. It wouldn't drain in an hour or anything, or 10% an hour in standby, etc. But it was bad, worse than the 4 for sure. Some days at the end of a work day I wouldn't make it home before it died, whereas on my 4 I could usually go a day and a half of work. But anyway, I just accepted it since Apple said the standby time was worse, so whatever.

But today I downloaded the official Google Gmail app from the app store and deleted my account from the stock mail app on my iPhone.

It was set to fetch at 1 hour intervals and push was OFF.

This Gmail app is set with push on so it badges the app icon and makes a sound every time.

Today I went all through work with Spotify playing, did some texting during lunch like always, web browsing, music on the way back home in my aux port of my car (not charging)...and then went to sleep and left it in standby for quite a bit too and as of right now I still have 61% left. That'd absolutely never happen before.

Only setting I can think of that I've changed since my last charge is the mail app. Deleted my account and set it to stop fetching. Hmm.

Hey everyone,

Build 9A406 miraculously fixed my phantom usage! I have no idea why but I'm glad it's finally resolved.

For those having phantom usage issues I highly recommend updating now! :):)

Just checked mine and it's gone down from 1.71 to 1.58gb. I deleted some iMessages that's all. But atleast I know it can go down. Everything I read suggested it never would and would need as you say a reset/restore. Guess I may do it as I also read it should be peanuts in size.

Edit - restored. Now reads 0.42gb and software is the latest. I wasn't rushin to upgrade as I had no sim problems. Guess now I see if It improves battery life.

Edit 2 - my mistake. Other now reads after syncing 0.52Gb

Interesting. My brand new 4s using 9A405 after it's first full charge went from full to 93% with 40ish min use and 3.5 hrs standby. After updating, letting it charge, unplugging it and going to bed I got that. (Worth noting that when I just woke up I had 4 hrs stdby and 9-10 min use and it still showed 100%).

Definitely worth looking into.

EDIT: Now I'm at 94% with 35 min usage and 5hrs 22min stdby, is it draining too fast? I'll see how long it lasts

One of the workarounds.

I recently updated my website with my last found workaround for the WiFi sync iPhone 4S drainage bug.

In short : my router was messing things up when my iMac wants to communicate using wifi with my 4S -> I deleted the DNS entry in the phone my router pushed in and entered something else ( For instance the google public DNS 8.8.8.8 ). Somehow that fixes the constant syncing between my iMac and the 4S. It would also stop if I would disconnect my iMac OR I would disconnect the internet from my home wifi network. Also switching routers stopped the drainage.

There are still users getting excessive drainage without using wifi sync. Some of them don't have the drainage anymore if they deselect 3G data from their phone. That might be something you also could try.

I did not try the latest 5.0.1 yet.

Regards.

so what you're saying is you practically dont touch your phone for two days to say "hey, it's still got good battery life"?

That's.. great.

No I said 27 hours standby time, that's a little over a day, not two and I actually just only probably use it a few hours in a 24 hour period. When I'm working I'm never on it (work at a restaurant), and when I'm home I usually use my laptop. I practically only have used it for calls, texts (like any phone) and will occasionally check facebook when im out, and use Siri for little things.

I plan on doing a heavy use day on my next day off (which is tomorrow Christmas, yay) to give it the full test.

I made one observation though that I thought you guys might be interested in.

After updating to 9A406, the phantom usage was gone (usage and standby times were reflected accurately according to my ACTUAL usage).

However, I turned on automatic downloads for apps and the phantom usage came back on. Turning it off and doing a hard reset stopped it so now my phone is fine again.

Yeah, so it probably has something to do with the auto download for apps option.

With over thirty two hundred posts in this thread,

And over two hundred fifty five thousand page views.

I'd say Apple is slipping in a big way.

As if last years Antennagate failure wasn't enough, the major issues are now becoming an annual tradition.

Apple, it just wor - oh nevermind :D

This is the third time I've posted in this thread. I'm totally happy with my battery life...don't know what people are complaining about.

Maybe this:

Just because you don't have an issue doesn't mean that others also don't.

Yea covered that in a subsequent post.

Wow, is that your life? That's pretty bad!! You haven't returned it/tried to return?

Ya, that one went back a couple of days after that screenshot. I've been on vacation with the new one, and have had to keep it plugged in more often than not as I'm using it for tethering... But from what I've seen so far, the new one looks to be about as bad as the first one.

I'll know for sure once I get back home and get a few normal days under the belt. I've owned every generation of the iPhone, and this one has had the worst battery life BY FAR.

I would just chalk it up to ios 5, but I used my iPhone 4 with ios 5 for the first month and a half before upgrading, and the battery life on it was just fine, no noticeable difference between ios 4 and ios 5. I would average 2-3 days on a charge with an almost year and a half old iPhone 4 running ios 5. Since upgrading, I can't even make it through a day. Same usage, same cell signal, same location features, etc.

Something is definitely up with the iPhone 4s and battery life, at least for me.

The good news is we know for sure, iPhone 4S will be replaced with a new model at some point. Perhaps by then Apple will sell us a phone where everything works as advertised.

If that happens it will REALLY sell !!!

If not it will still REALLY sell LOL :)

Apple can sell anything.

Everything does work as advertised. My battery life seems average, no where near as bad as some are reporting, quality control must be the issue here. Some are getting great life on their 4S, some aren't. Unless it is indeed just a software issue or an issue designated to certain phones aka "duds", just like cars can be lemons.

And how much will your 4s be worth? Who's gonna buy it?

Updated to 9A406 yesterday as said previous. Reset/restore to shrink my Other in iTunes as it was at 1.7gb

Can report battery life exactly the same.

Just connected to iTunes. Other is now 70gb. Up from yesterday. And after transferring music it's at 80gb. Missing album art? Maybe I need to shrink the pictures

Somehow my battery is better. I used to lose 30-40% in 8 hours of standby, now I loose 6%. I didn't change any of its settings. That happened after ~20 cycles.

I'm getting sick of the 4S to the point that if 5.1 doesn't fix the issues I'm done with apple.

I'm on my 2nd replacement, setup each as a new phone which in itself is a royal pain for what you lose, and still having these issues
  • Hard reset 4 times a day cos it loses wifi and hangs settings app
  • No email without loading mail app (ie push barely working)
  • Apple default apps crashing often
  • Springboard crashing repeatedly
  • God awful battery life
  • phone getting uncomfortably hot with use
  • phone losing up to 5% charge the minute it's off charge despite 'calibrating'

Apple is getting overly sloppy and I'm not giving them more of my money without a marked change in quality
