Hey everyone, I'm a little confused here so would appreciate it if you guys could help me out.

As I've mentioned above, nothing has worked for me (I get a lot of phantom usage, refer to the posts above).

However, I realized that turning on airplane mode completely resolved the issue, i.e. no more phantom usage.

Now, I've tried turning off cellular data, wifi, location services, and bluetooth off one by one, but none of these resolved the issue.

From what I understand, airplane mode disables these 4 services along with phone calls and messages. So isn't having all of the 4 services off equal to having airplane mode less the calls/messages? Then why is that airplane mode stops the issues but turning those services off doesn't?

I have iMessage off btw.

My first "defective" phone worked for a day or so without any phantom usage increases when I turned off all Notifications. But the problem came back and I couldn't do any to resolve the phantom usage issue from that point on until I got a replacement phone.

When you toggle the Airplane mode, I am sure your phone reinitialized hardware components and it might have cleared the abnormal interaction between the firmware and hardware.

If your phone continues to work, that is great. If your phone is indeed "defective", the problem will come back. When it does come back, you know what to do...

The new version of 5.0.1 (9A406) that came out yesterday seems to have done the trick for me. Maybe it's too early to tell for sure but at least I don't seem to have any phantom usage anymore.

Anyone can do that by turning it on airplane
mode for two and half days then using it. Or switching it to airplane mode over night all the time. In which case you should buy an iPod.

Unless your saying everyone's battery should be the same as yours, in which case I guess apple will do a recall

I have never turned airplane mode on. Everything is on except iAids, Time Zone under locations and Ping is off also.

In that case my phone is broken.

It is well beyond good, it is not normal. Three days of standby in the best of circumstances would drain your battery by 35-40% by itself. Getting 8 hours of usage out of the remaining 60% would mean you could get 13 hours of usage in a single day. So we have to assume most of your usage is listening to music, or else you got a magic phone that defys the laws of physics.

People go through hoops to lie on the Internet about battery life now? This whole thread has just gotten out of control.

In fact I listened to music, but this wasn't my whole usage. I also did a lot of i-net surfing and making several phone calls per day.
I am not on age I would allow myself to lie, so if you think I am dishonest with you or don't believe me- this is entirely your problem. I am showing a screenshot and that is all. Everybody have the right to do it, why I would be an exception?

My battery was fine in the beginning, it fluctuates for some reason. One day a charge lasted me 3 days with the same amount of use. But it doesn't do that anymore. Is mine draining too fast by the looks of it?

You're good... you've been using the phone non-stop since it's been off the charger so having that much juice left is pretty good. Me on the other hand unplugged my phone today at 1 after just bumping it to 100 cause I knew I was gonna be out all day and at 1% I had about 4 hrs of usage and less than 10 hrs of standby. I'm beginning to think I have a defective physical battery...

what? thats great. I don't get 3 hours usage til i have about 50-55% left. and i normally get a good 6 hours to 6 hours 30 minutes usage and 1 day to 1 day and 8 hours standby.

I agree, it's unfortunate that so many are having issues, a premium product like this shouldn't need troublshooting right out of the box.

That said, when Apple added the multitasking APIs in iOS 4, it became possible for apps to misbehave in the background, so it is at least worth investigating if certain apps using GPS or push notifications are causing problems.

I absolutely agree. Skype absolutely annihilates my battery if I don't go into settings and turn background down to 15 minutes. Apple needs to be definitively killing background apps in 15 minutes, we should never have to restart our device.

What is your 3G signal strength like at home? I have seen as much as 5% drain/hour in very poor/fringe service areas - the phone is working very hard to actively maintain a connection. My 3-4% overnight drain is with the phone connected to my local WiFi network. Of course if you don't have WiFi you should turn it off but WiFi certainly uses less power than 3G for actual data. Have you tried airplane mode overnight, just to see?

If you did a restore as new with the latest software and you're still losing that much battery at night with a decent signal then it's time to call Apple.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526981?start=0&tstart=0

Talk time: Up to 8 hours (12.5% per hour drain) on 3G, up to 14 hours (7.1% per hour drain) on 2G (GSM)
Standby time: Up to 200 hours (0.5% per hour drain)
Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G (16.6% per hour drain), up to 9 hours (11.1% per hour drain) on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 10 hours (10% per hour drain)
Audio playback: Up to 40 hours (2.5% per hour drain)
So a scenario of normal usage could be for example: 4 heavy hours of 3G internet browsing (66.4%), with one hour of call on 3G (12.5%) and 22 hours of standby (11%) = 100%

A battery life issue is a problem where the drain is really out of spec either during usage or standby or both. For example, multi-% per minute drain during usage or a 10% drain per hour during standby is problematic. Browsing the internet on 3G during one hour and losing 16-17% is not.

I was paranoid about upgrading to 5.0.1 because I was averaging ~6.5hrs usage and 1day of standby and happy with my battery life..

I upgraded last week (mostly to get rid of that stupid red notification on my settings button), and now I'm consistently averaging 1.5hrs less usage and 6 less hours of standby.. I waited for 2 full weeks of regular usage to ensure I was getting consistent results. Thats will draining/fully charging the battery several times to "calibrate"..

Not as bad as those with real issues, but it does suck that 5.0.1 took that much away

The New IOS 5.0.1 has improved my battery.

right now i am at 40% with 5hours usage and 23 hours standby.

Here's mine. This is the second charge on the 4s battery. Pretty good in my opinion. Sent a lot of texts, used the gps for about 20 min, listened to music for an 1 1/2 hours. The rest is 3g browsing.

Stupid score center popping up in the middle of my screenshot. Its at 1%

Why is that dropdown notification not properly aligned to the top of the screen? There is a black space above the notification. The screenshot doesn't look genuine.
