Had to do a restore for issues I was having with iMessage and I set up as a new phone. I now have iOS 9A406, not that it probably makes a difference, but I'm curious to see if battery life will be the exact same. Getting a full charge now.

And I dont know if this legit info (maybe not) but I googled ways to improve 4S battery and someone said turning off "raise and speak" to Siri helped there life, I dunno I dont use raise and speak to Siri so I turned it off. ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT2SSOgQ0Pc&feature=related

Also another one I found from searching was to go to settings ---> general ---> date & time and switch off the "set automatically", it's been found to increase life.

Hey everyone,

Build 9A406 miraculously fixed my phantom usage! I have no idea why but I'm glad it's finally resolved.

For those having phantom usage issues I highly recommend updating now! :):)

Just how did you update??
when i go into settings and open the software update, it says that my current ver 5.0.1 is the latest already and nothing else..please share.

Because both 9A405 and 9A406 are iOS 5.0.1 so the only way you can update to the newest one is to restore or download the .ipsw and shift+restore using iTunes.

I downloaded the ipsw and updated from there. Option+check for update.

Didn't do a restore.

I just had to correct you... Lithium Ion batteries don't have memory, so no, they don't need to be charged and discharged to reach maximum performance.

Yes they do. Old style nicd batteries would form crystals inside that prevented a full charge, thus making you think they build a memory. When its just they didn't get a full charge.
Lithium's don't do this, but they do indeed need some full cycles. It conditions the battery and helps the device calibrate and recognize where battery levels are. It can take 5 -10 full charge and discharge cycles to do this but it definitely helps it reach its peak.

When I get a new battery or new device I discharge from where ever it is currently, down to 1%. Shut it off, charge full 100% and lather rinse repeat this at least 5 times. I always notice difference in its ability to be used without discharge as quick.

Also, Apple wouldn't recommend this if it weren't so. If they really felt it had no benefit, they'd for sure use that as marketing......but they plain as day have it on their website.

Now, once cycled, you can charge them at anytime without fear, they wont build crystals that prevent full charges. But its still good maintenance to cycle one a month.

For what its worth, I have a 4s and I think the battery is great. It beats the brakes off my Android Galaxy s.

I only loose 1-2% at idle while sleeping with wifi on. And during the day, its good while messing with it. I just went on charge and looked at my usage, it was in standby since last charge over 32hrs and call usage was almost 5hrs. It doesn't include all the Christmas video and pics shot with it. And its only had 2 or 3 cycles. BTW, my phone was set up new.....I think it matters.

Did notice poorer battery life compared to my 3GS. I'll live with it, but I hope they get around to fixing it. Not really sure what they were doing for 14 months making the 4S. Camera isn't very good (imo), speed boost is negligible (not complaining though), and battery life is horrible. Did they even bother testing the battery or something?

And where the hell is my disable 3G toggle? At least they could have given us this.

Still like my 4S, but this is annoying.

I've used my iPhone only on a 3G connection, used it for browsing, whatsapp, texting and calls.

What do you guys think, i would say it's good. Would had been 6-7 hours on Wifi. Almost 5 hours on 3g with two days of standby.

It's not wonderful, but it's normal. I'm hoping Apple fixes the crappy battery problem in iOS 5.1

33% left and I have 2hrs 49mins usage and 7 hours standby that's rubbish right? I received it yesterday for Christmas so is there anything I can try that has worked for previous people in this thread?

Thanks

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A406 Safari/7534.48.3)

I think my battery is getting better as I do more discharge/charges. I think it conditions it and calibrates it. Battery seems to be holding stronger.

Wait at least a week. My battery got better as well.

iPhone 4 is almost the same

Amazing. My iPhone 4 also depletes 20% just on standby overnight. I actually liked iOS 4, and it's battery life was so good. I wonder how :apple: got those details about that iPhone 4S having a longer talk time that iPhone 4. Either they tested that with iOS 4, or beta iOS 5. My battery life on my iPhone 4 seriously suck as well!

Does it?

I thought these problems relate just to 4S.

That's not right.. It shouldn't deplete more than say 5% every 10hours in standby.

I just got the battery gate issue the other day after enabling personal hotspot feature on my 4S yesterday, never have i had such a bad battery life.. Now it seems to be like yours, depleting by a lot over night, which is wrong. When you check the usage the usage time is so high that it's ridiculous, something is being used, which is wrong..

Well, my 4S doesn't count to usage time over night, but the battery is still bad.

My battery cratered for a few days. Took a lot of work but figured out it was a corrupt email that yahoo was choking on and would get stuck checking mail and the battery died in four hours three times in a row. Once the email was deleted. I problems. Point is don't forget the obvious when condemning very off battery life.

Went to bed at 80%. 1h 45m useage, 1h 15 standby. Woke up to 20% battery life, 6h 16min useage 10h 13m standby.. I only slept ~8 hrs. Something definitely messed up. This is the first night this has happend to me. My battery life was great on 5.0, finally decided to take a chance and update to 5.0.1 a few weeks back, and I lost ~1.5h off my normal useage, not I mention that there hasn't even been that much time since I went to sleep lol (3:30am-11:30). Now this. I know no one else was using my phone b/c I was the only one in the house last night lol

Guess I need to restore or something? Only things running were safari, messages, and phone app.
