times are all over the board

It seems the usage and the standby times reported here are all over the board...
Is there someone out there that can give some guidance on what UNDER NORMAL USAGES the times would be acceptable.

as i have said the usage time rance from 24 hours to 3 hours...

Sorry, but those numbers are impossible without an additional charge of the battery.

thank you at least i feel a little better about my times. i also believe these post that are saying they are getting 1 day and 1 day on standby are a little bogus as well...

From my experience and most people here and at large it seems 5 and a half to 7 hours usage is the range. To me that is not enough to get through the day I need 8.

I have most things turned off and I get 6:30 almost every day. My four got 8 plus easy!!!

Hi,
I suffer from sucky horrid battery issues I hate it so much almost feel like using my 4 again. I bought the 4s 32gb white iPhone. Ore order received on launch day. Since first day of ownership no charge over 8 hrs with normal use. I think thats crazy I rarely call people. Maybe send 100-150 txt a day. And email light web surfing. I feel like selling my 4s and waiting for next iPhone right now. Also never use wifi

This WILL be fixed since it's a software issue. I think what's happening is that something is causing an errant process to run in the background (which might be the time zone setting for some people). I have had 2 episodes of extreme battery drain, but otherwise have been pleased with the battery life (it's MUCH better than my Nexus One).

The first happened on the second night I had it when it lost half its charge. I don't know what happened, but after that, I did a reset, and it was fine for the next 10 days. Today, I had an episode over lunch where it had difficulty picking up a data signal, and the e-mail fetch drained about 10% in an hour. I did another reset, and so far, so good. I left the office at 8:00 with it fully charged, did about 10 minutes of reading on iBooks on the subway ride home, checked my messages, and 2.5 hours later it's at 99%. That's what I've been getting most of the time.

Note that at home, I do use wi-fi, so that might actually help since I have a strong wi-fi connection (and thus it avoids pinging AT&T too often).

What this tells me, anecdotally, is that the issue is real, but that the fix ought to be fairly straightforward.

From a full charge to 75% with just 59 minutes of use. I just had two short phone calls ( < 1 minute) and received some text messages. I can't remember doing much more than that and lost 25%

First day: Battery life indicator at 5% after 9 hours (at 5pm)

Day 2: Turned off Compass in location services, drained battery to dead phone and recharged fully overnight. 40% remaining life at the end of 14 hour day (10pm)

Day 3: same

This is with light usage, no videos or music, talk time of about 1 hour.

I don't know if this has been brought up, but the anandtech review explained hte battery situation pretty well.

1. The iPhone 4S uses less power than the 4 for making calls and when in a low signal area.

2. The 4S uses a LOT more power when playing games

3. The 4S uses a BIT more power for most things, but hte difference isn't really noticeable.

So, basically, the deal is,

1. iOS 5 probably has some issues and bugs that mess up standby time.
2. Use time is going to be about the same as the iPhone 4 unless you play games a lot.

This. My guess is that the beta testing was so focused on the features that something slipped through the cracks. Note that people are also reporting issues with reduced battery life on iPhone 4 models with iOS 5, so this doesn't appear to be an "iPhone 4S" issue so much as an iOS 5 issue. The good news is that this means the fix will be a software patch pushed out to us once it's ready.

Your own anecdotal experience may not mirror the experiences of the other millions of iPhone 4S users...just a thought.

Perhaps many millions more are finding their 4Ss work just fine, and are therefore unlikely to be posting here about it. "Just a thought."

A tale of two phones

Before I return my old iPhone 4S I took a final screen shot of my old one and the new replacement 4S.

Both phones set up exactly the same from exactly the same back up.

Old one is no sim.

WiFi is on

Bluetooth is off

Location services off

Hotmail on exchange set to manual

Auto time zone disabled

Ping off

3G on

iCloud never set up

Photo stream never set up

iTunes wifi Sync never set up and is off on the computer

So after looking at a few posts, I'm pretty concerned. Two days ago, the battery life was great. I got about 4 straight hours of use on a train switching between wifi and 3G, but the last few days my battery life has been very poor. I got about 3 hours of usage, with extremely fast dropping on standby. Today started off a lot better after a full restore, but it dropped significantly faster after 75% for some reason. Now its reading 7% with 3 hours and 45 minutes of usage and 11 hours and 35 minutes of standby.

What applications have you been using? Some drain the battery faster than others.

For example: I could show you an appalling screenshot of Usage - 2 hours usage, 2 hours stand by with battery at 10%. How? By playing Galaxy One Fire HD.

Brand new 4 restored from a backup of an old iPhone 2G here..
Installed iOS5 immediately as it came with iOS4 and been using it with pretty much everything on (iCloud, Push, Notifications, Find my Friends, etc...)

I have also noticed battery drains as described here. Last night it went down from 66% to 45% with no use.

Also, the other day when I was practicing bass I noticed constant cellular interference in my amp so I figured it came from my phone (I don't even know why it was pinging the baseband since I have wifi at home).

Anyway it got me thinking, so I deactivated 3G/EDGE this morning and things have been going pretty well so far (no % changes in the past hour).

EDIT: ok battery is draining anyway (it was stucked at 41% but went down to 32% in like a minute)

If it helps, I have major problems with my Battery... I did a software restore in iTunes, and now my iPhone is much much better. I mean it would be nice if it lasted as long as my 3G i just replaced... but meh

.

Oh yes, batterygate is real. I thought this was settled weeks ago? Goes to show you what happens when you tune out for a while :)

There's a rogue background process going on. My original 4S had it, my wife's didn't. Exhausted every possible setting, configuration, etc. I lost 6-8% on standby and the phone constantly ran in use without ANY apps or e-mail accounts, very similar to this:

https://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/2...one-4s-owners-to-address-battery-life-issues/

I even set up a test with my wife's 4S (no battery issue) and mine. Was able to replicate. Got a replacement, and it works as expected.

So yes, Batterygate is real for some users, and no combination of settings/time zones/whatever other band aid fix you can throw out there will stop it.

----------

I replicated it for the Apple Store genius by showing him a standby drain with most stuff off, and they replaced it with little hassle.

How much usage do you get out of your replacement?

Restore as new made a world of difference. Fetching instead of push also helped.
9% battery remaining: 7 hours usage. Games, web, video, taking pictures, texts and some navigation.
1 day of standby.

I just did a restore and setup as new... didn't help at all. I have played with all the other settings, turning things on and off, etc. That barely helped at all.

When is Apple going to address this? After the 30 day return period? WTH

A thought, but not a very good one.

What you said is possible, but that doesn't invalidate the experiences that I and others on this board are having.

Battery

My fist 4s was terrible. This one is not so bad.

I feel like my battery life hasn't been all that great. how does this compare to findings that others have had?
