Trying to install 5.0.1 to check if it fixes my 4s' battery problems but can't seem to get it to install even though I have the device registred as a developer device. Keeps saying the device is not listed:(

Server issue at apple. I was just looking at the dev forums. Many people having problem. Fortunately it worked for me. About to undergo some testing but will obviously take some time.

Thanks for getting back to me about that, been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is causing it:)

This news about a fix being in the works is good. Mine today, not anywhere near as good as the past 2 weeks:s just texting, twitter, email and occasional use of camera(for about 6mins)!

By the way for those having trouble installing 5.0.1 beta the trick is to alt-click update instead of restore and then pointing to the .ipsw file:)

Not that this means ANYTHING but for those of you waiting...

So far, the only change i made from my previous settings was to turn set Time zone back on (it was off) under location services.

Previously, listening to Podcaster podcast and web browsing/twittering on wifi after 10 mins of straight usage:

Prev: 2% loss
Now: 0% loss

Keep you all posted. Trying to simulate my daily usage as best I can.

the battery drainage issue is definitely not due to iOS 5.0. I backed up my 4S and restored it to an iphone 4. I kept all settings on (all location services, icloud etc.). With almost identical style of usage, my iphone 4 would drain down to 70% with 2.5 hours of usage. On my 4S, my battery would go just about or even lower than 50% with the same 2.5 hours of usage. This clearly shows that all these battery tests by cnet and other review sources are completely inaccurate and that the "batterygate" issue is clearly hardware-related which means that we wont see a fix until the iphone 5 comes out unfortunately

So very wrong. Why spread this filth at all?

Thats incredibly inaccurate. Software is not completely abstracted from hardware and this is very basic. A simple example. The OS on the iPhone 4 would not be calling to the dual antenna system since the i4 doesn't have one but it does on the i4s. If there was a bug in how the software and hardware that changed the antennas worked, and drained battery, it would not present on the i4. There are countless other examples of this. Your test unfortunately, proves nothing unless you knew exactly what the battery bugs were and then understood whether the interplay between the hardware and software made it a fixable issue in the OS

That is true however its safe to say that "location services", icloud, ping etc. are not the root of the problem. Turning those features off does not solve the problem. My iphone 4 with all those features turned off has much better battery life than the 4S even with everything on.

This is what i got today (not using iOS 5.0.1) despite heavy messaging (using Siri no less), plus mild browsing over 3G and WiFi. Then again i didn't game today...

Usage pattern;

-Wi-Fi On...mostly (ask to join off)
-BT Off
-Notifications On (excl some games)
-Location Services On (excl iAds, Time Zone & Diagnostics)
-40% Brightness
-Around 3hrs of music
-Apps
-Exchange Contacts and Calendar
-Fetch 2 Mail accounts hourly
-Siri on (raise to speak off)
-iCloud on (excl Contacts, Calendar and Photostream)

5.0.1 is much better than 5.0 for battery I've found already. Installed about an hour ago. Dropped 1% after 11mins (went to app store while playing a radio app in the background and turned on a few settings), would of lost maybe 3/4% on 5.0.

Only issue was I restarted my iPhone 4 when it got to 99% while the phone was plugged into the USB, when it booted back up, I had dropped down to 97% so not sure why it used so much power to reboot.

Just did a 2nd test, left the phone on the table for 12mins with no battery loss, remained at 100%. No apps running. Then I turned my online radio app on and left it for 8mins and dropped 3% so it's hit and miss.

It feels like 5.0.1 is improved, it definitely feels like it's lasting longer but I don't know, it also feels like the battery drain problem is there. On iOS4 i could of kept the radio app on for about an hour before losing 3% so 8mins isn't that good

Turned off the setting time zone thing, wifi sync, ping.

Using iCloud with everything except photostream and documents on, 2 exchange emails (have had about 20 emails pushed since I charged the phone), location services for numerous things.
Been doing some wifi browsing, emails, some siri requests - battery life seems pretty good now.

Continued update:

Not going to go through all my settings. Safe to say i don't keep my phone in battery conserve mode. Most notifications active on lock screen as well. 4 push email accounts.

Actions
Played an entire 70 minute podcast on Podcaster
Browsed web on Wifi for ~15 mins
Checked twitter, Facebook, Reader (RSS app), a bunch of replies (~15 mins) on wifi
Did the exact same above on 3G (~10 mins)
A couple map searches over Wifi
Used FmF a couple of times
Sent 10-12 emails a bunch of texts.
10 minute phone call
Random looking through other apps, general playing around

1 hour 34 mins Usage
1 hour 52 mins standby
1Mb received
2MB sent

At 85% capacity.

Now exclusively leaving it on 3G for awhile. But safe to say this is much better for me than before.

Better be sooner than a few weeks. This thing will be handed back to apple in 2 weeks if it keeps up like this.

i swear some of you must never be around a plug. Give me a break.

Plug the damn thing into an outlet. Not that big of a deal.

A fix is in the works.

I have been having serious battery issues, also. I closed every program I had running when I got to work, and it was at about 73% when I got there. It sat on my desk for 3 hours with a black screen, no alerts at all. After 3 hours, I checked it and was at 15%. Apple, you can't be serious...

I work 10-12 hrs a day in and out of a hospital and my office seeing patients, I'm not sitting at a cubicle. You may work at subway, but some of us are on the move constantly and aren't afforded to sit next to an outlet and play games and Facebook all day.

Hilarious!

A battery fix can not come soon enough. I have had my iPhone 4S since it was released, and hadn't noticed a problem. That was until monday when I put the battery percentage on. My god, the thing went from 100% to 93% in a whole 14 minutes of me writing and responding to email. UGH.

5 quick fixes to fix battery iphone with os 5

1. Turn off bluetooth if you are not using it
2. Under notfications shut off calander and reminders (if not using them)
3. under general and restrictions turn off ping
4.under general and about, go to diagonstic, turn off auto send
5 under location services. then system services turn off time zone

Bonus, always quit Facebook from the multitasking bar, it seems to always be on in the background.

I did all of this and went from losing 2% every 15 mins, to losing only dropping 2% over an hour and half.

Hilarious!

Well I mean seriously, thank you for informing me about AC electricity and that I should just shut up and use it, I hadn't thought about that. If that was possible I would. My 4 was better than my SGS2, but my SGS2 is better than my 4s (by a lot).

I sure hope your ability to help patients is better than your ability to post a message.

Get an external battery pack if you are so worried about it.

I'm not even going to attempt to figure out what that means, but you keep living the dream in your parents basement and baking that bread we all love.

REALLY? Must you further the Apple stereotype of a typical user further?
