My bad, I used an incorrect word. I still don’t see how that equates to Beats sucking before Apple, though. Even that article says good things about the Solo2. And none of it talks about whether the product actually is sturdy or if the sound is good.

That’s because, it was the first generation beats that sucked. Solo 2 (as mentioned by the article), was created by a different company, was released around the time of Apple take over talks (2014) so who knows what discussions were at the table in the year leading up to it! Perhaps being a company who sells ****** products was no longer going to cut it.

HomePod is focused on sound quality...so your point is moot?
Homepod doesn't sound good in my opinion. Plenty of people were disappointed on here, Reddit, etc. It may sound moderately ok compared to similar sized cheap smart speakers, but not real bookshelf or floor speakers. There have been comparisons where $100 speakers sound better than the homepod fwiw.

Your headphone brand advice please.

This seems an appropriate place to ask this. What brand is the Beats sound similar to?

I have tried several brands of headphones and earphones.

Sennheiser, I love. Anything Sennheiser is exciting and very pleasurable to listen with.

Brands I have found fair but uninteresting: Bose, Ultimate Ears, AKG

Brands I have actively disliked: Shure, B&W

Where is Beats likely to fit on this spectrum? I'd really appreciate your advice.

Thanks,
Hugh Jigo

Oops, you missed beyerdynamic. Open back are super, you can listen for days without ear fatigue, unless of course the volume knob is on 11+.

These colours look cheap, and tacky, targeted towards children. My god Apple what are doing? There are many good headphones from Sony, Bowers & Wilkins, Panasonic even, to name just three. I think Apple paid over the odds for this company. Just like Microsoft does when it buys out all the other companies it has bought over the years. Nokia in particular.

FYI, beats earning billions while Nokia is losing money.

Apple could cure cancer and both MR and Reddit would find a way to be disappointed by it.

That's it. I'm done with MacRumours and especially Apple. Just constant rubbish being posted here and Apple continuously marketing rubbish that made an old faithful unfaithful in December, 2017.

See you all - it was nice chatting to you

i wonder this daily actually. Great point!

I’ve had 3 pairs of the powerbeats (gift...giveaway...pawnshop)...The quality is complete cr@p. The rubber around the volume contr allways deteriorates...the part that goes into your ear seems to be held to the larger part by elmers glue and cracks if your breathe on it hard (this has happened to me twice). So, why did I keep using it? because the sound quality is good and the size and shape are perfect for working out.

It’s like Sennheiser if you boost the bass, especially mid-bass, 3dB and reduce the mids 3dB.

Beats, for the most part, is running independently (like how FileMaker and Workflow are running). They even said that the headphones aren't a significant portion of why they bought them; it was more about having to make Apple Music as well as the brand itself. As for the fact that they bought Beats for at least twice the amount as the money used to buy NeXT,... eh, I have no opinion about that.

My only problem with Beats is why Apple doesn't get Beats to use the same sound technologies as Apple outside of the W-series chips and their environmental efforts.

What sound technologies would that be? They do use AAC. Would be cool to see track-dependent equalization like HomePod. I think the Beats Studio3 may have a mild version of that but due to the specific wording I couldn’t confirm.

Apple is focused on clarity (mids/treble), while Beats is focused on energy (bass).

If you want to be an individual while still having quality, buy a pair of Grados. Your ears will thank you. Your wallet may hate you.

I wouldn't say that. The /r/Apple forum is full of the most die hard, delusional Fanboys

Every brand you listed, are miles better than any beats headphones. Beats don't even belong in the list of products you mentioned.

I don’t know if I believe that Reddit can be positive about anything.

I can backup this statement. HomePod is great "for its size". The bass is deep and tight on low to mid level. Maybe that's why most consumers perceive it as great sounding. But 60% and up volume, well the sound is getting unstable, like a muddy bass. You just can't defy physics. The midrange is lacking because it has no midrange driver. The base is only good up to certain point. With that said I'm gonna buy two of those paired, but it's still costs too much for what it is.

Very well put. The driver side alone should tell a lot without even having to listen to it.

Lol i can agree with that statement
