I agree with most posters, I've only seen pix, but the original had facets and texture, like a sculpture, the new design is, well, just slabs of plate glass. not as interesting to look at. looks like a window, not striking or interesting. maybe the new glass will be high tech creating apple holograms, or let you walk right thru it.
even a large glass apple would be more interesting. maybe the orig design was not totally safe, like the new W hotel here that was dropping it's glass balconies glass into the pool and sidewalks. Wow W.

but,,, you know Steve, if it wasn't able to be made by his original concept of it, as soon as it could be redone, it was. similar to his planned UFO bldg in CA, touting all this new fangled 'now it can be done', large curved glass design, ok we get it.
I do love the glass stairway in the other NY store. hopefully this cube will be striking. haven't they done a cube before? oh yea.

As Mr. Larson finely put it,

"Sure, living in a glass house has its disadvantages, but you should see the birds smack it!" :D (one old lady says to another, as they sit on rocking chairs in a glass house)

Yuck who would want to go to NY? That's the place where winos and hobos go to die... You will die faster than a NY minute... So not worth going to NY to see that... Just go elsewhere like Texas, California or Michigan, at least these states does not have a high murder rate as NY does. The minute you buy something Apple related in NY, you will get murdered due to the high market value of these products at any pawn shops.

Next Apple Store will be a box-shaped, black building with sides in the ratio 1:4:9 (possibly extending to 16 in the fourth dimension) :)

I liked the old store better - I guess

I'm a photographer and the 5th Ave Apple Store was my favorite architectural building to shoot in NYC - I'm gonna miss those panels...

This is newsworthy? This is an effort worth making? These are dollars worth spending?
Apple has too much money.
(ChrisH3677 please note the spelling of the word "too" in the last sentence. "To" is used for going somewhere as in "I'm going to go to the store." "Too" is used when the meaning is also or as well as. "Two" is a number.) Cut and paste the above for future reference.

Beautiful pics, meckime. And they highlight what was special about the old design.

No but I hear they run an antenna around the outside in this new design.

Yeah, but at some point they'll have to put a big rubber bumper on it.

Like the original more

You guys are so predictable... Could those eternal whiners, those change fearing minds try to explain their points of view instead of just declaring "the original was way better", "this is ugly", "worst design I've ever seen", etc. ?

re microsoft reatil stores

pathetic how microsoft copies aapl with retail store
would be a joke if ms would try to build "iconic" style stores like aapl
think zune stores

"subdivisions..." - rush

hmm

I like the old design better, less "clean" but in a good way. The new one seems a little more boring.

Well said.
Apple has become a caricature of itself.
This is the most criminal waste of money and resources I've seen in a while.
Talk about power going to ones head.
Just think of the good that the money could be put to use for rather than this stupid ego driven tripe!
Plus as many have stated here...the original was perfectly fine (or better).
Add in all the dumb law suits and you have a company that is in my opinion losing the plot in a big way.
Get over yourself Apple.

You do realize that paying out their cash reserves in the form of dividends in going to set an awful precedent, right? Apple is a technology company at their core.. the money would probably be better and more productively issued for R&D and supply expansion rather than tying up their retained earnings into the interests of investors. Apple has not cared about paying Wall Street from the beginning, and that won't change any time soon unless new management and a board succumbs to shareholder pressure (when Apple stops innovating or strays from their original principles). The moment when dividend repayment becomes and issue for Apple is the moment when they've completely become either complacent with their standing as a company, or when every single nook and cranny in tech has been innovated, marketed, and sold.

And i'm fairly confident that early investors in Apple (or at least the ones that Apple cares about) have made plenty of money in capital gains (taxed less, dividend repayments are taxed as ordinary income) by being loyal shareholders with a vote. The only people who aren't happy are the ones who don't actually own any stock.. they just love to use it as a reason to be mad at the company.

Say what you want, but Apple is being safe and smart with their money. There's more to the rationale than just being greedy. A lot of technology companies are valued on their innovation.. and you've got to make sure you have the most funds available to do it effectively. To overlook that presents the possibility of financially deadlocking your company. And as we're learning now, a financial deadlock for a company in technology means everything.
