I actual like the old design better, the facets of the glass edges created interesting light reflections. Oh well. I don't really see what all the fuss is about.

Why not try something different?

Just because something looked good before doesn't mean you have to be conservative and do the same thing again. If you have this amazing chance at building an entrance on fifth avenue, why stick to the most architecturally cliched shape?

Uh oh. MORE GLASS!!! I already know someone that's not going to like it.

For the record, I actually kind of like the old version better for the illusion it projected.

P.S.

Gigantic waste of money and time. Couldn't care less

Give the money to the poor or to the shareholders. Sad that this is the best Apple could do with all that money.

I don't see that much of a difference. I've been there and seen it on TV (many times). From memory I couldn't tell you that there were that many glass sections or if they looked like one total unit or what. I can see the difference and it is cleaner. I think before large glass dividers were set up with the many-as-one version and Apple mimicked that with this store. But now seeing this, I suppose the future of large glass structures could look more in line with this. (When I was there it was 'too' busy, I made a phone call on an iPhone, very briefly looked at an iMac and then left—no purchases.)

But I also see this as marketing. That is probably Apple's best store…or close to it. I am sure there will be more news hype as this is unveiled. Granted this is an Apple Fan Site but there were already two stories on here leading to lots of chatter. How often do other retail stores being built or partially remodeled get this type of hype?

Maybe they needed to redo some structural things and figured they'd test some new glass/ways to build with glass before their new Cupertino campus.

I don't really understand their "tag line" on the cover from yesterday's story about went from 90+ panels to 15 panels as if they are being greener.

If this is just cosmetic I say what a waste of money. If you want to get rid of that much money have a drawing or something and give out some free iPads or something.

I like the old one better. It looks more like a jewel with all of the facets. The new one is even harder to see. What's fun about photographing something invisible?

...or they could do something that ISN'T a stupid business decision and improve their retail stores! You know that even this simple change will drive more people to the store just to see it. I might take a trip out there myself!

Well said.
Apple has become a caricature of itself.
This is the most criminal waste of money and resources I've seen in a while.
Talk about power going to ones head.
Just think of the good that the money could be put to use for rather than this stupid ego driven tripe!
Plus as many have stated here...the original was perfectly fine (or better).
Add in all the dumb law suits and you have a company that is in my opinion losing the plot in a big way.
Get over yourself Apple.

Wow dude, I'm all for freedom of opinion but take some time to think about it for a while and do some research.

Steve jobs personally paid for it, not apple inc.

also anyone has the right to spend their money on anything they want, do you want someone telling you what you have to buy?

Lastly, Apple didn't get to where it is at by skimping out on the details, I believe their attention to detail on such a micro level (focusing on a glass structure at one of their stores) is the kind of thing that got them to the top. Their attention to detail and minor edits over time created apple as a whole. it is the mark of a good engineer/artist, to obsess over the tiniest of details that the average person would only take for granted.

I mean you can still think whatever you want, thats totally cool. But appreciate the free art we are getting :D

Exactly, this is what makes Apple Apple. They want to show that they're always moving ahead and have a very high standard when it comes to design and details.

Hate to say it, but I kinda prefer the old design. The seams and so on made it look more interesting and industrial-looking. However, the new one looks pretty good too, so we'll see what the final product is like. :D

I think when you're at the store, the new one will look better.

But for photos, taking a picture of almost clear glass is not very interesting. It'll make it less appealing as a tourist destination.

completely misunderstanding the statistic

Does Apple realize that this Cube is the most photographed site in New York city?

The old store was, reportedly, the single most photographed tourist attraction in NYC.

Note that the statistic was "most photographed geo-tagged photo uploaded to Flickr and Picasa".

Consider that geo-tagging is pretty rare, except in some expensive cameraphones. Consider also that most people don't upload their photographs to Flickr/Picasa.

Not shown to be the "most photographed" by any realistic measure - only by one highly biased statistic.

So, they spend thousands and thousands of dollars to redo something that was cool already. Seems like a waste of money.
