Why use separate planes when Apple can use one solid block?

I think it looked fine and was cutting-edge in the first place. It had only been up for less than 5 years, and they are already re-doing it. Apple just has too much money to throw around right now on this chicken gibberish.

I have the feeling that

1) This is one of their most famous locations in the world and Apple thinks that it deserves extra special attention. After all, when news reports show crowds and lines at Apple Stores, they usually show footage from this location. It is also one of the most photographed spots in NYC.

2) The new, simpler design was actually their goal in the first place, but they were limited by technology at the time. This is probably one of those direct-from-Steve things that rectifies an irksome mistake from the past.

3) They are starting to use this new technology design in many of their new buildings (Shanghai store, spaceship Cupertino HQ), so they want to either test it or show it off.

4) They are probably trying to finish it in time for the iPhone 5 launch.

Plus, come on - they've got $60 billion in cash, with no debt. What's $6 million on their most famous store? ;)

...can you still turn it upside down and pull the logic board out though with that handle?

I prefer the old one. I like the cube made of squares. It added another dimension.

Whenever pitching before/after graphics, always show the new in bright sunlight, with perfectly clean, sanitized surroundings, and show the existing structure on a dark evening, on an overcast, rainy day with cluttered surroundings.

Well, the first one is an artist's rendering, so it would make sense that it's under "ideal" conditions. However, I think the photo taken in the evening is actually a lot more interesting and attractive.

Count me as one who also preferred the original. As a structure it's just become less interesting to look at.

Note that the statistic was "most photographed geo-tagged photo uploaded to Flickr and Picasa".

Consider that geo-tagging is pretty rare, except in some expensive cameraphones. Consider also that most people don't upload their photographs to Flickr/Picasa.

Not shown to be the "most photographed" by any realistic measure - only by one highly biased statistic.

Point taken.

Still seems likely the publicity will be large.

Not that it's really that important, but I much prefer the original design. Without the smaller panels the design become almost invisible and Apple will probably get sued when people start walking/bumping into the glass (seriously, they'll probably be forced to put decals or signs on the glass to prevent people from injuring themselves).

I wish they would put a four story tall statue of Steve in the lobby. That would be a nice touch.

I hate to say it, but you would think that at least one our many well-armed crackheads would have shot at this by now. Or have they?

I agree

I find the old one to be more architecturally interesting. They should have considered changing only the center panels on each side so that the Apple Logo was not interrupted by the lines and left all the other smaller panes.

I agree....I like the 3d grid pattern created by the edges and intersections of the original much better! :(

It's hard to tell from the rendering but I prefer the smaller glass panels. It looks more complex and the light hits it more areas. I'll have to wait and see once it's done.

:(

This really sucks! Im going to New York in about 2 weeks and this will probably Still be going on! :( Sad Day. My New York Vacations is ruined

should have kept the old design

Of course it's just a mockup, but I too like the old design.

Like the facets of a diamond, the panels and hardware increased the interest factor of the cube.

The new one seems very plain and boring in comparison, IMO.

Knowing Apple, it will be good.

People are placing attention on the mockup as if it's real. It's not.

Glossy again? I didn't read everyone's posts on this thread, but I'm pretty sure that this isn't the first joke like that here. But I couldn't resist.

PS - I like glossy!

I prefer the old one - because I can see it! I can see people walking face-first into the new one, looking all shocked and surprised, then embarrassed when they realise what they've just done..

Except the rope and security guards would prevent you from even getting close to it.
