what does the reserve mean in terms of actually obtaining one via BB?

Means nothing. They told us yesterday that you can reserve one but there was no guarantee if and when it would ever come. Why reserve with bb who gets 5 to 10 at a time when you can orr directly from apple?

I just called my BB and they are doing $100 deposit reservations. They'll call you when it comes in, but can't guarantee when that will be. Which I'm guessing means that if you don't make a reservation, unless you're looking for a model that nobody's reserving you're not going to be able to buy one there for a while.

I might go make a reservation this afternoon - right now ordering online from apple doesn't guarantee one for 2-3 weeks, so this at least has a shot at being faster.

Also, I just called my Apple store and they are NOT doing any sort of reservations. So the only way to get one there is pure luck. I'm leaning toward reserving at BB, as much as I generally dislike the store.

that's exactly what i thought.

and i agree with you.

It's just putting another option out there. I don't have time to check a billion stores or keep going to Apple stores. Buying online through Apple is currently 2-3 weeks right now.

Of course they can't GUARANTEE when. How could they???

Ok I don't get it, I was just at my local Best Buy and they had a whole cage full of them. Probably had 50+ and appeared to have every version in both colors. Is this like the only Best Buy in the country that's like this or what?

Lol, and where are you? :)

Barboursville WV Best Buy. At first I thought it was a cage full of first gen iPads since it only said "iPad" on the side, but then saw the front where it shows the side edge with white and yup, iPad 2. I even asked the guy and he said yes, they have anything I'd like.

I'm getting on a plane right now. :D

Just reserved two at Best Buy. They had received a shipment of 30 this morning (knew I should have went there right when it opened) that sold out very quickly. They're cautiously optimistic they'll get shipments Monday or Tuesday. Only 25 people had reserved (not many seem to know you can) and I reserved two white 64 gb (one verizon one att), so I should be getting them in their next shipment.

Reserved mine at BB. The $100 deposit is refundable if you cancel before your name comes up, so no reason not to, really! Also, she couldn't tell me exactly how many people were before me in line, but she said that very few people had reserved 16GB models (what I wanted), mostly it had been the higher-capacity models, so I like my odds. I'm guessing (hoping) that I'll have it within the week - faster than ordering from apple and less frustrating than calling/visiting other stores daily. And if I just happen to come upon one first, I can cancel.

Went to Fayetteville nc bb to check out the iPad. About to walk in when someone crashed into the power pole and shut the store down.. Good chance they will have some in stock since they are still closed now.

Still waiting on my white 32GB Wifi to go from Prepared to Shipped.. But my 2 covers and black wifi has shipped!

Got mine at BB in Cumming GA (north suburb of Atlanta). Got there at 3:30ish and about 25 people were in line. They handed out tickets at 430 just like clockwork, exactly as others have described here (tell them what you want and if they have a ticket for that model you get it). I didn't get the counts for all models, but this one had wifi only. They had a sales person pushing hard to sell an upgrade to your AT&T line for a 10% discount off the price. I got my 64GB Black Wifi, they only had 5 of that model and I got #4. Also got the black leather smart cover, wanted navy but all they had was black. I confirmed that I have 30 days to return the cover so if I can find a navy one I'll take this one back later. Was out of there by about 5:30, kind of pissed because there were several people in front of me who were returning iPad 1's and that took much longer at the register, but all in all it was a good experience and it was handled well. They sure were pushing the $109 insurance plan hard though, must have been asked 4 times if I wanted it (I declined...).

I stopped at the BB in Erie, PA 15 minutes before closing on March 11 and they had a huge stack of them on a counter all divided out by model. I walked up and asked for one, he grabbed one off the stack and rang me up. There really wasn't anyone around to be interested in an iPad. There was a couple playing around with a display model but that was the entirety of the people in the Apple section.

That was my situation yesterday at BB. They had a whole skid of them and nobody seemed to pay them any attention. I'm running back today to see how many is still there.

Well probably 2 reasons there so plentiful.

1. No Apple stores in WV, so the other chains probably got a lot more units than in areas with Apple stores nearby that horded stock.

2. I grew up in WV, it's one of the poorest states, so pricey gadgets aren't going to be in as high of demand as in richer areas, big cities etc.

Sorry to hear it :( I went to North Haven and they had a lot. Not a TON, but definitely at least 100.

Hey, I was in that line, too!

I was about 50th in line, got there right before 4:30 (after checking Target), and got the 32GB Black WiFi I wanted. Got out just before 6:30, and enjoyed the experience. Compared to what some went through, only to end up empty-handed, I feel like I got pretty lucky.

From what I heard in line, I think their total stock was 70 - don't know how many of each model, though.

You were about 15 places ahead of me when they did a count of 70 online. Folks a few spots ahead of me left disappointed when the voucher people said there were no 16gb wifis left. Buying one of the less popular ones--64gb with 3G I was confident there'd be no problem arriving at 4:15.

Incidentally, a woman just behind me was reading from a Nook, so I asked, "You're getting an iPad and you have a Nook?" She said you can't do ePub drm library loans. I did a quick search on my iPhone and found Bluefire, a reader that claims to have a drm workaround. When I mentioned it she said she had tried it on her old iPad and couldn't get it to work. "Maybe you'll have better luck than me." I did and had no trouble loading up on loans from New Haven library. No Nook for me.

I have a Kindle 3 and will keep it for reading e-books. I can't read for hours on end on an LCD screen or it really hurts my eyes. I can read indefinitely on the K3 with no problems.

iPad is for netsurfing, Netflix in bed, reading PDFs of scholarly journal articles, games, random apps etc.

I wouldn't rule out an dreaded definitely, but I read for hours on my laptop and eyestrain hasn't been a problem. I hear there are individual differences. I'd consider an ereader for its smaller size. But the iPad emulates the powers of a computer and the ereader can't match that. For serious writing the iPad does lag behind a computer--although it does allow the transfer of content to the computer, something a reader can't do.

and three, their system online shows them as sold out. If everyone is checking there, then nobody is hitting the store. :D

Yeah, it's just an individual thing.

My girlfriend has had an iPad 1 since launch and I've read in the Kindle app several times. It bugs my eyes a lot more than e-ink.

It's fine for shorter term reading like news papers a couple scholarly articles in PDFs etc., but my eyes get strained after an hour or so of straight reading much more than on the Kindle or a paper book.
