You were about 15 places ahead of me when they did a count of 70 online. Folks a few spots ahead of me left disappointed when the voucher people said there were no 16gb wifis left. Buying one of the less popular ones--64gb with 3G I was confident there'd be no problem arriving at 4:15.

Incidentally, a woman just behind me was reading from a Nook, so I asked, "You're getting an iPad and you have a Nook?" She said you can't do ePub drm library loans. I did a quick search on my iPhone and found Bluefire, a reader that claims to have a drm workaround. When I mentioned it she said she had tried it on her old iPad and couldn't get it to work. "Maybe you'll have better luck than me." I did and had no trouble loading up on loans from New Haven library. No Nook for me.

The majority of libraries use the Overdrive system and it supports the Nook:

When I bought my 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G (GSM) iPad at BB they were being big liars and telling people they were required to sign up for AT&T plans then and there.

I thought that was pretty disgustingly underhanded and asinine. Also, it was patently false and after pointing it out to them on Apple's own site that the original ability to sign up at will later directly from the iPad was still a feature, they stopped lying to people.

Did anyone else have this experience?

It seems to me that my BB was not very well prepared for these sort of details during the launch, and one of the least informed employees was the one all the other believed on this matter.

That said, I was able to get the iPad version I wanted on my terms and the only disappointment of going to BB is that BB (at least the ones here) are not carrying the red smart covers. Because of this, I actually ended up visiting the local Apple Store anyway. I got there a full 3.5 hours after the launch started and people were STILL in line waiting to get in and buy iPads. Insane. They did have the red cover I wanted, despite the lines.

Go get 'em, Apple.

Actually, I was the long-haired guy you talked to while you waited in line :)

I missed out on Friday and all the Best Buys around here sold out. I went Saturday morning and reserved one. It wasn't a $100 deposit though. You basically told them what model you wanted and then you had to buy a $100 gift card. They said they would call when it was available and then you have 48 hours to come and get it or it would be returned to stock. The reason I went to Best Buy is because I have $300 (now $400) in gift cards. Went ahead and picked up a gray poly case while I was there. I'm probably 5th in line so I feel sure the next time they receive a shipment I'll be called. Just hope I don't regret getting the 16GB. I have an iPhone and iPod classic so I will not need to put any music on it. I guess I can always go bigger next time if necessary.

Anyone with any official (or semi official) word about when best buy stores will have more units?

I think it may vary from store to store. I called before I went in and the lady said they expect some by the end of the week and at the latest at the beginning of next week.

When I went into the store to reserve mine, the girl that helped me said it varies which ones and how many they are getting in each day. She said today they got in two. She did say the chances for the one I want (32 GB with Wifi 3G AT&T) are a lot better since there were only 6 other folks that wanted that one as opposed to a lot more people wanting the non-3G.

I reserved a 64gb AT&T white today, and the rep said that I was only the second person to reserve one of those and that, like you, my chances of getting it sooner were better than those who want the wifi only models.

So I reserved two (64GB black wifi & 16GB white wifi) from BB and ordered them from Apple. The Apple order ship date ETA is April 1st. Would I be able to refund the two BB gift cards should the Apple order ship before I get a call from BB?

No. Gift cards are NON refundable.

The $100 deposit you have taken for the reservation WILL be refunded to the gift card, but you can NOT return the gift card for refund, has to be used at BB now.

I didn't see the FAQ before, thanks for pointing it out.

The GeekSquad and BB employees, taking my reservation, at least told me 10 times that if I do not buy the iPad, funds will be credited back to the gift card, but I can NOT give gift card back for a cash/cc refund. I will take a printout of this statement when I go back:

Is the $100 deposit (gift card) refundable?

Yes, it can be returned as long as it has not been used. Or, it can be used on another purchase.

NICE. I was also told that the gift card wasn't refundable, but I went ahead and reserved an iPad anyway. Glad to see the gift card is refundable in case my Apple Store order comes through first.

Best Buy are mostly a bunch of idiots. I went there Saturday morning and decided I'd at least ask if there were any iPads (not expecting there to be). The guy in the Apple section told me no, they were all gone. I asked where do I reserve one. He told me I couldn't, I'd have to check back later in the week. Someone over heard him and told me to go to Customer Service and that I could reserve one there. Found it odd that the only guy working in the Apple section knew nothing about the reservation process.

i hate that.. i dont really blame them though.. i blame Best Buy in general.. i bet that dude is just covering his own ass because if he told you something that he wasnt told to say he prob loose his job.. big businesses are like that.. i have found that most of the employees are just normal joes doing their job.. some have no clue about the technology they are selling only what they are told to say.. when we were in line on Friday everyone was talking about some of the things people overheard earlier in the day inside about the ipad 2.. they were still pushing the ipad 1 to people who didnt know any better.. trying to sell them clear covers over the screen and other equipment most users will never need.. its all about the money..

glad someone overheard and shot you in the right direction :D

BestBuy workers are so STUPID!

I just call cuz i want to reserve an iPad via phone, well she told me that i need to come by myself and do the reserve cuz i need to have the gift card with me and i cant pay via phone.

What happen with the credit cards and debit cards?
They can send you a confirmation code with you best buy gift, but NO they want you to drive off to the store and do the reserve.

Driven up to 20 miles... the gas is really cheap right now.
Spending money, miles and time... just for a reserve.

Good deal Best Buy.

And they don't even know when the stock comes. HILARIOUS!

I just pass... now you can't even see the stock on the Best Buy page lol.

How does this make best buy employees stupid?

Sounds like you're just mad that you have to go in to make your reservation

They've never done it that way so I wouldn't say that they are stupid by a long shot. An in-store reservation is just that.

I was a manager at Circuit City for 5 years... phone transactions were against policy. (There were a FEW odd circumstances)... but I'm sure BBY is the same. Don't blame them. It would be chaos, if that was permitted.

I can top all that. I was checking BB's website yesterday and noticed that a store near my office had 64GB white listed as in stock. I drove over at lunch and was told they had nothing. I was offered a $100 reservation, at which I balked. Later, anther floor person asked if I needed help, and I asked her if they had any iPads. She told me "no," so I casually told her that there website said otherwise and they should fix that.

She was surprised that the website was saying there was stock, so she checked her instore inventory thing. Whadayaknow, their machine says there are 5 64GB in stock. She keeps asking people over her headset if they know anything, and nobody does. So, she walks over to the cage where the iPads are (I had already looked in there and saw only first-gen iPads) and opens it up. Sure enough, tucked behind one of the old iPads are five new ones. I bought one. Maybe I should have gotten all five...

So, there you go. Sometimes none of them no anything at all. At least the one girl was willing to look into it herself.

Wow. Good story! Yeah, I've had simialar happen but without the good ending. Apparently if reserves come in, they show up online as being in stock since they are literally in the store. The system doesn't differentiate. You got lucky though... good deal!

I just went to BestBuy.com and now I can't check inventory. All models show "In Store Only" and there is no link to "Check Stores".
