When I was at the iPhone 4 launch at Apple.. people that waited for like 8 hours gave up when they heard that there might not be a chance of them having the iPhone 4 in stock. I was surprised that I waited 12 hours to get that iPhone 4 and they had a few left in stock.

How crazy/accurate does this sound:

A Best Buy service rep told me that they typically don't get a a huge rush on launch events. My local BB is pretty close to an Apple store, and there are 4 Apple stores within about an hour of each other. She advised that for the last iPad launch, the nearest Apple store sold out before they did, and for the iPhone 4 launch, crowds didn't really show up until about noon. They sound pretty organized, and will be selling the 3g versions.

However, She also advised that they've been getting a ton of calls on this one. I'm hesitant because the iPad attracts people who don't normally go ga ga for Apple.

With these facts, would you take your chances on Best Buy? I'll be able to arrive at 3. I'm looking to get the 64gb 3g black (att).

Edit:

Has anybody had this kind of experience at Best Buy launches?

sounds like you went to the El Segundo, CA location...unless you had a very similar personal experience today

where are you in atl? I just called the kennesaw store and they are doing the ticket system, it's limited 1 per, and they claim they don't know how many of each they'll have until the morning. figures cause i need three x.x guess ill be dividing and conquering lol

I am over in Canton but had planned on going to the BB over at North Point Mall as I am heading to the movies for my son's birthday party. I wonder if all the BB's in Atlanta are doing the ticketing system. Guess I will give the one in Alpharetta a call in the morning and find out.

Call your local best buy. Asking questions more suited towards your local stores is silly.

One of ours said to be there by 4pm today as at 4:30 they'll start doing the ticketing thing. This of course means 3 or 3:30 to get there. This store is the gateway west from northern VA so a lot of people may be hitting it, unless they are coming from Reston or Tysons where there are Apple stores.

There's also a little known Verizon store in the area getting some. Check your local options is all I'm saying. Reading rumors about other people's stores in their area won't help you in your quest if you must get an ipad2 (or two) today.

I've bought products from Best Buy launches before so here's an FYI for those wondering how/why Best Buy does a ticket system.

1) Lines form just like any other event
2) Best Buy reps come out 30min before with a stack of papers
3) They go down the line and ask which model you want (be ready for this)
4) They hand you a numbered paper specific to that model only
5) They tell you to read the Geek Squad ext warranty info (see why they do this)
6) You continue to wait and they let you enter in groups of 10 (But at last launch everyone went in since only 9 people showed up)

Now that was how its worked for several products in the past. But the whole 5PM garbage is what throws me off. I'd like to rant about Apple being D-Bags for turning their most loyal customers into human billboards and marketing pawns but I guess this is Apple life nowadays so I'll just suck it up and be herded with the rest of the cattle.

Best Buy has been told it is 1 per person/household can't remember how it was worded.
Can anyone confirm this? For the last few years its been limit 2 and no "per household" nonsense. I need 2 and really dont think the line will appreciate my wife and a crying baby hanging out for 2hrs.

Bestbuy already has a line

I drove by our local bestbuy this morning and at 7:30 Central time, there were already 4 or 5 people in line!! I wasn't planning on lining up until 1, guess I need to change my plans

Last year they did have a one per person limit, but I wonder if that's a store decision..

I'm in the Detroit area. I've never been to a Best Buy iProduct launch. Do you think there will be a similar experience for this launch?

My BB said one per household (no his and hers, I guess), and their system will enforce it between BB stores. Not sure how they'll manage that, but I was told this was their "official" policy.

People in northern virginia, what's your experience with Best Buy on launch day? I work in Baileys Crossroads and will probably leave a bit early and stop at the Best Buy on the corner of Columbia Pike and Rt. 7. Hopefully it's not too bad there.

I wonder if those people think it will be for sale at opening at 10am?

Are they going to be checking IDs? Because otherwise, I'm not sure how they would enforce the household limit. If I wanted two, I would just make sure my wife gets in line at a different place.

It looks like I might have to brave Best Buy this afternoon.

I just called my local Target (central CT) and asked about the availability of the iPad 2 and the guy said they are only getting it when they sell out of the "other ones." I presume this guy is just a moron, but if someone working in the electronics dept at Target on a release day like this doesn't have concrete knowledge of the product, I'm going to take that as a bad sign and head across the street to Best Buy - though I loathe Best Buy.

Just out of curiosity. Does "Best Buy will also offer customers the opportunity to reserve their iPad 2 for in-store pick-up beginning on March 12" mean that people that don't get one today can pre-order today for pick-up starting tomorrow? Or does that mean that people can come in tomorrow and pre-order for pick-up later?

I would assume the second option, because I can't imagine them getting in a new shipment tomorrow. But just wanted to clarify that.

you assume correctly. Most stores are getting their shipment today and probably won't be getting any more for about a week.
