What kind of cheap crap microfiber are you buying? A semi decent microfiber will not scratch if properly cared for.

The best ones are the free ones you can get from the eye doctor. :D I have a few and they work great! Just make sure there's no debris like grains of sand, salt, rice or other abrasives stuck on the cloth or on the screen before wiping.

I don't think using the tape is a good idea. It will probably cause the oleophobic coating to fade sooner.

Actually.... no. The most effective cleaning method is to spray some electronics detergent onto a cleaning cloth and gently wash the surfaces of the iPhone. When you're done it's good to finish off polishing the phone using special dry microfiber material.

The tape cost me only $3 I don't know how much your electronic cleaning thing cost

I have used a microfiber cloth for years and NEVER scratched my screen. The tape will certinally remove dust but how could it remove oil finger prints and smudges. Sorry I got to call BS on that part.

Microfiber cloth is still king for me. Each to his own.

Didn't you see my picture? It took all the grease and oil and finger print. Try it once if you don't trust me. It won't hurt your phone by trying out only once

5$ and it's used for cleaning all my electronics including PC, PC monitor, LCD TV, Hi-Fi, iPhone etc. I didn't say it's the fastest method, I said it is the most effective one, which makes your iPhone look like new for a long time. There's really no better way for cleaning oils and smudges off the screen than some good detergent. Besides, microfiber cloth makes dust less likely to sit on your iPhone thus resulting in a more cleaner device for a longer period of time. But like someone else said - to each his own if yo wanna keep cleaning your iPhone by a tape then go for it ;)

Why not

Those soft black cloths that come with iMacs are amazing for cleaning the iPhone. At work we deployed an entire computer lab full of iMacs so I have a lifetime supply of them. :)

I wonder if Apple sells those separately? I'm surprised they're not included with the iPhone, since they work so well!

I'm sorry, but are you going to pay anyone to get their iPhone screen repaired if you're wrong? I'm sure you mean well, but as far as anyone knows, you could easily be some troll trying to get people to mess up their iPhones for fun. It's no skin off your nose.

I don't think you could ever assure anyone that it won't hurt their phones because you don't even know the long term effects on YOUR phone. Because eventually that adhesive has to have some effect on the coating, wearing it down more quickly if nothing else.

I swear every time I log onto this forum I walk away seriously questioning society.

This is so true of this forum. Also true of one other forum I frequent (the road cycling subforum of bikeforums)... I really should find better forums.

Microfiber cloths don't scratch your screen, but any grit embedded in them will. Keep your microfiber cloths in a clean place. If it's smudging your screen, throw it in the washer with a load of laundry. This will get rid of any oil that is absorbed into the cloth, so that the cloth can now absorb the oil from your screen.

Don't be stupid.

If you keep your microfiber cloths clean, then they won't scratch your screen. I've never had a microfiber cloth scratch any of my screens because I keep them in a clean place and wash them biannually. Dust won't scratch your screen, grit will.

My point is that you could easily "say" that you did it and not have even tried it. But even more importantly, you have no idea what long term damage is being done to your phone (which, for the literate among us, I also said). You shouldn't be assuring people that it's safe because you can't tell anyone what your phone will look like in six months or a year from now.

I'm with you. The OP has good intentions, but does not know enough to say whether or not this is a viable option for the long term. OP, keep your ideas to yourself unless you know definitively whether or not this will harm yours or others' devices.

Y'all seriously think a lil scotch tape will harm your screen??

5+ times per day, times 365 days per year=1825 times that you peel scotch tape off of your screen. Each time you peel it off, you are taking a very minute bit of the oleophobic coating. If you do it enough times, it will be pulled off in its entirety. I've had oleophobic coatings wear off just with normal use. The screen had no scratches, but the oleophobic coating was worn away. If normal use wears off the coating, then the tape will definitely assist in doing so.

Eh...quick wipe off a t-shirt or towel has never failed me since iPhone 2G. Damp kitchen towel works just as good too.

What happens when the coating wears off? Does the screen look different?
