The back of the iPhone 4 scratches pretty easily as well (but probably not as noticeable). The nice thing about metal is you can always take a billow pad and give it a nice brush look to get the scratches out.

So what about the white model? Is it less susceptible to scratching than the black since it's not painted?

Way to go MacRumors. You're looking for page hits and now you'll get them.

On a side note, despite mine being physically perfect it has a yellow tint to the screen (noticeable by eye but even more so next to the old phone!) - Is this likely to improve over time or another "issue"? I know they don't glue the screen the same way now...

People will latch onto anything to complain about...buy one of the many cases soon to be released.

Smaller screen then the competition, less features then the competition, defective native apps (ie maps) and now substandard parts and finishes ......

This will be the last successful iPhone launch. The competition has finally passed the iPhone.

Have you actually tried to use an S3?? I did... it was entertaining. To be fair, maps isn't defective. It's brand new, and performs better than Google maps did when it launched. I think it will surpass Google's offering within the next year.

After the original announcement of the iPhone 5, one early concern amongst readers was how well the anodized aluminum back and edges of the black iPhone 5 would hold up over time.

One lengthy thread on our forums has been actively discussing the potential issue and Pocket-Lint in their review did note some wear around the edges after some early usage. One person on another forum got straight to the matter and took keys and a SIM card tray pin to the back and edges of an in-store iPhone 5 unit with these results.

Of course, purposefully scratching a device is a bit extreme, but daily usage of any phone will generate some wear and tear. This may be a concern if you are particularly sensitive to the issue.

SGS3 would be less sensitive to scratching :D

Humans...

Seriously. Asking the question "Who does that kind of stuff" is dumb.

I see dummies every day. High functioning morons. That's the society we live in...

We live in an effed up world and some jack hole scratching a phone is superfluous to me.

Your use of "superfluous" sort of puts you in that category.

Keep it up, apologists.

The place you're going to find the eventual wear and tear is not on the back, but rather as the photo shows, on the chamfered edges.

The 4S is looking pretty good right about now.

I stopped reading when I saw 'then' when trying to show contrast between things. Okay not really, but I wish I would have.

I think it's pretty funny that the ifixit teardown points out scratches on the chamfer on their brand new out of the box phone.

This news does concerns me as I randomly put keys and coins with my iphone 4s (white). either I get a case or have a special pocket only for iphone.

Not a big issue but I just need to be more careful for iphone 5(black) than iphone 4s(white)

I'm sorry... but this being on front page news is ridiculous. Someone keys an object to scratch it, and that's news? Guess what, if I take a key to the front of my Thunderbolt Display it will scratch it. If I take a key to my Macbook Air it will scratch it. If I take a key to the side of my truck it will scratch it. The guy that did it is a member of MacRumors. If I ran the site, I think I'd ban him for illegal activity.... otherwise what you are doing is promoting it and giving attention to something that is vandalism and illegal.

ORLY? See quote below.

A friend has had to return hers this morning, fresh out of the box, scratched to *****

Umm... I think you may have failed miserably at that...

Quite possibly :D, however, if you take all of the rabid fanboys or people who just won't look at things objectively, I have also failed to inject any sort of logic into this thread either. See below quote for verification:

1. Taking a hammer to the touchscreen affects it negatively

2. Inserting the new iPhone 5 in a 600 degree oven is not good

3. Dropping the phone from 35,000 feet is detrimental

4. Placing the phone in the center of a campfire is conducive to noticeable excess heat

5. Swimming with the iPhone 5 in your swim trunks increases moisture inside the phone

Logic and reality:

YES all things scratch when there is a hard force applied to them. Anodized Aluminum is NO different in this respect, so yes, rough use should reflect this logic.

However, logic also dictates that if a product is done well and appropriately, which in this case it is not. Putting on/taking off a case should NOT cause wear damage to the device, NOR should people be getting damaged goods as soon as they open the box.

To quote a lame Blackberry tactic....

WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Oh here we go, first we have excuses for the Maps fk up, now all the fan kiddies wanna make excuse for the shoddy durability that has always been a trait of iPhones. Apple has always been about form over function. We all know this. We also know the fan kiddies just don't care. When android phones were thinner and lighter, it meant cheap phones that were too light. Because iPhone users here have repeatedly said they want to be able feel the phone in their pocket. They didn't want a phone that was so thin and light that it felt like it would snap in half. But NOWWWWW....they love thin, light phones. Because it's just so unreal and amazing.
