Most cliche's are cliche's because they are true. So - do you disagree that competition is good?

Of course I don't disagree. I just would have thought it was something that was universally known by now...
And honestly, does this thing look like competition?

Haha, I love it how the competitors are making iPad clones now after bagging them so hardcore on the initial ipad release saying oversized iphone useless etc etc and now they are jealous of apple. I love it how all the competitors are stealing apple design (or at least trying) I even notice the HUD background behind the text is very Apple like. Incoming law suits me thinks lol blackberry. Playbook is a silly name too and also looks too much like playboy lol. uhhh there is other ipad clones out there by dell as well i think or hp dunno dont care about them but i do know ive seen images of the others apart from this and they just as ugly :p

Don't ask me. I don't care if it is or isn't. I find the whole thread hilarious. Ask those that are posting as if they feel threatened or desire to be "technobullies" by attacking something they haven't even used LOL

It's a little sad how much this resembles the iPad. I mean, it looks like they did the maximum allowable amount of copyright infringement.

It's stupid huh. companies bag apple so much then they go and copy them lol

1.) There are alot if people saying "why pay for a 7" screen when you can have a 9.7" screen" . In regards to this I say, it's the same deal with the 13" MBP vs the 11" MBA there are basically the same price... You're paying for the lightness and portability. If this thing is more usable and smaller than a iPad I might be interested! (just like I was interested in the new MBA until I realized my Sony TZ is just as powerful, just as light as the new MBA but with a DVD-rw drive! and 3G service! )

2.) RIM made a mistake naming this thing a "playbook" that is dumb. Something like 70% of blackberry users are in biz they don't want to bring a 'playbook' to a meeting! That just seems childish!

It's made and designed by RIM, therefore it is bound to be garbage. How do I know this? I own a 9550.

Maybe they should have used the designer of the ZUNE and will ask their employees to throw the ipad into a garbage can onsite.

History repeats itself:)

No one has even seen on of these yet. Their demo video of their tablet was a CGI generated tablet showing how they would like it look.

They float this crap to try to keep people from buying the iPad for xmas and to try to keep corporations from buying Apple also.

The odds they will have a shipping product, bad or good, by then end of the first quarter of next year is a pipe dream...

RIM demoed the PlayBook at Adobe Max near the end of October. This isn't CGI, this is the actual device.

The initial reveal at DevCon wasn't very good, and caused a lot of people to believe the device wasn't very far along in development, however, the demo at Adobe Max shows that the device is farther along than many people initially thought.

Ahh but this tablet has many features that the iPad doesn't. To me the choice isn't that clear.

Personally, I think it will come down to if they're a BB user, they will consider this because it fits with their BB. If they are not... it will be the iPad or maybe one of the new Android Tablets. More are coming besides this and the market will get cluttered very quickly. But again... Apple is leading the way and are the ones to beat.

I would imagine that a business user wouldn't mind bring a playbook. But I won't speak for anyone. Playbook references what sports teams have (and also sales people, etc) which lays out their plans and possibilities. I've heard worse names. I personally don't care for iPad.

Is that a dock and coverflow? Let the lawsuits begin!

I was thinking it looked like the Mission Control UI (where you can see all your full-screen apps in a row), but now that you mention it, perhaps this is what you get when Cover Flow and Mission Control hook up. :) I actually think the GUI looks quite attractive and usable. Not sure why so many people are bashing it.

Must say, I like the fact they seem to have put more work into the front end/desktop. For me, it's one of the iPad's weakest points. Sure, a desktop with icons on is fine for a tiny screen on a phone or mp3 player. But really, a 10" screen with 1024x768 really deserves better use made of it. When you actually think what could be done as a user interface.

I'm hoping in time Apple will realise this and produce something a bit more advanced than a blown up iPhone screen. Especially with multi-taking, how about a scrolling ribbon as shown in the blackberry photo that shows you mini versions of all the apps frozen that you can jump to.

I agree. Like I said, it's a lot like the top half of the Mission Control interface demoed in the Lion preview. Surely they can feed that idea back into the iPad — basically screenshots of all your running (multi-tasking) apps. I imagine they will do something like that eventually.

As a developer, you should understand that it is the whole point of having full screen apps. A user can only interact with one program at a time anyway. You cannot use two apps at once. This is why apple offers background streaming and background processing of longer jobs/downloads as they are not things that require constant user interaction.

Yeah, I agree with your points.

I'm just saying that something like Expose (on the Mac) or the "panel" that the Playbook and WebOS devices which let you peak at the Apps you have open would make a big difference in user perception.

I'm not suggesting Apple iOS go to a windowed operating system with 5 or 6 apps running on a single (small) screen. That's a mess on most desktop operating systems as it is.

The press release should have said: For $499, the same price as the iPad, we will introduce a tablet with a lack of apps, smaller screen and an inferior UI only to be blown out the water by the superior hardware and refinement not only of the existing iPad, but the iPad 2 due about the same time we launch. Thank you.

Lots of anti-everythingthat'snotApple fanboys in this thread. Geez people, can't you give this even the slightest of chances?

RIM is a powerful company and will remain to be around for years. I'll give you a hint. They're in Canada, not the USA.

Declining sales and no new product on the horizon is hardly a good thing.

It's not over for the competition.

Does Android mean anything to you?

Oh please. Android will decline if the iphone moves beyond ATT in the US. Luckily for the competition Apple won't be doing this until 2012 at least.

Now call me a fanboy and get it out of your system.

Exactly.

But it wouldn't surprise me if Apple when they show off the next iPad they go like $449 for the base model.

It would surprise anyone who's paid attention to their business plan and have noted that they don't do price changes with new products. You might see a lower price for an older generation - but the new device with have the same entry point (or worst case - higher which is unlikely)
