Interesting. I wonder whether this is the whole picture. Definitely sounds intimidating for Apple though, loosing one of their USPs.
Also Google's Pixel 4 is rumored to launch with a competitive 3D facial unlocked system in October.

In my opinion most Android OEMs don't have a Face ID like feature on their mainstream flagships because of costs. Optical under display sensors should be cheaper and most users don't have any problems with these sensors.
Also I think Apple can't use an under display fingerprint sensor because of 3D Touch. This is the reason we are hearing rumors about Apple planning to ditch 3D touch.

I really can’t see them going backwards like this.

They are not going back. They are giving people a choice. A very large portion of the market will prefer an under glass ultrasonic reader. It will also have benefits for that will be able to be incorporated into Apple's Suite of growing Health Monitoring Features. You don't have to use it, as the article clearly indicates both methods will be available. Apple has been monitoring the development of ultrasonic under glass readers for the past two years, and has been involved in some development. This will make the Apple Phone (new name by then) significantly more appealing to a larger customer base. :apple:

You seriously think moving to FaceID from TouchID was falling behind? Quite the opposite, it was a massive leap forward in biometrics.

Nobody said it was a move backwards bud, please do not put words in my mouth.

Many us wanted BOTH to co-exist in iPhones as it does in some Androids.

Options!

So Face ID was a temporary solution until they could figure out the display for Touch ID?

FaceID, as introduced in the iPhone X, was a technology demonstrator/evaluator of sorts, needed to pursue and develop Apple's large push into AR. It's also a great phone unlocking and authenticator device.

In an interview can’t remember what guy said it but he said “once they saw faceID could work they dumped touchID” or some words like that. Jeff I think said it.

I took what he said to mean they were constrained by time and couldn’t get underscreen touchID to work fast enough for the X release so went with faceID. His words are very specific and leaves the possibility open that time was against them. They/apple never really said they dumped Touch ID.

Odds of a random unlock with FaceID: 1 in 1,000,000

Odds of a random unlock with TouchID: 1 in 50,000

Odds of a random unlock with FaceID and TouchID ( P(A) and P(B) with two mutually exclusive events is P(A) * P(B) ): 1 in 50,000,000,000

Nice

How's it going backwards if they're going to offer both options which has never been done before on the iPhone. Can't go back to somewhere that has never existed.

Not against face ID, but would like to still have the fingerprint ID option.

I would gladly welcome both. Although, I’ve grown to love Face ID, especially using the gen 2 with iOS 13 improvements, Touch ID would be nice as well.

What they should consider is giving people the option of requiring both Face ID and Touch ID for some things. This would help to increase security.

Alternatively, they could tighten up the parameters on both and if iOS wasn't sure if it matched, then it could require the other.

Is it me or do most rumors as of late reveal more stuff about later generations of hardware? I don't think I like it, just give me rumors of the next generation only, the rest is too intangible.

Add in a 6 digit passcode and it would be even better.

I'm fine with 1 in 1,000,000. :)

"Best of all worlds." Yeah, I guess. Since I love Face ID and find it far more convenient and less finicky than Touch ID... For me the "flat on the table" scenario would be the only improvement, and it still would require me to reach out to touch. I reach out to touch (well, lift) when my phone is flat on the table, so one gesture vs. another gesture.

It'll be more interesting to learn people's behavior when the iPhone setup process requires registering both face and touch. How many will skip one or the other, how many will take the time to do both?

Someone mentioned that he prefers Face ID when wearing gloves, but Touch ID when wearing his helmet with dark visor. Sounds like a biker. Don't they often wear gloves and helmet at the same time?

And those who are literally gloating that the "Face ID is superior" people are wrong... This is a rumor, so if being right is so important to you, maybe you should save your dance on the grave until there's actually someone in the grave.

Been reported by Mark Gurman and Ming Chi Kuo. Have look how often they publish something that doesn't happen. Gurman in particular has an outstanding record.

Plus the ultrasonic underscreen TouchID is a different technology that is much more secure than the old format.

TouchID is also better for those who need to have their phone cameras taped over at work.

I'd love if Macrumors added a feature to filter out rumors from basic news, and then the rumors to rumors for 2020, rumors for 2021 and etc.

Otherwise, for now, you can't escape them. You either will have to face all of them or stop reading altogether.
