I like the idea of dual authentication (or lets say enable on specific apps Banks, 1Password etc).
Does the under the glass finger print stuff work well? I thought I head mixed stuff on how that worked.

I love the face scan/fingerprint other companies offer. Face is not that secure but incredibly convenient for casual security, an intentional press of a print when you actually want to do something important - like a transaction, or acces a banking app. Makes sense to me.

Do you have any personal/literal examples of how Face ID is ‘not that secure’ from your own experience? Because the way I see it, there’s _no_ one that can unlock my phone with Face ID, even though Apple did admit there’s a small chance if you have someone that looks like you, but we all know that’s highly unlikely unless you have a twin.

And I’m not picking on your post, but face ID is highly secure, there’s not one hesitation that I would worry about someone potentially unlock my phone if that attempted it.

FaceID is so awkward, TouchID is definitely better in all but a few situations.

if we are speaking about a really "anywhere" TouchID, I'm ok with that. Current in-display solutions are a joke.
I agree. All of the current in-display fingerprint sensors are in one specific place on the screen. I don't think Apple will do in-display TouchID until its an "anywhere" TouchID.

How about firing the person at  who is responsible for bringing a notch screen into the iPhone X and started the trend of ugly triple-lens for the rear of iPhone. What’s even more stupid is that the boss of  blatantly accepted abysmal design for its flagship product.

Been reported by Mark Gurman and Ming Chi Kuo. Have look how often they publish something that doesn't happen. Gurman in particular has an outstanding record.

Yeah, they do have a great record. I was commenting on social behavior - the kind of emotion some folks have invested in the "superiority" of fingerprint scanning.

Face ID and Touch ID reduce the friction caused by the need/desire to securely lock the contents of our devices. Both are Teflon compared to the sandpaper of unlocking with a passcode. We're reduced here to arguing which non-stick coating is superior, or whether a mixture of both will be superior to either one on its own. Making that distinction just doesn't seem to justify the kind of emotion some here are expressing.

Happy as I am with Face ID on my iPhone X, I certainly wouldn’t have a problem with Apple introducing Touch ID that worked almost anywhere on the screen. Always good to have a Plan B!

While I would like to see both FACE ID and TOUCH ID in an iPhone there is no substantiation for this story. I’d like to see a source or even a leaker associated with this story
This is purely speculation at this point

Yeah maybe. I can manage with either or honestly because I have done with the iPhone X for nearly two years now.

I do miss the fingerprint scanner at times though. It’s great when the phone is on a desk to just be able to unlock the phone without picking it up/leaning awkwardly over the phone.

Remember when people on here were proclaiming that Touch ID was dead Apple had decided that Face ID was a better solution and everybody should just deal with it?

When in reality they didn't want to use Qualcomm tech and couldn't figure out how to do it themselves :D

It isn't just about the tech, the problem is patents. Which is why I said even if all 3G / 4G patents were free you will likely still need to negotiate patents deal with Qualcomm.

I am pretty sure the In-Screen solution has been tested way before the settlement, now they can finally use it.

Oh Yes..
Can’t wait to ditch the annoying Face ID for good.
Under Display Touch ID ftw.

you mean like removing 3d touch and replacing it with a simple "hold"?

And on a side note, get rid of the flashlight and camera buttons on the home screen!!! I am constantly accidentally activating them just by trying to put my phone (Xr) in my car armrest. Raise to wake + buttons + no 3D Touch = PIA.

Except it’s not the same thing: 3D Touch was faster and software can never be as fast as the only way it can distinguish between a simple tap and a prolonged tap is that the latter is… prolonged.

Considering how much an iPhone costs they can afford it. Others can.

Software haptic touch could be as fast or faster than 3D touch. All it is is a long press. It's purposely slowed down for a reason so people don't accidentally trigger it. Many never knew it existed. Heck, many don't even know control center exists. I get looked at like a magician when I invoke control center to show people how to easily toggle things.....even younger people.

I would suggest that "touch anywhere on the screen" FPS is probably not the right way to go. You'd accidentally unlock too often. I think it would be better to have a largish area, maybe 2" x 2", set in the bottom half of the screen. At the size, you will never miss, but you have options for touching other parts of the screen without unlocking.

I'm using a Galaxy S10+ right now. The FPS is perfect, the 95% of the time that I touch the small area correctly. Even a 1" x 1" area would solve that issue.

ok, but what is one supposed to do in the winter months? :)
and although the passcode is faster than face id, it requires you to put it in, while face id usually completes its process by the time i lift the phone up(which is where one would begin to enter the passcode).

My gloves have touch sensitive areas. If you don't have those, and you are wearing gloves, you can't do anything with your phone even if you unlocked it. It takes my X up to 2 seconds for Face ID. Far longer than it takes for me to type a password.

You must be a very specific case because in no way shape or form is typing in my passcode faster than Face ID. I think the only time I have ever had to type in my passcode is when I first turn my phone on.

It takes up to 2 seconds for Face ID. If it doesn't recognize me it may take up to 10 seconds. Gloves or not I can type my password in under a second.

i do, but i found that they didn't work too well on the home button.
well it was mentioned that the xs is slightly faster at facial recognition. so i'm guessing it's only going to improve.

Not true. Huawei Mate P20 Pro have 3D (not 2D that most of Android phones use) Facial Recognition. Their system detects 30k dots on face (creating by dot projector), just like iPhone. There were some security issues, but it was software problem solved by update. To be honest Face ID also had worse and better moments (e.g. glass with tape unlock). Huawei have fingerprint scanner as well.
Fair point. But let’s be honest, there isn’t anything secure about Huawei in the first place.

Is this the same Bloomberg that said Supermicro devices Apple used were hacked by the Chinese and then everyone said they were full of it?

Yet the Chinese have been exploiting an iOS “loophole” to target Uyghur Muslims.

I can't see a negative in this. Seems like best of both worlds. Like Face ID? Perfect. Like Touch ID? Perfect. This should be a great thread with no complaining!

FaceID: I don’t like the notch or need animojis—sorry.
