I'm expecting new names, just as with the transition to Intel (bye bye PowerBook/Power Mac/eMac, hello MacBook/Mac Pro/iMac). Maybe it'll be as simple as "MacBook AS" or "AS MacBook," but it could be something entirely different. The question is to what degree Apple wants to say, "This is different." The greater the distinction they want to make, the more likely it'll be a series of all-new names.

Will the first AS portable be similar in configuration to the 12" MacBook? Very likely, but I suspect it'll have an all-new name. They probably don't want it to be associated with the under-powered CPU the first generation of MacBooks were known for, and hopefully it'll have more than one USB-C port - both good reasons to disassociate with the MacBook name.

Pretty positive they won't change names, for what reason, those names are Iconic.

I'm on the fence in terms of purchasing a 2020 13" 10th generation but at this point in time it's probably best to wait. At any rate costs might come down for current gen.

I can see the re-introduction of the macbook small and portable with redesign while keeping the same current form factor of the 13-inch pro but offering ASi and Intel 11th gen tiger lake sku as the final x86_64 processor... with perhaps an updated screen like the 16-inch.

It would be nice if Apple released the actual roadmap of specific lineups, but that's not very Apple like to do so unless they're ready to sell. If I knew they were only targeting the "low-end" and non pro lineup then my decision would be easy to make, unfortunately who knows 100%.

which I am assuming the new designs as well.
If they’re shipping this year, I think we’d have seen new cases if there were any.
With Apple I noticed the 3rd gen stuff is the refined product.
Later is better, 6th gen of the watch is when it’s REALLY done, same with other products.
Maybe it'll be as simple as "MacBook AS" or "AS MacBook," but it could be something entirely different.
The invite will say “Quick AS”. :)

I hope they keep at least one version of the Pro with an x86 option for awhile. Does anyone know if there are any drawbacks to it being SoC?

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman today reported that the first Mac with a custom Apple Silicon processor will be announced as part of "another launch" in November.
Nothing really new, we here at MacRumors have discussed that rumor multiple times. It's really more of is it November or start of 2021 that is the real question? All of us want the first Apple Silicon computer to be really cool, not rushed.

Im getting the first ones. I know about first gen products, but I am so happy with my iPad Pro that I am confident it will meet or exceed my expectations. It will also be my first Mac .
My 2018 iPad Pro is already better than any Intel Windows laptop I have ever owned.

I don’t know, I’m just not sold on the Apple Silicon just yet. Maybe it will make sense when I see the actual products and what they can do, but for now it just takes me back to the PPC era. Back then Apple computers were niche, cumbersome and unsupported. It wasn’t until the Intel era where we actually got full support from app developers, feature parity and for the first time the Mac became a viable option for enterprises (much thanks to Bootcamp and Windows support).

I loved my PowerMac G4 and iMac G5, but compatibility was horrendous during my school years.

I guess the difference today is Apples market share and the iOS App Store, with its millions of apps already available. Apple is going all in, and while I believe Apps are the future, the App Store on my iPad is not what I want on my Mac today.

Maybe I just don’t get it yet, and Apples demo will blow me away, or maybe everyone in here forgot about the PPC era by now (maybe a bit of both)! 😬

Per July WWDC keynote
"we expect to ship our first Mac with Apple Silicon by the end of this year"
That is defined as "believe that (someone or something) will arrive soon.

We shall see if it sooner or later. (November vs start of 2021) ;)

I must have missed that then...

I just had a look at WWDC 2020, not that I don't believe you, I just had to see it with my own eyes.

No idea why anyone would think otherwise. We don't need Mark Gurman chiming in with his 11th hour "information" to corroborate what anyone with common sense knows.

Next week is for iPhone.

Macs will get their own small event next month.

I can remember at least one iPhone event where MacBook Pros were introduced at the same time.

Probably. And my betting is it will be similarly powerful to the current top end MacBooks Pro

This comment changed my thinking a bit. I’ve been thinking that Apple would want to come out of the gate showing performance to put everyone’s concerns to rest. But seeing my own thinking echoed back to me has me reconsidering. The problem with that approach is that it would overhang the market on their entire product line.

For example, if they really do put out a lower end MB that matches their high end performance it risks causing everyone to wait for ARM before they buy the higher end product.

I’m starting to think it more likely that they go small with a focus on portability and battery life. The downside would be that his reinforces people’s concerns that ARM is a chip for portable devices rather than heavy workloads. The advantages though is that those people will continue buying the existing high end products and it also give Apple more time to finish higher performance processors.

I can imagine a 12” MB using an iPad chip, but not a top end iMac. I suspect they’ll eventually have dedicated parts for their performance products.

I think your logic is sound, but the problem with the low end approach is persuading developers to migrate quickly. Apple strategy may depend on chip availability. If they can build a lot of high end machines in 2021 then they may go higher end in November.

I just want the AS iMac 24". I have a computer that is dying and needs replacing soon, very very soon. Please be by the end of year!

I am not convinced you know what the word “just” means. This isn’t how it’s used I am afraid.

If you're an engineer working on this new Mac, then yes, it's common sense. Just like it's common sense to someone working at NASA that you need to be careful handling Hydrazine since its a hypergolic mixture.

you double quote the same thing...we think you just don;t know how to quote somebody :)
He just needs an iMac arm, nothing else. Stay on topic and let the teaching for somebody else

See my former post, I thought they said this year, he said We expect our first mac with Apple silicon by the end of this year.
*I thought they would be released this year (100%) too until a poster pointed me to the above

I must have missed that then...
