The most annoying part for me is all the products could have been showed off in a 2 hour event back in September if they removed all the unnecessary fluff from the videos and then said what dates they will be available from. Its driving me nuts waiting to see these Apple Silicon Macs and Apple just seem obsessed with dragging this process out in cringe videos you need a political correctness and inclusion bingo card to watch along with.

I'm expecting new names, just as with the transition to Intel (bye bye PowerBook/Power Mac/eMac, hello MacBook/Mac Pro/iMac).
The iMac existed before the eMac and continued long after it.

Maybe it'll be as simple as "MacBook AS" or "AS MacBook," but it could be something entirely different. The question is to what degree Apple wants to say, "This is different."
Which is very little, if at all.

November makes sense based on the iPhone event being October... although the first thought I had when i saw “Hi, Speed” was Apple Silicon. The iPhone is their flagship product though.

Hopefully the laptops will be shipping before the end of the year though.

I predict a flurry of buying the likes of the RTX 3080. Going to be big queues.

I think it depends.

1)Most Mac buyers are not tech savvy...and certainly not super technical to know the realities of changing to a completely new CPU architecture.

2)As long as the top 20 MacOS apps are available at launch (not months later), it will help sales. Apple already has some (all?) of their apps ready for the ARM architecture. Microsoft Office will need to be ready to go. So will Adobe products. Nobody is going to (willingly) buy a computer that can't run the most-used software.

#2 is the biggest factor IMO. If the ARM Mac can't run much software on Day 1, it will be returned to the store or simply not purchased in the first place.

For example, if they really do put out a lower end MB that matches their high end performance it risks causing everyone to wait for ARM before they buy the higher end product.
This fits into my expectation that the reason why, for the VERY first time, the “Apple Switching” rumors included Intel this go ‘round is because Intel HAS to get contracts from their vendors well ahead of time. It was early 2019 that the Intel rumor came out which would align with when you’d expect those PO’s to be discussed. I wouldn’t doubt that Apple expects to sell fewer high end Macs for a time and that it’s accounted for in their manufacturing plans.

And anyway, anyone that NEEDS a portable Mac with 4 thunderbolt ports RIGHT NOW won’t have an AS solution for awhile. However, I don’t doubt that some of those will likely still purchase this one just to have more flexibility when on the go... especially if it’s as good at handling things like 4k video as the iPad Pro is.

I wonder how Gurman could possibly figure out the timing of a release / launch of a new AS Mac like he is here - it’s almost as if he’s got insider info. How else could he have figured this out. I mean, if you eliminated December from the equation, because Apple is not likely to launch anything in December, and we’re already in October, that leaves November as the only poss...wait, maybe it is easy to guess when they’ll launch whatever it is they’re going to launch.

Separately, as much as I’m excited to see whatever it is Apple does release for a new Apple Silicon computer, I’m actually more interested in what they’re going to do in updating the iPad Pro 12.9” with newer A14X and 5G chips. Given how much I love my 2018 12.9” iPad Pro, the new chips, and maybe a new mini-LED screen could make the iPad Pro more of beast than it already is.

With Apple's quality history I would not want the first one, unless I could afford to use it as a door stop.
Apple is not releasing a new form factor but rather changing the internals of one of their existing laptops. Apple already has had years to make their own ARM silicon for iPhones and iPads. One could argue that they ultimately spend much more money on quality for those chips as there are millions of devices and billions of dollars in penalty if they get it wrong. They will use a variation of an iPhone chip for a laptop, so this is not likely to suffer the same quality fate as laptop designs that are new. Moreover Sir J. Ive is no longer the one steering the design boat over there. The abandonment of the crap keyboard suggests that design for design sake is not the driving force at Apple anymore.

They have to switch soon otherwise only idiots would by an Apple laptop right now, not knowing that in a few short years Apple will obsolete their computer.

Obviously the first will be a low end macbook
[automerge]1602262847[/automerge]

Probably shipping in December

I'm not so sure it's ... that ... obvious?

If Apple launches out of the gate with anything that can possibly be seen as "Slow" or "Compromised", that stigma will stick to every Apple Processor based computer from then on.

I'd think a 14" MacBook paired with a 20"-24" iMac will be first? Speeds will have to be at least equal to the current top spec Intel 27" iMac and Intel 16" MacBook Pro. I'd hope that the battery life of the 14" will make the current battery life of the Intel 16" look hilariously low?

This is a huge gamble by Apple? They have to come out swinging? "Low End" should not be a part of that? If it is? Yikes!

And, yes, expect Apple vs Intel "Bake offs" to be part of the announcement. Everything old will be new again. I'm waiting for Tim to bring back the "Toasted Bunny" too. All the "Millennials" love retro advertising, right? ;-)

I must have missed that then...

I just had a look at WWDC 2020, not that I don't believe you, I just had to see it with my own eyes.

I use the keynote transcript from rev.com, but when you are hear/see the well done WWDC keynote presentation, you do usually want to examine all the carefully written comments after the fact to gleen any additional information you might have missed. Particularly concerning this Apple Silicon transition. All of us are super anxious concerning any aspects of this.

All we have to go by is A14 bionic speed tests with iPad Air 4 and DTK performance, its maddening when you can't look at what's coming. :D

Spot on. I can’t even bring myself to watch reviews or get excited by any of Apple’s current MacBook Pros, Air’s or iMacs, because it would be like buying used at this point. In fact, for anyone needing a new computer RIGHT now, they’d be better buying used to save money, perhaps flip it once the AS Macs hit, where you won’t take such a big financial hit from depreciation. Obviously this doesn’t include people who need to run their Macs as Windows machines, but those people will see a benefit in lower pricing on Intel Macs in the coming 18 months.

Do yourself a favor. Avoid the first generation of all Apple silicon Macs. I’d much prefer a tried but true Intel model than first generation hardware with new silicon. You’ll be relying on Rosetta to run a ton of apps. Let others be the beta testers. Wait for generation two. You’ll thank me later.

Wouldn't bother responding to Theyayarealivin, their main goal is to be the very first low effort reply and then move on to the next post.

Oh, it's a troll, thanks for the heads up, come to think of, I have noticed her fast posting on all kind of new topics probably fishing for likes etc. Thanks for confirming it. From now on, I just ignore it(yes IT).

Thanks for the link, did a quick CMD-F search, found it in seconds, the WWDC Youtube video search wasn't that much slower, I knew it had to be in the end but the above is much faster.

As for the "Expect", I do think we'll see a AS mac this year, would sell a ton just before the holidays.

I will be switching to Apple Silicon Macs. Specifically want an Apple Silicon Mac Mini.

Me too. My late 2012 just became Vintage and will be Obsolete in the not to distant future I'm guessing. I was going to upgrade from my 8 y.o. mini this year but will until the new machines are released. Hopefully next year as long a my current mini can hang in there a little longer.

I have the same Mini, in the same position, want a new Mac Mini but not going to buy an Intel one, but we might have to wait a while, Mini's aren't really priority to Apple.

There's actually not that much wrong with the 2012 MM, Graphics is holding it back, mine is upgraded with 16GB RAM and an SSD.

I was hoping for 14 inch MacBook Pro, but makes sense to start with low end MacBook 12 inch
Judging by the performance reports I’ve seen, whichever model launches with AS, it won’t be a low end in terms of performance. It is looking like an A14/A14x laptop could surpass most of the MacBook Pro models out there now.

Feel Apple is taking a backwards step switching to Apple silicon.
No disrespect but I think at this point since Apple has reached well over 2 trillion dollars in valuation and one of the top largest companies worldwide most people will agree that Apple knows what they are doing. Unless you're inside their labs or R&D centers then you're making some wild assumptions.

Ah, the Make America White Again response.

There's always at least one in each thread.

Mmm doubtful it ships before 2021 unless Apple just want Rosetta only Apps on it.
Since the AS Macs will run Big Sur, they will quickly have most apps recompiled and available. Most software running on modern libraries can be recompiled and running on AS will minimal rework. We already saw versions of Adobe Suite and Microsoft Office running natively on AS in the demo. Even the apps that they demoed running on Rosetta seemed to be fast enough to be useful. If you need Windows that is a different story, but most of us don’t.
