Bloomberg: iOS 15 to Bring Redesigned iPad Home Screen, Updated Lock Screen, New Notification and Privacy Options

I don’t know if macOS is coming to iPad so much as the iPad theoretically should be able to run any app the M1 Macs can run. This is huge for Lightroom and Photoshop users like my wife. It would be neat to see macOS available on the iPad when docked. Other than the different interface (Touch vs Pointer), why wouldn’t the new iPad Pros be able to run macOS? I would love to run macOS on my iPad Pro when attached to my Magic Keyboard then return back to iPadOS when off.

I totally agree, this would be super neat, but it still might take a while to achieve. As others have mentioned, iPadOS 15 will need to run well on anything from iPad 8 to the latest Pro. Otherwise Apple would need to fork out a separate iPadOS Pro. 😉 The way I see it, the new M1 iPads will serve as a “proof of concept” products, while the software will lag behind for a while.

MacRumors:

The company is planning a new feature that will allow users to set different notification preferences, such as if the phone makes a sound or not, depending on their current status.

Please make an option available to automatically make notifications silent when the missus is nearby. Just in case BAE messages me. Thank you, Apple!

Just give os macOS for our new iPads M1

With an M1 now powering the new iPad Pros, hopefully there will be some new features to take advantage of that power for those users.

I imagine it'll be more along the lines of what they're doing for iOS apps on Mac, in reverse. Allowing a developer to mark their Mac app to be available for install on an iPad.

Take the handcuffs off, Apple. You just created a small, portable iMac. Widgets aren’t gonna cut it.

Seems to me the leak is well calculated - They just announced a beast of an iPad Pro. Reviewers are probably getting devices as we speak. I can predict that the main negative feedback will be OS limitations. Hinting to changes in iPadOS home screen does provide with free publicity in review videos without spoiling anything

Idk why someone is giving a thumbs down.

They just took their mac specific ARM chip and put it in an ipad. Anyone who doesn't believe that macos isn't coming to the iPad is either insanely ignorant or oblivious at this point.

Hopefully iPadOS 15 brings some bigger changes than customized Home screen.

Yeah I agree. Apple’s hardware is the best I’ve seen it, probably ever. From the iPhones to iPad lineup, to the M1 Macs, Watch, AirTag, etc. Now time for the software to catch up on the iPad.

I hope iPadOS 15 is more than just parity with iOS widget support. All the iPad Pros released since 2018 have been held back by the os and not the hardware.

Please Apple turn iPadOS a real productivity operating system. We need more than incremental changes to iPadOS this year.

All of this x2... iPad OS needs to have an overhaul to include the abilities an M1 device provides.

Does iPadOS support multiple users already? I don't own one, but it seems only logical to do so, and it's been requested for a long time. And now, since iPads are more powerful than ever.

As for macOS, I think there are many areas of improvement, if only to catch up features available on iOS. Like more granular customizations to notifications (such as choosing specific sound alerts for specific apps) or to specific contacts (specific sounds through iMessage of FaceTime). And, well, having the same Clock app than iOS, with the ability to set alarms, see time zones, etc.

I like the idea of a privacy menu that gathers what every app is doing.

The other more boring explanation is that using the M1 chip in the ipad was probably cheaper than designing a separate A14X chip. Apple now gets to recycle the same M1 chip design across their MBA, MBP, Mac mini, imac and iPad Pro lines.

Apple will likely continue to find ways of bringing existing macOS features to the ipad in a manner that makes sense for a touch-centric device, rather than simply load a desktop OS onto a tablet.

An example would be like how they brought the dock to the ipad with iOS 11, but integrated it with multitasking. Or drag and drop, while allowing you to mass-select multiple files by tapping on them in succession (because click-drag didn’t exist on iOS).

I am willing to bet that we will never see macOS as it exists on the current Macs come to the ipad.

I have only 2 main gripes with iPadOS which stop me from switching from Macbook:

1. Inability to output multiple audio, e.g. playing youtube WHILE listening to music
2. Inability to add music files to music library. Around 20% of music i have is from sources like Bandcamp so when i add the music it shows alongside Apple Music files which is super convenient.

It's not the home screen that holds iPadOS back though is it (though I agree it's not great right now). It's its multitasking capabilities.
Maybe it's a redesign that allow for better multi-tasking ? :)

A big difference between iPadOS and MacOS is that on the Mac, you stay on the home screen and have a bunch of floating windows, while on the iPad you pretty much can only launch apps full screen. You don't have to bring up MacOS on the iPad to have the same capacity. Just like with the clever integration of the trackpad and magic keyboard, I am sure they can find a way to make this happen while keeping things very simple and touch friendly. Weirdly enough, Widgets on iPadOS 14 were stupidly limited and lazy compared to what they could have been. Maybe they had something bigger cooking for this year?

This is definently what I hope they do as it really would make the iPad Pro a useful device to many people who needed a mac before

no everyone should buy their own iPad!

What's so unrealistic about turning a device with mac hardware into a mac when connected to a dock? No need to reinvent the wheel. Just take the handcuffs off.
Because most iPad doesn’t have M1? If people want macOS they can buy MBA which is more or less the same price.
No doubt both OS will be merged *somewhat* but I think it’s much easier to say like you said than execute. Certainly won’t happen this WWDC or even next few years.

The ONE thing that I want about notifications is grouping notifications SOUNDS...I will like that my device doesn't play a notification sound for the same app if the notifications are less than say, 5 seconds apart. It's so annoying. And bad implemented too. Sometimes iOS doesn't have the time to play the notification sound completely, and it plays against over the first one and so on. Is like the device is regurgitating.
