Apple, if you're listening, let us connect watch faces to specific situation profiles. Wouldn't it be great if we could have different work and home watch faces (for example) without the need to manually change between them?
Can’t you do this with shortcuts already? You can change the watch face via shortcuts, so just set up a location automation for it?

I expect you probably wanted more than just watch face change, but probably want to start using a different example given you can technically already do it 😜

This all sounds good, but I hope the priorities are: real multitasking (floating windows, unlimited instances of a single app, gestures that make sense), a usable file system, real external display support... the basics to make iPadOS a viable replacement for a mac.

I had no idea you could change watch faces with Shortcuts! Thanks!

I have a knack for buying a new device only to be let down by my own expectations. I really want the new iPad Pro, but if iPadOS doesn’t make a lot of ground up on the MacOS, then I don’t really need to upgrade my 2018. Now, if I can only hold my “want” until we see what WWDC brings us...

LOL - I hear you. Splurging on an iPad Pro "hoping" that iPadOS is updated enough or pro apps are finally released that can use that massive horsepower certainly could set you up for disappointment.

The current iteration is too clunky and doesn’t take advantage of the latest a series processors, and now m1.
Multitasking on the iPad has been hampered more by the stingy amounts of RAM that Apple has included with iPads in the past, not the processor. The A12 in the base iPad can handle multitasking just fine but it needs more than the 3GB RAM that’s included to make it work and avoid apps going into suspended background mode. Same with the A14 in the Air and the limiting 4GB included in that.

The Pro doesn’t really have any software-specific features; Apple traditionally makes features for iPadOS available to every supported model (which makes sense since the base iPad is the biggest seller). Enhanced multitasking will have a hard time functioning on the base iPad’s limited RAM, so Apple might have no choice than to start adding Pro-exclusive features that can take advantage of the larger RAM amounts.

What I would really like for is for certain notifications to be marked as urgent and can break through the Do Not Disturb mode.

Right now when I go to bed my sleep routine kicks in and do not disturb kicks in and silences ALL notifications, however I would like the ability to still allow my home security notifications through as those would be kinda urgent to address, messages and social media can wait until morning.

I currently have calls allowed through Do Not Disturb as if you are calling me it’s usually pretty important, but there currently isn’t a way to mark certain apps to be allowed through, it’s either all are allowed or none are allowed.

I’m in exactly the same boat. We’ve had dodgy people moving around the site late at night recently and with Do Not Disturb on I don’t get any notifications from my security system. With Do No Disturb off all I get is no sleep. For the moment I’ve repurposed an old iOS device with just my security app on it so I can get the alerts without anything else going off.

I think I am going to wait to see what iPadOS 15 looks like. If it turns out that many of the new features, or best features require newer hardware than my 2018, I’ll upgrade to the M1 iPad Pro this summer, but if it turns out to be a more modest update but only the professional level apps (I don’t use) require the newer hardware, I’ll keep my 2018 a while longer and upgrade my 2017 MacBook Pro. I suspect there’s probably nothing in the pipeline that’s going to tax the A12X for a while yet. I’m tempted to go ahead and replace my MacBook Pro with an M1 Air with 16GB of RAM with the deals going around, and upgrade my iPad Pro next year.

great, hopefully we will finally have a way to stop notifications during gaming.

Exactly. In my mind, macOS on an iPad Pro would be a bad experience. macOS caliber APPS on an iPad though, that could be a wonderful experience. Also, I still don't get why people want to touch their laptop screens. Even when I was a daily 12.9" iPad Pro user, I almost never touched the screen or used the Apple Pencil with it when I was in laptop mode.
I don't really have any desire to touch my laptop screen. It's more that I'd like a single portable device that can function in either mode, rather than having to travel with 2 devices (and spend double the money on devices) just to have both modes available to me. When you look at it that way-- the underlying motive to not have any possible way to run Mac OS on iPad Pro is simply the financial incentive on Apple's part, whatever kind of UX spin they put on it.

Did you read this rumor? That's not what's happening.
I think 'widgets' here can mean many things.... else why would you want to have your screen only filled with widgets?

sounds to me like we will see some kind of new application launcher / windows where full apps can stay open in the home screen.

They need multi user/profile support for iPads.

Why though? Like really why?
what is truly gained by doing this?
- why would you share a $1000+ device to anyone for use over any longevity?
> when damaged will they pay for repair/cover the inconvenience?
> why can't they have their own iPad that suits their needs/usage requirements?
- how often or for how long will the other person USE the iPad in alternative user mode? This I think will weigh heavily on either 1) Does the owner really need the iPad; for less use than the other person, 2) Does the other person use the owners iPad so much they really need their own due to hindering on the owners own use.

Honestly, Android had issues initially with security when enabling multi user tablets. Look how many are left or being purchased today?

Sure I get some people want this .. and potentially need this without having to purchase a completely new iPad. I think the security for documents and how iCloud creates a sandbox will need to be adjusted.

we shall see how this comes about.

I turn off all notifications for app apps that doesn't warrant waking me up at night. So, basically, only a small handful of apps can send me notifications regardless of hours of the day. Distracted by notifications while working is the most significant loss of productivity.

Apple needs to fundamentally change how multitasking works on the iPad. The current iteration is too clunky and doesn’t take advantage of the latest a series processors, and now m1. The iPad’s multitasking interface is one of its biggest limitations in my opinion. Apple could and should implement something similar to a Samsung Dex mode for better multitasking.
I don’t think they need a complete overhaul of multitasking on iPad. For example, simple improvement concepts built on existing bricks and that keep the simplicity of the existing implementation while expanding its capabilities:
  • Implement a handle at the top of the app window when in single app view (similarly to what already exist in split screen and slideover view). Touching and dragging the app window by the handle to the side of the screen when in single app view converts the app in slideover mode on top of the springboard. Then, look at your widget on the springboard, launch spotlight, or choose an app. The new app will then launch in full screen mode under the slideover app.
  • Add a new setting page where you can choose, for each app compatible with slideover, if you want them to be launched in full screen or slideover by default
  • Display all open slideover apps in expose

The other more boring explanation is that using the M1 chip in the ipad was probably cheaper than designing a separate A14X chip. Apple now gets to recycle the same M1 chip design across their MBA, MBP, Mac mini, imac and iPad Pro lines.

Apple will likely continue to find ways of bringing existing macOS features to the ipad in a manner that makes sense for a touch-centric device, rather than simply load a desktop OS onto a tablet.

An example would be like how they brought the dock to the ipad with iOS 11, but integrated it with multitasking. Or drag and drop, while allowing you to mass-select multiple files by tapping on them in succession (because click-drag didn’t exist on iOS).

I am willing to bet that we will never see macOS as it exists on the current Macs come to the ipad.
Honestly? I would believe that before I believe macOS comes to the iPad, which I still think is in the future.

I’m leaning this way too. I’ve got a 2021 12.9 iPad Pro that’s more than sufficient for my needs. My MacBook Pro is starting to age so I am probably better off investing in an upgrade to an M1 Mac. Besides, if Apple decides to release Pro Apps for the iPad Pro, I can’t imagine they would exclude pervious gen ipad pros.
