I'm guessing "a larger broadcast message capacity" is bandwidth? As in the potential better audio quality?

EDIT: According to Engadget, that's probably not what that means. BT5 is about bringing Bluetooth up to modern standards which will then continue to be built upon. But according to BTSIG's official statement, BT5 is low energy.

Analysts are reporting that Apple is going to create their own standard called Firetooth C. Firetooth C will require a dongle to be used, even though it's a wireless technology. More will be revealed at this year's Macworld conference.

I can hear Tim Cook now: "We think our customers are really going to love it." There will be an uber slick video w/ Ives going on about how flawlessly the dongle is made. He will say "al-u-minium" at least three times. ;)

Can't wait till 2023, when Apple starts adopting this into their devices.

Airpods delayed is due to this? Apple want to adopt Bluetooth 5 on it?

You think Timmy is going to cut into those margins?

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group today announced that the Bluetooth 5 standard has been officially adopted, which means manufacturers are now able to build it into their devices.

The next-generation Bluetooth standard offers longer range, faster speed, a larger broadcast message capacity, and better interoperability with other wireless technologies.

Compared to existing Bluetooth 4.2 protocol, Bluetooth 5 offers four times the range, two times the speed, and eight times the broadcast message capacity, bringing whole home coverage and more reliable connections between connected devices.
With the debut of Bluetooth 5, SIG's Bluetooth naming convention will drop all references to version and point number going forward, simplifying marketing.

Devices that adopt Bluetooth 5 will be available within two to six months, meaning the next-generation products Apple plans to debut in 2017, including the iPhone 8, may offer Bluetooth 5 support.

Lets hope the claim of more reliable connections is true. I have alway been frustrated by pairing being such a hit and miss affair.

The improved range would be cool, but I can't imagine how doubling the speed and quadrupling the range could be a good thing for battery life.

When the iPhone 5 came out, I believe it surprised some by getting better battery life on LTE because even though it used more battery, it was able to load the data and shut off faster as well preserving it in the long run.

Nope, that's not a part at all. 2018 with the next spec 5.1

So, 4-5 key benefits cited but where is "improved wireless audio quality" which, relative to countless "the future" arguments seems to be the most important benefit of taking this step toward the future.

Surely, Bluetooth 5 addresses audio quality and audio latency issues of the existing Bluetooth standard, right?

Are those in "8X broadcast message capacity?" Else, where are they?

somehow there's still a need for Wi Fi,, but i could see a day when we all connect via Bluetooth only if the standard could only support not needing Wi-fi just for the handshaking coms..

Much as the same way Wi-fi is only needed to make a connection. Bluetooth cold do the same..

Since a encryption needs to be paired and verified anyway, it won't compromise security in any way, since the initial "hi there" can be done outside of the pairing begins before connection begins...

Well, at least now we know what the flagship feature will be for the 2021 iPhone (plus model only, of course)

Ives has always said aluminium with the the correct pronunciation, don't know people think he says it wrong

while most are excited about this i am a bit concerned about the huge range. This translates to huge possible interference between devices so very low SN ratio.

Would this be fast enough to support wireless vr headsets?

No chance. Current BT can't even send audio without a half second lag. A VR display takes about 5,000 times more data than audio and it needs to arrive in less than 10 milliseconds to minimise sickness. (Ideally less than 2ms).

Not sure if anymore detail is available but are there any new frequencies for the new specs or we will overcrowd the already crowded wifi 2.4 GHz band.

This is great, then we can finally cut the cord on all the headphones as BT5 can stream the required bitrate.
Now see how fast the adoption of BT5 will be. New iPhones and new Beats headphones, let them come.

Time to drop WiFi for Apple. Lets call it courage, right?

No, that would be a very unwise decision looking at the range differences between BT and WiFi currently.

Without a matching BT5 iPhone this would be useless for now.

Fast Bluetooth is a good thing, but only if your OS has a filesystem and proper and convenient transfer capability for all data files.

The longer range has me interested. This is huge to be further away from your device for Extended freedom.
