I can't wait to see the improvements in Bluetooth accessories... especially wireless audio.

Try P7 Wireless headphones. Really good.

Also I'd like to mention 4.2 apTX support 320 audio. However, BT 5.0 will make .flac, .lossless files available over BT, hope to see an Apple Music upgrade to this quality in the future.

Too bad my brand new MBP and iPhone 7 won't get it :(

Well - maybe it will - if Apple decide to upgrade the firmware and there are no limitations i hardware. A quick glance at the faq/specs indicates thats its "just" smarter use of the bandwidth/frequency spectrum. The 4x range i achieved by lowering the bandwidth - the target is IoT devices. Not entirely clear, but the 2x bandwidth may be done by using more channels. So you don't get 2x bandwidth AND 4x range :p

Really? This will create even more confusion in what features customers can expect if they don't have devices with the latest Bluetooth.
I mean even internal to Apple, we already have confusion from the lay consumers as to what devices support handoff etc. Then there are issues where devices don't play nice with each other, and it's more difficult to troubleshoot if there's no distinctions between versions.

I think this is why Apple decided to just develop their own solution via the W1 chip.

Dropping the version number does seem like a very strange thing to do, bit like dropping a/b/g/n and just calling it wifi.

For all you banging on about audio.. This is is all about raw performance. Four times the range, twice the speed and eight times the amount of data in broadcast messages.

Nothing new in the audio side of it... that won't come for a year or more. But will be in the software so no new hardware needed.

Apple will add this to their products in 2025....

Hmm. Apple normally add things BEFORE anyone else... they also remove obsolete tech which is why some people get pointlessly angry.

so what does this mean to me in real life use?

Also, does both accessories have to have Bluetooth 5? Like the computer AND the speaker?
because that means updating everything to gain the advantage

Is that why their computers are still running old/outdated tech?
Oh yeah its not Apple's fault, is the other's companies's fault.. My bad...

About time... Seems like 3/4 has been around forever. We've not had a bluetooth speed increase since, what, 7 years ago?

Hopefully bluetooth audio becomes usable with this.

Outdated? Apple tries to focus on user experience as a whole, not to just include a processor that has some super fast spec, but of course then burns through battery or generates too much heat. I would have thought people recognized the days of PC companies updating their products on a monthly basis because of a spec bumped processor were foolish then and remain so today.

Title should be corrected:

Bluetooth 5 With 4x Longer Range and 2x Faster Speed is Officially Approved... Still doesn't work

Ha, I laughed. But seriously, does this turn Bluetooth into a WiFi competitor?

No: "Bluetooth 5 can now transfer at 2Mbps instead of the usual 1Mbps" (wikipedia)

Bluetooth is no where near Wifi in range or speed, nor should it be. Different standard for different purposes.

for sure. I had issues with my wireless headphones today and had to use wired, it was horrible! I think if wireless charging enters the world (something better than Qi), than the days of wires is done for

That's funny. When the headphone jack was removed, the Apple apologists all claimed that BT headphones were now awesome despite evidence to the contrary.

Most people don't care about greater Bluetooth range. They want greater reliability and frankly in 2016 nearing 2017 expect BT headphones to never drop out.

Can't wait till 2023, when Apple starts adopting this into their devices.

You think Timmy is going to cut into those margins?

Really? Even knowing Apple was first to adopt Bluetooth 4 in 2011 with the iPhone 4s when the standard was released, and then again with Bluetooth 4.2 in the iPhone 6 in 2014?

And even knowing that Apple is one of seven promoter members of the Bluetooth SIG, the group that influences and defines Bluetooth standards and direction?

Or maybe the 2023 date you tossed out was just a piece of immature snark?

Will this be enough to take multi-cam home systems off our WiFi networks? (Nestcam, PiperNV, Netgear Arlo)

I've been looking at a 4-6 camera setup, but have been discouraged by sales reps to not even purchase a single camera if my Internet speeds are not FIOS level, or if I have many things connected. I fit both descriptions, with 6.0 AT&T DSL being the best in my rural area, and I have house full of Apple TV's, and mobile devices. The BestBuy rep in the camera section said they see a lot of returns because of the picture quality once people get smart cams home in real world settings.

If a base unit that controlled the cameras were 5.0 BT controlled, is the 2MB bandwidth enough to finally move these 1080P cams from WiFi to BT inside? If you had 6 cams, is that 2MB stream per cam to a conceptual BT base, or would the base divide the 2MB pipeline up between each cam like WiFi?

So the new excuse is the battery? then i highly doubt Apple will adopt BT5 any time soon since there are no improvement to battery life in BT5...

Based on history with Apple being first to introduce BT 4 in 2011 when the standard was released, with the iPhone 4s, and then again with BT 4.2 on the iPhone 6 in 2014, and, that Apple is one of the seven promoter members of the Bluetooth SIG, an organization that defines and sets Bluetooth direction for the industry, you can count on BT 5 being available in Apple's next devices.

Improvements in chip power dissipation (and thus iPhone/iPad/Watch/MB/MBP battery life) will come with reduced semiconductor fabrication node geometries.

So they can be obsolete before they launch?

Those things remind me of my failed Apple Headset purchase.
Apple_headset2.jpg

Yeah, I had all of that and it was a great package. The reception was Terrible! After all, they are great at packaging though.

Nah, Apple will wait 2-3 years for it to "mature" first, then integrate it into old CPU hardware lol..
Yeah, I think I will hold out on this being in the 8 or even the 8s. Makes me a bit more content with my 6 and shure earbuds.
