Flash isn't going anywhere. They're just serving up HTML5 video in addition to Flash video. If it detects an ipad, it'll serve up HTML5. Otherwise, for vast majority of people who still use computers, they'll get the Flash video.

Well, let me ask you something: If you were a company trying to reach the biggest audience possible and have the choice between building two websites or building just one (let's forget about IE6, those aren't people:D), Which would you choose?

The video doesn't work for me at all?

In Safari I get the 'see it in action' button but when pressed all I get is a larger jpg instead of the video.

In Firefox I don't even get the button.

*edit* Just tried in Chrome and it works, not great quality though. And also tried it on my iPhone and it works?? Strange.

while this is good, i hope people stop relying on flash for website content.

Flash can be good for games and stuff but when i just want to read about something like a new game, etc i really don't want to have to put up with some slow arse flash site that takes forever to load.

So hurry up and turn off the life support ;)

It may just be me but the video demo on the brightcove website plays in very low quality in Google Chrome, and not at all in Safari. :-(

Anyone else have this problem?

No, it plays in Safari for me.

You know, it’s a blessing when you can watch a video in HD on your old PPC MAc and it eats up just 40% of the CPU! Just how it’s damn supposed to be from beginning on!

Thanks to HTML5 the PPC Macs feel like new and yes, they’re still blazing fast for Web browsing and casual gaming (WOW, Deus Ex etc) and photo editing.

Another stake in the heart of iPhone OS h8trs. Mwhahahahaha. <cue Phantom of the Opera music>

The problem is that on a budget Windows PC that I just bought for my Aunt, a high def Flash youtube video is only going to eat up 10 to 15% of the CPU usage. People need to start considering that Adobe does have the option of improving its product, and competition is a great motivator. I really don't see html5 taking over flash. Not for years and years to come, and probably ever. In a few years with faster and cooling running PC, that 10 to 15% will most likely go down to 2% and so on, making the debate irrelevant.

vaporware

This is a press release full of vaporware. You've always been able to do this in Brightcove (get at the h264 file using their API).

It doesn't work in firefox and requires backend coding to retrieve the h264 URI.

This is not a proper solution akin to the rest of the Brightcove platform, and the whole of their player building/ad-integration does not work with this.

In other words, Brightcove thought, ooo lets release a press release for a hacked feature that will get us some PR.

So uh... where exactly did they say they were "replacing" flash?
The fact of the matter is... as much as you might think that "supporting HTML5 video" isn't "replacing" Flash, these are semantics. HTML5 video IS actually a Flash "replacement". It's NOT a competing technology like Silverlight, that they are using to reach out to Silverlight only devices. HTML5 is supported natively on a number of existing desktop web browsers and the coming IE 9. The more ubiquitous it becomes (and its going to become ubiquitous) the less relevant Flash will be. So, while it "replaces" the need for Flash support for some devices, it doesn't need to do it for others. I for one, agree with people that this move is part of an evolution that forces Adobe to look hard at its its path for Flash. People will not need it for YouTube or many mainstream video websites.

--At some point in the next couple of years, someone will literally have a new computer, and starting using the Internet without any plugins and could go a week, before they realized they might want to install the latest Flash plugin to access some website or another (as opposed to the first day). --This, is an excellent thing for users.

Very glad to see this. Flash is simply much too weighty for video content on the web. HTML5 should be used for this. This has nothing to do with Flash going away - just with Flash becoming less misused.

Good. Maybe people are beginning to realize that there is absolutely no reason why anyone should have a limited web experience, on any device, and that the obstacle should NOT be something as stupid and worthless as Adobe Flash.

The iPad will really be the straw that broke the camels back.

Everyone should try the HTML5 version of YouTube before you go out and say it is the best thing since sliced bread. I gave it a try and ended up going back to the Flash version. It was horrible on my C2D iMac which plays Flash with no issue. I also gave it a try on an old 1 Ghz PPC eMac just to see if it made a difference on an older machine with lower specs which really struggle with Flash. It seemed to jump and skip more then Flash did on the old PPC machine.

I know it is in beta form, but things need to improve because right now I don't see how it is so much better then Flash.

I wouldn't say Flash is dying but it is becoming old technology. Flash is still on 90% of websites.

And Adobe is one of Brightcove's partners.

well said, my guess both will live into the future, flash for some things and for the apple ecology html5.

either way its going to be an interesting year. :D

Strange on my system its running smooth, I sure don't want to go back. And I am using both Mac and PC with Safari. If this is how good Beta is, dam can't wait for v2.0. I can't see how Flash will be better than HTML5 even on old system, but people see what they want to see.

Well in your signature it says you have an i7 so I would assume that it will run anything smoothly. All I am saying is that I don't see the improvement and have loading issues the with HTML5 YouTube site. My iMac is a 2.4 GHz C2D with 2 GB of RAM so maybe you need more horsepower to make it run as good as it does for you. I do find however that my iMac runs all Flash based content without any issues at all so I am not sure why I would need more power for HTML5.

It is beta form so I will wait until the real deal is launched before I give my final judgement.

My sentiments exactly. Flash was never originally made for video, they just tacked it on because no one could settle on a universal web video format. Flash has always sucked at video. Now if only Apple and Mozilla could bite the bullet and support *both* OGG and h.264, then we won't have another format war that will once again leave Flash video the predominant format.

Curious why do some people here get upset when any news that is negative regarding flash comes out.

Are some of you guys shareholders in Adobe, or employees of the company? or is your job pretty much tied to Macromedia flash?

Maybe every individual's situation is different but I think have the exact same 2 year old model iMac you do with the ATI card and I've noticed a significant improvement. I've been using HTML5 since it was offered. I was able last night to run 5 or 6 YouTube iPad videos at once while having 5 or 6 apps open and viewing a TV episode on iTunes (yeah I know sounds crazy). I didn't notice any lag. Before Click2Flash I had trouble with just three videos at once.

Whoa. There's a huge nail in the Flash coffin.

Sure. You just need to explain to developers how they can write Rich Internet Applications and games like Samorost 2 with HTML5.

It just makes me sad to see that everybody seems to mistake Flash with just another stupid video format.

By the way... The WePad runs on (Open Source) Android, is not bound to a restricted AppStore and fully supports Flash 10.1. For me, that's just another nail in the iPad's coffin. Especially when you consider that many big European publishing houses already announced that they will go with the WePad and NOT with Apple.

Last time I checked Google was switching from Gears to HTML5 so I don't understand how you can't make rich web apps on HTML5. As for games, Flash won't be going away anytime soon but I'm not the type to play Diner Dash. Truth is is that, in terms of web page design and video, Flash will eventually disappear.

As for the WePad, if it is a success so be it. But I also know that Google is planning to use Chrome OS on tablets so the Android/Chrome OS platform only becomes more fractured. I've also seen early videos of battery life getting killed on an Android using 10.1. I agree with you about the App Store and is a serious problem. It is one that may prevent me from getting an iPad.

For those of yiu scoring at home that's apple 1 adobe 0.

Let's not get too cocky.
The last thing the creative industry needs/wants is Adobe to cease CS support for Macs. That would be game over for traditional Mac computers (desk/laptops)... or maybe an opportunity for tools like Parallels to patrner with Apple to offer an even more robust multiple-OS experience... or maybe an opportunity for Apple to acquire Parallels and bundle such functionality natively within the OS.

Video standard for the present

I apologize that this is off topic, but it is a related topic and I can't find the answer anywhere else.

Given that Flash is a standard of the past, and html 5 is a standard of the future, what video format is the standard of the present?

For example, I don't think that the Apple website uses either Flash for video or html 5 for video. So what do they use? What should we all use until html 5 becomes commonplace and Flash becomes obsolete?

Yes. Kind of ironic that it doesn't work in Safari (for some). No problem with Webkit though.
