You sure spend a good deal of time around here passing judgement on others and belittling those with differing opinions. Might be time to consider growing up.

In terms of he refresh behavior, my iPhone 4 on 4.2.1 behaves in almost the exact same way as the iPad 1 in the video. Refreshes needed quite a bit and checkerboards on fast scrolling. Of course, it has 512mb of memory. It'll be interesting to see how much that changes once I drop 4.3 onto it (waiting for unteathered jailbreak to be ready for prime time). I agree that 4.3 may be the big difference and this test is basically invalid.

Hahahaha, rolling your eyes at someone who wantonly wastes money is called "belittling"? If so, then I'm fine with that. There's a big difference between reasonable people and people with no control over their gadget spending, and there's nothing wrong with pointing that out..especially when someone flaunts this behavior as if it were appropriate.

And, since you haven't used 4.3, and I've been using it on iPhone 4 and iPad 1, I again repeat, 4.3 is the key. Best midterm Apple software update, ever.

Not concerned about the reloading tabs as I use atomic and I haven't seen that happen but no checkerboard effect is a great improvement :D
Though Safari makes you reload, Atomic outright crashes when I have too many graphics-heavy pages loaded on my iPad1 (runs out of memory). It doesn't have this problem on the iPhone4, so I suspect it won't be a problem on the iPad2 either.

You mean like this?: http://i52.tinypic.com/oh1pqp.png

Again, it's nice having a large disposable income.

Finally syncing my iPad 2. :)

People seem to forget that the original iPad only sold 15 million units. The iPad 2 is NOT competing with the iPad 1 but every other tablet that will be released in 2011. While the reason to go from iPad 1 -> iPad 2 may not be that compelling, for a LARGE percentage of people, this will be the first iPad they own.

Why can't they use a virtual RAM from the fast SSD? Seems like the speed would improve, and we would have greater memory for multitasking and web pages:confused:

...

I don't even care about safari normally but I wish that icab would use the nitro engine because icab is far slower than safari now. Around 3300 points slower on sunspider

Compared to my brother's older 32 GB iPad, my new iPad loads web pages--even very complex ones like SFGate.com (the web page of the San Francisco Chronicle) and ESPN.com's iPad-specific page--way faster even through my 802.11g Wi-Fi connection.

The combination of the faster A5 chip, 512 MB system RAM and much improved Safari browser that comes with the iPad makes a huge difference, to say the least. :)

That comparison looks to be completely unfair. He's clearly using a jailbroken iPad 1 (note the menubar) so it's not going to be running iOS 4.3 either. Comparing a jailbroken iPad 1 on iOS 4.2 with the older slower Safari (and since it's jailbroken there's no knowing how much other stuff he has going on) to a 'virgin' iPad 2 with iOS 4.3 is simply not a fair comparison. I have no doubt that the newer iPad is considerably better but this is just not a fair comparison and, in my opinion, shouldn't be on the front page.

512 MB of RAM is still pretty chintzy. Come on Apple, spend the extra few bucks wholesale to give us a product that won't be outdated in 6 months!

They need things to upgrade in iPad 3. Always wait for the 3rd revision of an Apple product before you get what should have been there in the first place.

4.2.1 on iPad 1, 4.3 on iPad 2

I am a little worried about this.

You can see the Backgrounder icon on the top right of the iPad (1), and this could mean that some memory is being consumed by whatever applications are backgrounded.

Am I right to be thinking about that, or do I have it wrong how Backgrounder works?

iPad 2

I got my iPad 2 3G last night and comparing it with my old iPad is just what they say speed wise. It's very cool, it feels better and you can feel the weight difference, 3 ounce's makes a bigger difference then I thought it would.
It feels very nice in my hands, holding with one hand feels perfect, that's when I really feel the weight diff.
FaceTime works great and yes you can notice the cameras are low res but just fine for what they are primarily used for. I won't be taking snapshots or video much with my iPad, I use my i4 for most of the stuff and I can't imagine using for your primary camera.

Overall it works awesome, to me anytime there is speed increase its worth the upgrade!
I love it just like all my Apple gadgets and I always look forward to new upgrade/update especially the iPhone & iPad!:D:apple::apple::apple:

I would hope so...the iPad 2 is a an improved device...no doubt...

The point for many is that the iPad was not exactly slow

Nothing wrong with owning either one...just funny to me how some people here need to feed their egos about upgrading.

safari on my mac pro is definitely snappier after reading through this discussion
:D

"the placebo effect should never be underestimated"

The screen looks slightly brighter and clearer on the new Ipad. Is that because the original Ipad is older or because of the new "glare resistant" screen?

i'm tired of reading all those iTards comments. i know this is an apple site, but come on people, the ipad2 is that what an ipad1 should have been. the technology was available and affortable, but apple didn't implement it. i'm wondering why? ($$$)
don't get at me with user experience and such things. as a power user i want to have access to the file file system of the device and that's something apple doesn't do!
i know, apple defined the hole category of tablets, but i'm happy to see that there are competitors (aka xoom and much more to come) which force apple to be even more competitive bringing better products to their costumers.

Maybe Apple is not a non-profit organization and they want to make profit? Like any business would do.

Do you think that would be the reason?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2 like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C134 Safari/6533.18.5)

So, I picked up the ipad2 last night. I never had the first iPad. I have to say, I'm a little underwhelmed. I'm really, really not trying to troll. It's a fun device. I know it's not supposed to be a computer replacement, but there are some people on here asking all the time if they can now sell their MB or MBP. My message to them is "not on your life". This is not a product to do any serious kind of work. And by that, I mean common "work" such as PowerPoint/keynote presentations or complicated Excel sheets. And I'm not even going to comment on computer intensive projects like video or photo editing.

I base my comment about being "underwhelmed" because I'm encountering websites that have video embedded in them and the iPad cannot play them well. I certain don't mean Flash video, but html5 video. The videos stutter and have to be paused every 3 minutes so it can buffer. If this is the ultimate "magical" consumption device that it's supposed to be, it should be able to play videos off the net. 2nd, is the resolution. Let me premise my comment by saying I have the iPhone 4. Perhaps I'm spoiled, but when I look at text on the ipad2, it looks fairly pixelated. Maybe I've been spoiled by my Retina Display. Maybe I'm "holding it wrong" and should hold it farther from my face.

Now before all you cry out troll or "go take it back then", I'm not saying it's a trashy device. It's great for playing around with around the house and just plain surfing the net. And I'm sure there's nothing better out there also. I'm just saying I'm a but underwhelmed and I believe Apple could have done a little better. I wanted to believe the hype, but reality tells me otherwise.

Why can't people just spend their money the way they want to and buy an upgraded device every year if they so desire?? And how does an "almost $4000" meal help the millions starving every year? If that money wasn't spent they would still be starving anyway.

It's their money, they worked to earn it. Let them spend it how they wish. That's the beauty of it....there is the opportunity for everybody to make money.

To me this is by itself a reason to upgrade from the iPad1 to iPad2.

Me too. Apparently I spend my time on complex sites because even hitting back would cause the whole page to reload.

This was my number 1 complaint about the first iPad and I'm so psyched it's much improved.
