I just this morning upgraded the iOS on my two original iPads to 4.3.

Both are now noticeable faster surfing on my home network then with the 3.2 OS I had on them.

When I use my 3G model on the AT&T network the speed has improved somewhat but not as dramatically.

If this test is done with different firmware it is certainly useless.

First off, I have an ipad with 4.2.1 and one with 4.3. While surfing, I see no speed increases.

Constantly, my 4.3 iPad 1st gen reloads pages. That alone validates the test.

I'm sure the lack of was done on purpose. Look, these tablets are not even upgradable except if you look at a possible SD card slots. But other than that, nada. So if you want to keep selling them things iteration after iteration you have to go slow.

What on earth are you smoking? You don't seen to know the difference between sd card & actual ram memory! Sd card are only for storage.

Well... While Safari is vastly improved and I dont see page reloads as often, it still happens. If you load up all the tabs and then do a bit of surfing on one of them, especially if the pages you visit are image heavy, and them go back to the other tabs, you will get the same reloading effect. Also, I don't where the reviewer got the idea that you no longer get the "checkerboard" effect. If you bring up a new page that hasn't downloaded completely yet and quicky try to scroll to the bottom, you will see the same checkerboard effect.

You're underwhelmed because you can't edit complex Excel spreadsheets and do intensive video editing? Give me a break. Also, the video stuttering issues you experienced had nothing to do with the iPad but your own wifi network or the websites themselves.

By the way, sorry but, go troll elsewhere.

You need to develop better reading comprehension. Go read it again, carefully this time because you seem to have some screws loose, fanboy.

But since that is unlikely to happen, I'll put it in kindergarten language for you. I was referring to the people who think they can ditch the iMac or laptop and use the iPad as their sole computer. You simply cannot do this because you cannot do any complex spreadsheets on it (and that was just one example).

Now, the reason I'm underwhelmed is because the iPad can't seem to play a simple video on the web (due to stuttering) and text appears pixelated. It's certainly not my wireless, I'm at work.

Now go back to stacking your blocks.

The competition is not able to match Apple on price and trying to beat Apple on specs by adding better camera/more ram, etc. It's a fair price, especially since it looks like the product will get better and better and stay the same price.

Yes, you can buy the Xoom, pay more, get a little better specs but, your overall experience is no where as good. Factor in 65000 native tablet apps vs 100 native Android and you're paying more for a substandard experience.

"Reading comprehension" is how much you retain after reading something. It is not the same as avoiding typos and using correct grammar. Think twice before you insult someones intelligence

@ the guy saying apple could have implemented all this on the first iPad.... LOL

my first point would be that the A5 chip, or indeed any other dual core chip did not exist at the time.

And your ignorant view that it could be cheap to do all this in the first gen is ridiculous, no other tablet had that capability until 2011

You call yourself a pro user... Clearly an iPad is not aimed at you...

it is well known that apple charges a bit more for their products. you can say what you want, but facts are facts.
no other dual core chip you say? then what are the intel core 2 duo in the macbook pros? aren't they dual core?
i'm sure you meant low consumption dual core cpu's, well then yes you're right. but cameras and usb2 ports existed and weren't expensive either ;)

but i agree with you on your last point. i want to be able to customize MY tablet the way I want, and not the way apple does ;) so yes, an ipad, or any other idevice isn't for me. and if apple decides some day to lock down the macbook/imacs the way they did with the idevices, then i wouldn't buy one either.

i guess if i ever decide to buy a tablet, i have to choose the competition.
we have to be glad that there is competition now and apple isn't the only player anymore. apple may not care about their market share on desktop pc's, but they do care about their market share on portable devices. if there weren't any competition coming, the ipad2 would be more expensive. you can bet on that ;)

The checkerboard effect with fast scrolling only shows up on more complex pages in the iPad 1 with 4.3.

There is definitely an improvement with the iPad 2 performance in scrolling but the main improvement appears to be ram which should allow you to view even more complex webpages that you could on the iPad 1.

This is excellent news. I'm already using my iPhone 4 to browse the web more often than my Mac. It's quite comfortable, actually. I can only imagine how much better it will be on the iPad 2.

I'll likely transition tasks like e-mail and browsing to the iPad. Gaming might as well follow. Word processing and presentations, ditto. File viewing and editing (and access via VNC), I can add that as well. Photo editing - tough to beat aperture + Pixelmator, but getting close. I'm already paying bills and ordering products with my iPhone. YouTube goodness (shows like, etc.) the iPad will have most of that covered.

Seems like my Mac is on the way to being just a large-volume download machine.

I can do all this on a Mac, obviously. But the portability and interface of an iPad - the entire experience, is so much more enjoyable. I actually miss the iOS touch interface when I use my Mac these days.

For the first time in a while, I'll be skipping an iDevice rev. I can't justify getting an iPad 2 when I already have an iPad 1, and I don't understand - other than for reviewers or pundits who need it by fiat - what the rationale is for getting one if you already own an iPad. Have to wait a fraction of a second for a page to load or checkerboard to disappear? Nope. The extra 3 ounces of weight is breaking your back? Nope. Even if your justification is needing the better Verizon network (at least in some / most areas, my area included), you should already have the iPhone 4, which has Personal Hotspot you can connect your old iPad to. The cameras pale in comparison to the iPhone's cameras, so it's not that either. I guess it's the "shiny new toy" effect. I'm going to pass on this one, but good on the people who ran out to grab one, I hope they enjoy their new cool device! :apple:

95% of purchases from ipad 1 to ipad 2 is based on Want, people wanted a slimmer design, wanted no checker board, wanted a white one, wanted facetime and wanted a camera, the others maybe actually NEEDED it. And if you can afford it that is perfectly fine, let them be. If you like keeping up with the jones, thats fine as long as you can afford it

I'm not sure how you plan to be more productive on a competitors tablet...

the xoom is not user upgradable, and has less apps... so really it is faaar more locked down + no word proccessing suite as of yet, like the iPad has in iWork.

the iPad had the same prices last year, when there were no competition, so your last point is irrelevant too.

as for USB slots, why on earth would you want them???

cameras are the only thing that Apple maybe could have implemented, but tbh that doesn't bother too many people, cant think that too many people would be taking pictures on it, but I digress...

also cheers for making me laugh, mentioning C2D chips on an iPad LMFAO.

What I don't get is why the lack of RAM forces the iPad 1 to reload pages. Couldn't it simply cache those tabs in flash memory? That may not be as fast as loading from RAM, but the difference would be milliseconds at worst. Can anyone explain that to me?

Hmmm, considering a vast portion of those apps are crap, or simple little games that you play for 2 days then get bored of, I would actually call it the 'crap' store.

You should just relax a bit. I too have a Macbook Air and of course I like it more as a computer when I compare it to an iPad, but this is not the point. iPad is a much more mobile device than the MBA.
The iPad has surely its place in my life, and it is an excellent entertainment and general consumption device. The MBA is a great mobile computer that accomplishes most common computing tasks really very good.

The Appstore has some great apps and it also has apps that replace web sites that don't work well on iOS.

Is it me or does the iPad 1 have a yellowish screen compared to the 2? Probably mentioned earlier in the thread but 7 pages is too much to read for me haha

Your only problem with using YouTube on the iPad is not all the videos come up when you search than if you searched on a computer, also most videos from official companies YouTube accounts like music videos tend not to work on iPhone/iPad.

Annoying for me as I love watching music videos on YouTube on my favourite artists.
