I wonder if it's incorrectly deleting a plist-type file that keeps track of iCloud documents, rather than deleting the documents themselves? If the index of the documents is deleted, it would appear like the documents are deleted. The iCloud sync process may be relying on that index rather than the presence of the actual files. Apple has a habit of abstracting away the file system at the application level, so this would seem like a feasible explanation.

Apple is trying to do too much at once. Apple pay, Apple watch, new iPhone size screens, bunch of new dev stuff added into IOS 8, new iPad, iMac, on the way, etc....they need to slow down and focus on fixing IOS 8 bugs

Christ Apple, get it together already.... this is just misstep after misstep and getting harder and harder to defend the incompetence to the many friends I have who simply hate Apple and <3 Android...

We're not talking about intricate security related bugs here... we're talking about stuff that basic testing and validation should have uncovered before the software was ever given to end users.

Update to a bug fix load of iOS 8 and have a phone with no cellular or fingerprint ID? Reset all settings on the phone and lose all of your documents in the cloud? It's amateur hour at Apple and now they want to trust us all with our payments!

Maybe instead of rewarding employees with the 'job well done' and giving them the entire week of Thanksgiving off, get them to work cleaning up this steaming pile and give us some solid releases before taking holiday breaks.

I would call this a major bug. Definitely not good in the user department or the public relations department.

Not good Apple.

I wonder what kind of major iCloud bugs are still lurking in Yosemite.

Wow, iOS 8 just keeps getting worse and worse

I'd agree with you, but I updated an iPad 3 to iOS 8 last night (my first experience) and found iOS 8 to be a solid upgrade from iOS 7. Some very welcome refinements to the UI and overall feels solid and more mature than iOS 7. Really is a shame these problems are happening... come on Apple, get your act together!

How to fix

This happened to me back on one of the beta's and I was able to get everything back by browsing to the ~/Library/Mobile Documents folder of a Time Machine backup and everything was recoverable.

I did it just by browsing into the Time Machine Directory with Finder, I had no luck doing it with the actual Time Machine GUI.

OMG, ResetGate!!! :O

Right after BendGate, WilliamsGate and CellGate!!!:eek::mad:

Poor Steve Jobs. He would never have allowed this!!!

I'm glad I'm not using iCloud for anything sensitive because, by habit, my stuff is in someone else's cloud, but this isn't reassuring one bit.

Meh. Windows 9 is announced tomorrow :D

Getting bored of hearing about Apple this, Apple that. Pfftt.

And this is why I'm starting to hate Apple for not keeping Downgrade versions of iOS around until the "newest" OS is at least 6 months old.

It looks as if turning off icloud drive on the iPhone also deletes the from the icloud. Glad I have a local backup of most of my icloud docs

I am extremely skeptical about Yosemite. It feels like 10 steps backwards in terms of OS X's user interface and overall refinement. I'm normally very excited about OS X updates, but this one has me cringing with some of their lame changes. It no longer "feels" like a Mac. I expect it will be refined over time, though. Just sad that some people at Apple seem to be clueless, or living on a different planet.

Hmm. Weird. I am currently developing an app that uses iCloud Drive and I explicitly tested this when I handed down my 5S to my wife. The iCloud drive documents created by my app did not get erased off iCloud drive when I did an "erase all" on the 5S before restoring from my wife's old backup.

Wonder if some other conditions need to be present to trigger the bug.

I'm curious, what benefit is there for you? I ask because my iPad 4 sees little to no difference at all other than my battery going down a bit faster, the "big" features are unsupported on my device or just not intended for iPads in general.

This is what happens when you put a bean counter (Tim Cook) in charge of the #1 high tech brand in the world. He only knows what his underlings tell him and has no vision of his own, no higher standard. He is a poor excuse for a leader. Instead of congratulate themselves with high fives at the last keynote, maybe he should try and get the basics right. You know, like video streaming.
