I think this also applies to photographs as I lost most of mine once I did a clean install of iOS 8. Fortunately, I have them stored on an external drive attached to my MBP. But anything I took with my iPhone 5S earlier than a couple weeks ago ... gone.

A lot of people should be updating their CVs at Apple. Maybe they should invest some of those billions in more software engineers and quality managers?

Nah, they rather give the money to U2, so they can look cool and "relevant".

We are back to the Scully era. Missing the boat of what makes apple great.
Apple is now busy trying to be google and building stupid mac pro's, pointlessly bigger iphones, smaller ipads, and unusable buggy software.

Simple stuff that worked, that even your mom could figure out...that was the recipe. Now we have overly complicated and buggy nonsense.

I guess that is what happens when you move the pretty hardware guy over to developing the software too.

This is what happens when you put a bean counter (Tim Cook) in charge of the #1 high tech brand in the world. He only knows what his underlings tell him and has no vision of his own, no higher standard. He is a poor excuse for a leader. Instead of congratulate themselves with high fives at the last keynote, maybe he should try and get the basics right. You know, like video streaming.

I dunno... wouldn't you blame Craig Federighi (senior vice president of Software Engineering)... or Eddy Cue (senior vice president of Internet Software and Services) ?

Yes... Tim Cook is the big boss... but the people with boots on the ground (testing, or rather not testing this software) seem to be the ones responsible for these errors.

I don't see a video.

Let me help you, because this is apparently too complicated for you.

You click the link, then you see an article shared of a bend iPhone. Click on it, viola, there is a video.

Recovery

I'm not using iCloud drive yet but in Mavericks before the new drive you're documents were also stored in /User/Library/Mobile Documents/
If they are also erased there you might be able to find them in a TM backup before using the new drive.

Wow.... Tim must be SO PISSED....

Is this something they can fix on the back-end or does this mean we will be seeing an iOS update very shortly??

show me a single video of a phone bending in front pockets, please. not just a bunch of dumbasses trying to break them on purpose.

Just admit it's an issue - we know there's more than the 9 apple claimed and even if there weren't, these 9 clearly didn't go out of their way to bend their phones.

Apple needs to just buy blackberry and use their backend services/server for iCloud

And how would that fix a client-side (local to phone) bug? This wasn't a cloud problem.... or maybe it was and the problem propagated back to the phone? We don't really know. That said, Apple is employing a diverse range of technologies for their cloud deployment, which is how it should be. Using just one single vendor would not be their best approach.

It looks as if turning off icloud drive on the iPhone also deletes the from the icloud. Glad I have a local backup of most of my icloud docs

I wrote them a bug report about poking the button in the iCloud settings that says "Sign Out" and having the next dialog box being titled "Delete Account". They got back to me and said that was the way they've always done it, so they weren't going to change it. Nice.

Wow...I'm so glad I haven't updated my iPhone to 8 yet. I did my iPad only because I rarely use it. I think I'll turn it off and lock it away until I know I can touch it safely without ***** up the rest of my stuff.

Apple is rushing these builds out and they seem to have a weak testing culture. This and the 8.01 should be a wake up call.

If you are going to be insulting get your own house in order. I did click and saw no video of a phone bending in anyone's pocket. I saw a gif of it already bent.

If there is a video that shows what was claimed to be there - a video of it bending in someone's pocket (e.g. show it straight when it goes in the pocket, have someone move around a bit, then remove it and show it bent) than I apologize. But otherwise this "video" is not at all what the poster asked for.

Samsung ad tomorrow, 'Get free Google drive storage with a Galxy S5, so you can reset your phone without worring'
Apple support page tomorrow 'We are aware of a proble affecting all users on iOS 8, which will wipe iCloud Drive data after a reset of settings. We will be releasing iOS 8.0.3 with a fix shortly.

Probably back-end. I had my documents appear and disappear a couple of times during the beta, although the final time they only returned after the GM went live.

There were people claiming their photos were "gone" after updating to iOS 8 when it turned out they were searching for the old "Camera Roll" album that no longer exists. So you actually had zero photos in the Photos app after updating to iOS 8? I upgraded an iPad last night and it went smoothly (directly to 8.0.2), no photos lost.

Wow, iOS 8 just keeps getting worse and worse

Oh golly "ios 8 is so terriblez7374, look at all these horrendus glitches"

Meanwhile on Android, top 1000 apps on Play Store are completly vulnerable to SSL/ Man in the middle attacks

Or the terrible AOSP browser bug in Android where it affects over 50% of all Android users

Or the fact that a factory reset on Android doesnt do absolutely **** in deleting your data and that that information can be retrieved off your phone, even after you sold it and "think everything is erased"

Wow.... Tim must be SO PISSED....
I wonder if he even knows. How insulated is he? There's little incentive for lower levels to bring these kind of problems to the attention of the CEO.

If he's a smart man, he'll have an independent team of monitors who report only to him with news like this.

I also wonder how scary he is. There seems to be a general consensus that Steve was terrifying when angry, and would sometimes leave a trail of devastation - mass firings etc. I don't suppose we'll ever know, but I'm curious as to how much Tim makes people tremble with fear.
