Funny, too. UPS isn't in the business of holding freight, in three states. I thought these were to be delivered to three different houses. I mean, that in and of it self is so everyday there's nothing unusual there at all.

Could have been the same house three times, once each day.

Curious. I've never been refused a commercial delivery, and I've had up to 8 pallets dropped off at my driveway in any one delivery. All they need to generally know is they need to bring a truck with a lift gate and pallet jack.

Abumac or whatever, isn't a dealer, just a reseller, that sources stuff from wherever, and resells it.

Which means they buy gray market, "extra bits", and such, to help smaller resellers along in getting higher quantity for better deals.

That also means that stuff is paid for up front.

What was that again, you said, that the financial institution could not access the account? :)

An idle mind is a bad thing, and this is the proof.

Yeah, there's just far too much about all this that defies logic. But, I think it's time for me to bow out of trying to convince Squilly that this is a bad deal.

In the words of The Daily Show's John Stewart "Irrationality, I have come to understand, cannot be fought with empirical evidence."

I would suggest the VERY strong probability that not only is he (his brother?) not making money, I would suggest that, at best, it's going to cost them a bundle when the invoice doesn't get paid...and worst, face criminal legal action.

Someone is making money: that's for sure.

Illegal export of software

Getting the deal done. Shipping product. And why would we go to jail? We'd be the ones getting scammed. Feds would be going after the scammers, and we already have the identity of one of them.

I jumped to page 4 from page 2 and saw your question at the top. I registered just to answer this, since no one mentioned it on the first two pages.

The operating systems contain encryption algorithms that are illegal to export outside the US. The keys used that are ok to export are shortened. That means that a long section of a x-many-bit key is standardized, the same in every generated key, leaving only a short portion that the NSA is able to crack. No, i'm not saying this just because of recent events. I learned this long ago.

The devices you are about to export are not for export, period. That is where you can get arrested.

What your brother "should" do if this were legitimate in the first place (and it's not, see export law) is obtain IN HAND all the cash up front so that it can't be yanked back, not sitting in some joint account that THEY say THEY need permission to withdraw from. What he is doing is simply not how real business is done. In reality, what he should do is acquire proper contracts as a test to see if these guys are real. What he should do for now is get out of it.

Does he have real names, addresses, offices, cross-referenced externally (looked up separately from the people involved) to make sure these offices are real? Have they met over skype? Most importatntly, did they sign contracts that were notarized? This story reminds me of something a 22-year-old would get sucked into nowadays. When I was 22, this would be something a 13-year-old would fall for.

Oh my! I'm sorry guys. I thought there were only 4 pages on this thread....not 11! I'm way behind.

Also, I read the beginning of the thread hours ago and thought the devices may include the kind with an OS (Pads, phones, pods, etc)

Please, please let this be made up.

Otherwise, please find me shivering uncontrollably rocking back and forth in my basement muttering how humanity cannot be this stupid.

Squilly, thanks for the laugh. If you do have the courage/stupidity to go ahead with this, good luck, but please don't come running here when it all goes tits up.

According to Apumac's website all bulk orders have to be paid for by a bank wire transfer......so if you assume that Apumac is actually where Squilly's bro is buying the stuff, then it does look like payment is required before the order is shipped........seemingly, anyway.

But if Apumac is actually the vendor, then it makes a bunch of other things look pretty peculiar

I gave this thread a rough count and figure that about 50 people have posted that this is a bad idea against 1 person's insistence that they will likely go through with this.

And take a wild stab in the dark about which way this is going to go!

Actually...don't waste your time, because we all know the answer to that one...

This evening, I have had a good bottle of Italian red wine with a good friend (Montepulciano, if you must know), sipped slowly; this was followed by two, equally slow, wonderful cognacs.....

Much conversation took place on matters of mutual interest: war, peace, literature, politics, poetry, culture, religion........but alas, there was no espresso to be had (I must say that I rather like an espresso with a cognac) as our local staff are not working today.....

And something addictive, unreconstructed, inexplicable, makes me return to this utterly compulsive thread.......

Actually, a confession: this thread, I have read in its entirety; you cannot not read it in its entirety. And yes, worse, I find that I seem to return guiltily, furtively, every few hours, just to check on it; what is happening.....

Actually, this addictive quality must be evident to others; that, along with the fact that this thread is still functioning after 11 pages of thoughtful responses - all saying (yes, Squilly, all are telling you the same, unpalatable answer) - that this is A Very Bad Idea, well, maybe, perhaps, this should suggest something.......

Do you and your brother still live with your parents? Or is he living somewhere else? What do your parents think about all this, or are they even aware of the situation?
We live with our parents, they're skeptical but telling him to go for it and "be careful". But no, they don't know the half of it.
Was a place a lot like your description in So. Cal. they used to have a dozen locations and are down to 6 or so. http://www.prestopasta.com

Did they do well? Or no notice?

You bring up a valid point. The Europeans must know of this or they wouldn't buy them (unless they want to sell them back in the US whilst flipping it. First, no. Second, yes. I don't think there are any contracts involved.

My gullibility might be getting to me but is that true?

How is this not Wastelanded yet?

This is philosophical enquiry at its deepest, most meaningful......in our modern world. Why wasteland it?

We don't ask, where is God? Who is God? Why am I here? What is life? - Instead, we ask - well, is this totally ludicrous, quite insane, utterly mad, spectacularly illogical, and completely crazy not to say cock-eyed implausible plan to make money worth pursuing? (Answer: No).

We all realize, as you so eloquently express, that this a sad and perverse pleasure. Feel no guilt or embarrassment...we are all occupying the same ward in the asylum.

Either they don't know it (and most people probably don't know that about the encryption keys), or they know it and they simply don't care. Obviously whoever is getting involved in this deal is not the world's most upstanding citizen and doesn't mind breaking a law or two.

Great memories. I remember those like it was yesterday.

Regarding the foreign party, of course they don't care. I was mentioning it for the sake of Squilly & Squally. He had asked, roughly, why his bro might get arrested.
