I think that you should check if the current rMBP has enough power for your needs, and if it fits your needs, just buy it, do not wait for something better that you really don't need, if you do so, you could be waiting for ever and get not benefit from it. I own a rMBP 2.7/16/512 since august, and it is the best notebook I've ever had.

I've been a long time user of 1600x1200, then 1920x1200 and lastly 1920x1080 Dell's workstation laptops, but the possibility to run from 1400x900 to 1920x1200 as required, with no apparent loose of quality was what made me switch to the Apple world.

The rMBP has enough power for everything I throw at it. I usually use it for software development (python, php,C) but Diablo III and Starcraft II are also installed :-D No problem at all with image retention or scroll lag or whatever, the only problem I have is with keyboard and trackpad not responding for 3 to 5 seconds after plugin some USB devices, but that the only problem I have, and is not killing my experience :-D.

If you are going to use it for app development I am sure that it will be more than enough for your needs, even if you like to code while traveling and do it for 8 hours a day :-D

Just get it, do not wait for something better around the corner, because you'll never enjoy things that way. That would be different if Apple had already announced the new units for shipping in less than a month, but we do not even have a date or even the specs, so just enjoy what you get now.

Regards!

+1, if you want to have the best of the best will have to change your machine a few times a year, suggest you look for a good used, refurbished, open box, etc rMBP now at a substantial discount price and start enjoing it!!!

Thanks, I really feel the same way I'm just uncertain because if they do release it in June shortly after WWDC, I'd be very mad. The thing that I do not like doing is buying something at the end of its cycle, if the new refresh of retinas are coming out in the next months, its basically like buying a second generation. The biggest concern for me is the loss of battery life and the heat generated, apparently haswell will succeed on those fronts. To me it's not the biggest of deals, but also I have to think about if I buy the latest retina now, it's price will surely be dropped when the haswell one comes out, or if not they'll charge the same price for haswell. To me thats just about buying a second generation for the same price as the newest one, I realize I could get refurbished but I'm not interested in that because I will be financing it. The question of whether or not the macbook retina now will suit my needs is not relevant here, I know it will, that's why I want it, I do not doubt that. The thing that is in question is getting the best bang for my buck and paying full price on a product that will be second generation in a few months worries me.

Not to be a downer, but I think it's a very good chance they'll update their laptop lineup at WWDC. Haswell is out June 3rd, and the OEMs can start to mass produce laptops with these new CPUs now in May. Can probably expect a geekbench leak this coming month.

That's not being a downer this is exactly what I'm hoping for. I do want a mac asap so I can start learning but at the same time I don't wanna buy something top dollar brand new to have it be a second gen like a month later. The sooner they get the new retinas with Haswell or the sooner more information is leaked about it, the better. I hate waiting in the dark unsure of how long I would have to wait for when I could buy one now. So the quicker more info comes out or the quicker apple refreshes the retinas the happier I will be. I just wish I could call apple and ask if they are coming out in June/July, or not till the fall. If they say june, then I have np waiting, however if they say fall, then I have some tough choices to make, even august is probably a bit too late for me.

I'd get a refurb now. Even if the new one comes out in June, it would take months until they are in the refurb store. In addition, Haswell is looking to be a very minor update.

No I wouldn't get a refurb haswell I'd buy it new. So if the new one is likely to be out in June I'd rather just wait and buy it brand new. If it's not gonna be out till mid-late august or the fall, then that changes things and I'd have to think about getting a retina now.

wait and get a new haswell one. the battery life improvements are more than enough worth it. based on my research, battery life will see significant increases

just read this
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2622...l_cpu_better_performance_all_day_battery.html

the laptop will probably be out in june anyways so you wouldnt have to wait too long

yeah im just nervous because reports are saying the MBPs are getting updated first and it could be awhile for the retinas...

hmm that i find really odd...why wait for the rmbp to be updated? they probably need the new processors more than any other line

The word is that there are panel shortages for the retina. But it's really not a reliable source. Nobody outside of Apple knows for sure

I know what you mean but you're getting your euphemisms backwards. The Haswell retinan is a 2nd generation rMBP. The one that is available now is a 1st generation.

yeah my bad all my 2nd generations in my post should be changed to last generations.

Don't Wait

I bought a 13" rMBP about a month ago (replacing a 2012 13" Air that I had never been completely happy with), and I have to say the 13" rMBP is the best damn MacBook I have ever owned. I too wondered if I should wait to see what Apple would do later this year, but having had this machine now for four weeks, I can honestly say I doubt anything Apple does in regards to an update is going to make me regret my purchase.

If you want a new machine, go for it now, otherwise you'll always be waiting for "the next big thing."

If it helps, i'm waiting until the second-gen rMBP is released.

Why?

Well, we're only just over a month away from launch of Haswell, and I believe that we're going to see most of the Mac line be replaced by Haswell and NVIDIA 700 series systems.

I've repeatedly tried the rMBP in an Apple 3rd party shop that's close to where I live, and there's no denying it without sounding all 'fanboy', it really is a perfect machine. Fast, reliable, incredible display, and powerful.

So why not wait for the second gen of this?

And with a month to go as well.

I'm sure if you go with one now, you'll regret it in a month's time.

Wait.

Yeah, lol this describes my EXACT mentality. I don't wanna regret it...

I've only been using the rMBA 15 for a few hours (just got it today), and I am really happy I didn't wait. I didn't have much of a choice either.

Well then, you've answered this long winding thread.

Wait only 4 short weeks.

Then enjoy your new, second gen rMBP. ;)

Well, the convention is in over 5 weeks,in fact it ends in 6 weeks to this day. then if we are lucky the machines will be released 4 weeks later. Probably a little more. Then if you want a BTO add another 1-2 weeks. So really 11 to 12 weeks. And that's if it isn't a limited release due to the USB 3.0 glitch, which is definitely a very real possibility.

yeah I was thinking or hoping for like June 30th...

You're worrying about things that are unlikely to exist, and way over-sensitive to say if it'll be 5,6 or 7 weeks.

If this was 3 or 4 months, i'd say, buy it now!

But I don't mind waiting. The result will be a better machine in the long run, a machine that I'm going to use for a good 4 years.

So whatever the date may be, it won't be a year of waiting, it won't be 6 months of waiting.

Worst case scenario, it'll be August, but I doubt it.

I'm waiting to buy it in July anyway, as that's when all my exams finish and work is a lot less hectic.

So it's a reward in one way. :)

Sure would be nice. As you know, I've been itching for this thing for months. I've got a $2,700 apple gift card. Looking for a 15" base but with maxed out ram and a 512 SSd. That's all I want. Oh yeah, I was at the Apple store yesterday, inappropriately fondling the current 15", and I saw the external CD. I was just going to get one of those $30 tray popping things online, but the overpriced Apple one ($79) is built to match our metal laptops, and it isn't one of those crappy drawer pop out things. Gonna have to add that to my list
